Chapter 145. Improvisation Requires a Foundation of Competence, Which You Lack
The morning training session began with the kind of deceptive calm that precedes a storm. The training grounds were bathed in the harsh, unforgiving light of the midday sun, the air thick with the metallic tang of sweat and the faint, ionized smell of residual magic.
William stood at the center of the sparring ring, his breathing steady, his stance deceptively relaxed. His eyes, however, were sharp, scanning the four figures circling him like predators assessing prey.
Across the ring stood his core students: Lia, Kaela, Ellie, and Clara. On the sidelines, Olivia paced like a caged panther, her sharp eyes darting between the combatants.
"Don’t just watch him move, read his intent!" she barked, her voice cutting through the wind. "Numbers mean nothing if you don’t synchronize the timing!"
"You’re four against one; make him feel like he’s fighting an army, not four students!"
This was supposed to be a lesson in overwhelming force, a controlled exercise designed to teach them how to leverage the simple mathematical advantage of outnumbering a superior opponent.
William wanted them to understand that even a high-rank instructor could be dismantled if four coordinated threats struck simultaneously from different angles, forcing him to split his attention until his defenses inevitably cracked.
Ellie and Clara took their opening with the terrifying precision of seasoned soldiers. They moved in a deadly, practiced harmony that reminded William painfully of their stand against Corwin’s swarm.
Clara was the conductor, her eyes narrowed in intense calculation as she tracked William’s every micro-movement, her voice cool and clinical as she called out timing.
"Ellie, three seconds. Target his center mass pivot... Now!" Clara commanded.
Ellie didn’t hesitate. "Acknowledged."
With a sharp exhale, she unleashed a controlled, blinding burst of concentrated light.
The spell wasn’t meant to kill, but the sheer pressure of it forced William to twist violently, his boots skidding across the packed earth. He felt the heat sear his cheek as the light grazed him, the afterimage burning in his retinas.
’Damn it,’ William thought, his muscles tensing as he fought to maintain his balance. ’They’re not playing around...’
’Clara is reading my footwork like it’s an open book, and Ellie is using that light to blind my peripheral vision.’
’If I commit to a block, I’m open to a follow-up...’
’If I dodge, I’m exposed to the next angle...’
"Left flank, three degrees down!" Clara shouted, her fingers already weaving the next spell.
The burst landed exactly where predicted. William was forced to snap into a wind stance, summoning a gust of pressurized air to cushion the impact and propel himself backward.
The force of the magical collision rattled his bones, a dull ache spreading through his ribs as he fought to reset his stance before the next coordinated assault could crush him.
But then, the precision shattered.
As Ellie and Clara pulled back to regroup, Kaela and Lia moved in to press the advantage, and the entire tactical formation dissolved into absolute chaos.
"Go left, I’ll cover your flank! On three!" Kaela screamed, her voice cracking with aggressive excitement.
Before Lia could even draw a breath to respond, Kaela launched herself forward like a human projectile, her Ember magic flaring in uncontrolled orange sparks.
"What are you doing?! Wait! That wasn’t the plan!" Lia snapped, her face flushing crimson with frustration.
She had been mid-calculation, preparing to use a water-based redirection spell to funnel William directly into Kaela’s path. Instead, she found herself staring at Kaela’s retreating back. "I was supposed to redirect him toward you, you idiot!"
"Now there’s no target to redirect him into because you’re standing exactly where the opening was supposed to be!"
"Then make a new opening on the fly!" Kaela yelled over her shoulder, already swinging a fist wreathed in flame that missed William by a good three feet. "Stop overthinking it and just hit him!"
"That’s not how tactics work, Kaela!" Lia roared, abandoning her disciplined stance to chase after her. "You can’t just improvise an entire plan collapsing mid-execution and expect the physics of combat to bend to your stupidity!"
"Maybe if you weren’t so slow... I wouldn’t have to improvise!"
"Improvisation requires a foundation of competence, which you clearly lack today!"
William watched them with a growing sense of weary amusement and exasperation. He sidestepped a wild, desperate swing from Kaela that would have left her off-balance for seconds, then pivoted smoothly to avoid a half-hearted magical bolt from Lia that lacked any real conviction.
They were tripping over each other’s feet, their shouts echoing off the training hall walls, their coordination completely severed.
’They have the power,’ William thought grimly as he watched them stumble, ’but they don’t have the discipline...’
’Power without synchronization is just noise. And in a real fight, noise gets you killed.’
"Enough!" William called out, raising a hand.
The command was sharp, carrying the authority of his new rank.
The two girls froze mid-argument, Kaela with one fist raised in a half-formed attack and Lia with her mouth open to deliver another scathing retort. The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by their ragged breathing and the distant sounds of other students training.
William let out a long, patient exhale, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "If you two spent half as much energy communicating as you do arguing, you might actually stand a chance of touching my robes."
William didn’t just lower his hand; he lowered his entire guard, and that was his first mistake or, perhaps, his most calculated lesson.
"You want to improvise?" William’s voice dropped an octave, vibrating with a sudden, dangerous stillness that made the hair on the back of Kaela’s neck stand up. "Then improvise against this!"
Without warning, the air around him didn’t just move; it screamed.
"Wind Stance: Razor Gale!"
WHOOOOOSH SHING!
A circular shockwave of pressurized air exploded outward from William’s center. It wasn’t a blunt force; it was a blade.
The gust tore across the dirt, sending up a spray of grit that stung like buckshot. Kaela, caught mid-taunt, had to throw her arms up to shield her face.
"Shit—!" Her flames flickered and died as the wind pressure literally smothered her embers.
"Don’t freeze up!" William roared, already moving. He was no longer a stationary target; he was a blur of motion.
He lunged toward Kaela first. His movement was explosive, each footfall cracking the packed earth beneath him.
Thump, thump, thump.
He closed the distance in two strides. Kaela instinctively conjured a shield of flame, but William didn’t strike the shield; he struck the ground beside it.
CRACK BOOM!
A concentrated burst of wind magic slammed into the earth, sending a shockwave through the soil that buckled Kaela’s footing. As she stumbled, William’s palm shot forward in a precise strike toward her sternum.
"Too slow, Kaela!"
WHAM!
The impact wasn’t bone- breaking; he controlled his strength, but it was enough to send her skidding backward across the dirt.
"Ugh—!" she wheezed, coughing as the wind knocked the breath from her lungs.
"Lia, Ellie, Clara! Now or never!" William commanded, pivoting on his heel to face the remaining three.
The trio snapped into action, their previous hesitation burned away by the sudden intensity of his assault. Clara’s eyes flashed with cold calculation.
"Formation Delta! Ellie, suppressive fire! Lia, flank left with Water Veil!"
FWOOSH ZAP!
Ellie unleashed three consecutive bolts of searing light. They weren’t just flashes now; they were concentrated spears of energy.
William danced between them, his body twisting in ways that seemed almost inhuman.
Zip-whoosh-snap.
Each bolt passed inches from his skin, the heat singeing the hairs on his arms.
’I can’t dodge forever,’ William thought grimly. ’The light is blinding my vision, and Clara is timing the intervals perfectly...’
’I need to break their rhythm.’
"Now!" Clara shouted.
Lia slid across the ground on a thin sheet of ice she had conjured, her water magic spiraling around her like a protective serpent. She moved with deadly grace, aiming to encircle William’s ankles.
At the same moment, Ellie’s light bolts converged from the front, creating a pincer movement of blinding energy and freezing water.
William gritted his teeth. ’Time to stop playing nice.’
"Wind Stance: Vortex Core!"
The air around William began to spin violently.
VROOOOOM!
The sound was like a miniature hurricane trapped in a confined space. When Lia’s water serpent reached him, it didn’t splash against him; it was caught in the centrifugal force of his wind magic and shredded into harmless mist.
Sssssssshhhhhh!
The mist created a temporary whiteout, but William didn’t need sight; he could feel the displacement of air. He sensed Lia’s position through the water droplets.
He lunged through the fog, his boot connecting with the ice sheet Lia was riding.
CRUNCH!
The ice shattered under the force of his enchanted strike. Lia gasped as she was thrown off balance, tumbling across the training ground.
"Clara, behind you!" Ellie screamed.
Clara had been preparing a high-level binding spell, but William had already anticipated the threat. He used the momentum from his lunge to spin, his elbow connecting sharply with the air to send a blade of wind slicing toward Clara’s feet.
SHHHH TICK!
The wind blade cut through the dirt inches from Clara’s boots, forcing her to abort her spell and leap backward.
"Damn it all to hell!" Kaela yelled, recovering from her stumble and launching herself back into the fray.
This time, she didn’t just swing wildly. "Ember Dragon’s Breath!"
