Clearly, Darla’s reaction was much like it was during those days.

Darla was extremely irritable, and her tone naturally lacked her usual composure.

“Dr. Diaz, can you just get lost?!”

The male doctor was at a loss. “Dr. Gordon, I’m just concerned about you. What’s wrong? You don’t look well.”

Darla gave a cold laugh, showing him no mercy. “Whether I look happy or not has nothing to do with you. And don’t think just because I agreed to go see a movie with you that there’s anything going on between us! I don’t like stuffy, boring guys like you, I don’t like you now, and I never will!”

“You should know your place. Do you really think someone like you is good enough for me?”

The male doctor turned pale, stripped of every shred of dignity.

His lips trembled. “If you say you’ll never like me, then why did you accept the flowers and gifts I gave you?”

By accepting his gifts, wasn’t she just giving him hope, giving him a chance to pursue her?

Darla smiled coldly. “You’re not the only man who’s ever sent me flowers and gifts. Besides, you chose to give them to me, I didn’t force you. You’re the one who wanted to be a sycophant, fawning over me. Who’s to blame?”

“Oh, and by the way, what I hate most are people like you, suck-ups who don’t know their place and have delusions of grandeur. Keep dreaming!”

Hearing this, the male doctor’s heart shattered into a thousand pieces.

Unable to bear the blow, he broke down and left.

Seeing the male doctor in such a heartbroken state, the tangled emotions of anger, jealousy, and resentment swirling within Darla were instantly soothed.

She finally understood the feeling of deriving joy from another’s suffering.

Darla seemed to have calmed down considerably. She pulled out her phone and

made a call.

“Look up a woman for me! I want every detail about her...leave no stone unturned!”

After Darla left, the young couple could finally relax and watch the movie together.

They had expected a comedy, but to their surprise, the film had a bittersweet and somber tone.

The film told the story of a female protagonist who lives in an extremely impoverished family.

Her father was a gambler, and her mother made a living by running a street stall selling various snacks.

Because her father was a compulsive gambler who refused to change his ways, he would often steal the family’s money and gamble it all away.

Her mother’s street stall doesn’t bring in much money. So the protagonist is exceptionally mature; in addition to studying hard, she often takes on part-time jobs to supplement the household income

and ease the burden on her family.

But even so, life has not been kind to her. Her gambler father, having lost all their money, would often beat or berate her.

Many times, she was left covered in bruises. At school, she was mocked and bullied by her classmates.

At her part-time job, she was often harassed and teased by customers.

If it weren’t for the male lead coming to her rescue time and again, the female lead would never have been able to escape these hardships.

Alana hadn’t even watched half the movie when, for some reason, everything before her eyes began to blur.

Many scenes in the movie began to overlap with her own past experiences.

She felt heavy-hearted and oppressed.

The ending was even more painful to watch, because although the male and female leads loved each other, they couldn’t be together.

The female lead’s father was jailed, and her mother fell gravely ill.

Meanwhile, the male lead came from a wealthy family, and his parents refused to allow him to continue seeing her.

What parents would accept a daughter-in-law whose father was in prison?

And so, the two were forcibly torn apart.

The male lead went abroad to study.

The female lead took on part-time jobs to pay for her mother’s medical treatment.

It was an open-ended ending; no one could tell if the two would ever meet again.

But even if they do meet again, so what?

The male lead’s parents would still never approve of them being together.

So, even if they do meet, they were destined never to be together.

Alana felt a stinging sensation in her eyes, and an indescribable sense of loss welled up in her heart, lingering for a long time.

When the movie ended, the lights came on, and everyone filed out.

Only then did she say in a hoarse voice,

“Let’s go.”

Stephan noticed the redness around Alana’s eyes and found it somewhat amusing.

He gently wiped the moisture from the corners of her eyes with his fingertip. “It’s just a movie. Why did you get so caught up in it?”

Alana looked quite sad. “I just feel so sorry for the female lead.”

“Her life has been so hard already, and she worked so hard to improve herself and

become outstanding. Why, in the end, does she not deserve happiness? She clearly mustered the courage to pursue her love for the male lead, and the two of them were finally happy together. Why won’t the male lead’s parents accept her?”

Stephan couldn’t help but cup her face in his hands. Seeing her tear-filled eyes, he couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy.

“Silly girl, it’s just a movie...it’s not real.

Don’t be sad. Besides, isn’t the ending open-ended? The heroine is already getting better little by little. She’ll keep getting better and better, and she’ll become an even more outstanding person.”

Alana’s eyes were red-rimmed as she gazed softly at the handsome, tender man before her, her heart still aching with a bittersweet sorrow.

“But she and the male lead will never be able to be together. The heroine might marry someone else, and the hero will marry another woman too. Don’t you feel sorry for them?”

“It is a pity, but that’s their life, not ours.”

Alana bit her lip. “Suppose...and I mean suppose...that in the future, we might end up just like the male and female leads in the movie...”

Before she could finish, his fingertip pressed against her lips, silencing her. His voice was low, yet firm and resolute.

“There are no ‘ifs.’ We’re not like them. We’ll be together, we’ll get married, we’ll have children, and we’ll live happily together for the rest of our lives!”

Alana looked into the man’s determined eyes and couldn’t help but be moved.

Unable to hold back, she leaned in and kissed his full lips.

No one can predict what the future holds.

But she knew that right now, he had her in his heart, and she had him in hers. As long as they loved each other, that was enough.

Love was not only sweet; it also brought uncertainty and bittersweet moments about the future.

No matter how it ends, cherishing the present and the person right in front of them is what they should do.

Leaving the movie theater.

To help Alana cheer up, Stephan decided to take her to the mall to shop.

Alana feigned modesty. “I don’t really need to buy anything.”

Stephan raised an eyebrow. “But I have plenty of things I want to buy for you.”

Alana was curious. “What is it?”

“Come with me!”

Alana let Stephan take her hand, and they walked into the mall together.

Both of them were exceptionally good-looking, so arriving at the crowded mall naturally drew the attention of many passersby.

“Are they a couple? They look so good together!”

“Of course they are. Would regular friends hold hands like that?”

“That guy is so handsome! His features are sharp, and he has such a great physique, broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and long legs. He’s the classic type who looks slim in clothes but has muscle underneath! I wonder if he has six-pack abs or eight-pack abs under there? I really want to see!”

“The girl is pretty too...she’s got a great figure, slim and slender, but she looks like she’s got some meat on her bones. Plus, she’s got that S-curve...a perfect body!”

“Waaah, I really want a boyfriend this handsome!”

“I want a girlfriend that pretty, too!”

Hearing all the compliments from the people around her, Alana looked quite shy.

She had never before walked around a mall so openly with a man, flaunting their affection like this.

She couldn’t help but glance at the man walking side by side with her.

She had to admit, Stephan was too handsome, no wonder so many girls were staring at him, completely smitten.

She felt a strange sense of pride and satisfaction, knowing that such a handsome and charming man belonged to her.

A female sales clerk at a jewelry store enthusiastically called out to customers.

“Ma’am, sir, are you looking to buy a diamond engagement ring? Please come on in and take a look at our jewelry store!”

Alana blushed and tried to deny it. “Um, we haven’t...”

Stephan’s eyebrows twitched, and he cut her off. “Come on, let’s go inside and take a look.”
