Chapter 164 - 130: A Wave in the Long Dark Night
"Hey, what do you guys think..." Chen Hao began forlornly. "If I ever go to the Capital City to meet Juanzi in person, and I prepare a surprise for her, do you think she’d be so moved she’d throw her arms around me and we’d both burst into tears?"
Xu Juan: ?
Li Zijian and Wang Bo couldn’t be bothered to deal with him.
The two of them began talking at once.
Li Zijian: "I’m still waiting for our sister-in-law to introduce me to Xiaotian."
Wang Bo: "And I’m still waiting for our sister-in-law to introduce me to Yan Tong."
Chen Hao: "You two... I... SIGH..."
After a good while, Jiang He’s emotions finally calmed down.
He slowly raised his head, reluctantly letting go. Seeing Shen Yu’s equally red eyes, he couldn’t help but reach out and gently wipe her tears away.
"Sorry, I lost control."
Shen Yu sniffled and broke into a smile. "You didn’t do anything wrong. Why are you apologizing?"
After speaking, Shen Yu let out a little "uh" and whispered a reminder, "Your hand..."
Jiang He froze, only then realizing he still had his arm around her waist. He quickly let go. "Sorry, sorry. I didn’t mean to."
Shen Yu nodded repeatedly. "It’s fine, it’s fine. You’re forgiven."
The two of them sat up properly, each taking a moment to compose themselves.
Jiang He took a sip of water and couldn’t help but ask, "Teacher Shen, how on earth did you get here? Don’t you have classes?"
Shen Yu blinked, a hint of pride in her voice. "I asked my student counselor for leave, went back to my hometown to make this Jingtai Lan, and once it was done, I took a train straight to Yangcheng. I actually arrived a while ago, and I’ve been here setting things up with Chen Hao and the others."
Jiang He’s heart was touched all over again.
’My girl is just the best, traveling halfway across China just to celebrate my birthday.’
’So adorable. I love her so much...’
Jiang He collected himself, then asked, "So where are you staying tonight? Did you book a hotel?"
Shen Yu nodded. "I booked a room at the budget hotel next door."
Suddenly, Chen Hao turned his head, nudged Li Zijian beside him with an elbow, and said,
"Hey, Zijian, Old Jiang’s bed in the dorm—the maintenance guys haven’t come to fix it yet, right?"
Li Zijian was stunned for a second, but after catching Chen Hao’s frantically hinting gaze, his brain instantly kicked into gear.
"Oh, oh! Right!" Li Zijian immediately went into full actor mode, slapping his thigh dramatically. "The wooden slat is broken, it’s impossible to sleep on. I guess he still can’t go back to the dorm to sleep tonight."
Jiang He: ?
’When did my bed break? How come I don’t know about this?’
Before Jiang He could expose them, Wang Bo chimed in from the side with a perfectly timed finishing blow.
"Oh, sister-in-law, it’s like this. Old Jiang’s bed frame, it suddenly broke a few days ago. The school’s maintenance is so inefficient they still haven’t come to replace it. So for the past while, he hasn’t been able to stay in the dorm and has had to crash somewhere else. Hey, Old Jiang, where are you planning to stay tonight? You must have been so busy with the competition these last two days you haven’t had time to book a hotel, right? How about your brother here runs out right now and books a room for you?"
The three of them were perfectly in sync.
They were truly top-tier wingmen.
Shen Yu was smart enough to see what the three of them were up to at a glance.
But she had no intention of exposing them. Instead, she went along with it, looking at Jiang He with feigned concern. "Why didn’t you say your bed was broken? So you really can’t go back tonight?"
Jiang He looked at the comical sight of his three roommates desperately winking and making faces, and he didn’t know whether to be angry or amused.
He said with a sigh of resignation,
"Alright, alright, fine. I get it. I won’t go back to the dorm tonight. I’ll handle the bed situation myself, you don’t need to worry about it."
Seeing Jiang He’s capitulation, the three single dogs secretly gave a thumbs-up under the table, their mission accomplished as they gracefully retreated.
"Come on, come on, we’ve been so caught up in the touching moments, we haven’t taken any pictures yet!"
Top Photographer Hao grabbed the digital camera beside him and started organizing loudly, "Sister-in-law, quickly help Old Jiang put on the necklace. I’ll take a photo of you two as a memento!"
Shen Yu immediately nodded, stood up, and picked up the Jingtai Lan necklace.
Jiang He obliged and lowered his head slightly.
Shen Yu’s hands went around his neck, the cool silver chain sliding against his warm skin.
With a soft CLICK, the clasp was fastened.
The blue, wave-shaped pendant rested perfectly just below Jiang He’s collarbone. It suited him perfectly.
Chen Hao said they should first take a photo of the "happy couple."
So Jiang He picked up the postcard album and sat next to Shen Yu. Both of them subconsciously neatened their clothes.
Seeing the two looking a little awkward, Chen Hao directed them with dissatisfaction, "You two, get closer! You were hugging so naturally just now, and now you’re acting all stiff?"
Shen Yu and Jiang He shared an embarrassed look and scratched their heads, then moved a little closer to each other in silent agreement.
She looked at the camera, a little nervous, so she once again made two finger guns and pointed them at Jiang He’s cheeks.
Jiang He turned his head to the side to look at her, his eyes filled with a profound gentleness.
Chen Hao said, "One, two, three, say cheese!"
The flash went off, freezing this beautiful moment in time forever.
This was the second photo they had ever taken together in their lives.
After the dinner ended, the three single dogs, ever so considerate, made the excuse that they had to go back and guard the dorm against thieves, and vanished in a flash.
At the entrance of the bistro, only Jiang He and Shen Yu were left.
Jiang He reached out and took Shen Yu’s bag from her.
Then, neither of them took the first step, just standing there on the steps.
The air grew quiet.
Shen Yu lowered her head, her gaze fixed on the tips of her shoes.
Jiang He had one hand in his pocket, pretending to be casual.
"Um..."
"You..."
The two of them spoke at almost the same time.
Their voices overlapped, and they both stopped, looking up at each other.
Their gazes met in mid-air for a moment, then, with perfect unspoken agreement, darted away.
"You go first," Jiang He said, clearing his throat and touching his nose.
Shen Yu bit her lip and lowered her head again. "Your... your bed is broken, isn’t it? Where are you staying tonight?"
Jiang He feigned a relaxed air. "I’ll just find a hotel to stay at."
Shen Yu: "Oh, I see... But, when I was booking my hotel, I heard that because of the big competition, the rooms are pretty full. It might be hard to find a room."
Jiang He: "Oh, right, right, is that so... Well... that hotel you’re at, or any other hotels nearby, are there any other vacant rooms?"
Shen Yu shook her head. "I don’t know. There might not be any."
At this, the air grew even quieter than before.
Teacher Shen’s hint was extremely obvious, and Jiang He, of course, understood it.
He forcibly suppressed a tantalizing thought that flashed through his mind and said, "Let’s go."
Shen Yu was taken aback for a moment. "Where to?"
"I’m planning to get a room at a nicer hotel. Perfect, you can come too. I can’t let you stay in a budget hotel alone late at night, I wouldn’t feel right about it."
After saying that, Jiang He quickly added, "Don’t worry, I’ll get a room with two beds. We’ll sleep separately."
"Oh, okay."
Shen Yu pretended to be relaxed. "Alright then. Thank you, Dr. Jiang. In that case, could you walk me back to get my things first..."
"Oh, sure, okay."
And so, the two of them headed for the hotel, each lost in their own thoughts.
Jiang He had money in his pocket, so of course he planned to book a room at the best hotel in the area.
The whole way there, Teacher Shen was a nervous wreck inside.
Although it wasn’t their first time going to a hotel together, the last time she had been carried there while unconscious, completely unaware of anything.
This time was different. This time, she was the one actively and eagerly following him to the hotel.
’Is something going to happen tonight?’
The mere thought of it made Shen Yu’s heart race.
