I Am Not A Goblin Slayer

Chapter 960 - 469: Shedding the Mortal Body

Perhaps because the terrain was too open, Gauss felt the wind today was even more boisterous than usual, carrying a faint, foul stench of blood and decay.

In the distance, the first wave of the monster tide had already reached within ten miles of the city wall. This was already within the attack range of the Magic Cannons. If it were the first day of the war, one would now see massive orbs of light fired by the Magic Cannons detonating across the plains, devouring hundreds of lives. But now, there were only vigilant eyes on the walls, waiting in strict formation. Even though a few Magic Cannons were still operational, the human higher-ups were unwilling to risk them being destroyed just to obliterate some insignificant monster fodder.

The lower-tier combatants on the monster side were far cheaper than humans could have ever imagined. So much so that over these past few days, many couldn’t help but wonder if the Demons instigating this war did so with the intention of culling the excessively dense population of wild Demons within their borders. While a massive number of lower-tier Demons would eventually produce more powerful individuals through ordinary, life-or-death struggles for survival, it also rapidly intensified the competition for resources within the Demon Kingdom. In recent years, the influx of countless Demons crossing the long borders into the Human Kingdom was the best proof of this. They burned, killed, and pillaged, plundering the increasingly scarce resources on human lands like a plague of locusts. And at this moment, the battlefield before him seemed to physically manifest that very scene.

"Truly spectacular."

Ten miles was a moderate distance. With Gauss’s observational skills, he could clearly make out the races and sizes of those monsters. However, the main force of tens of thousands of monsters was surging toward the city wall; the number heading toward his mountain pass was significantly smaller. After some time passed and the first vanguard legion of Demons had crossed the five-mile mark, Gauss finally made his move.

"Go."

He waved his hand, tossing out several large chunks of clay. The clay quickly squirmed in the air, morphing and taking shape. By the time they hit the ground with a loud THUD, they had transformed into several burly Goblin Clay Giants, each possessing combat strength around level 5. Gauss didn’t expect them to kill high-tier Demons; he only hoped they could slay more Ordinary Monsters and Elite Demons on the frontal battlefield to increase the numbers in his Monster Atlas. The sheer size of the battlefield had its perks—with just a single glance, he had already spotted several monster types he hadn’t yet acquired. After giving the Goblin Clay Giants specific hunting orders, Gauss pulled his attention back.

High in the clouds above, over a dozen figures were soaring and circling. He wondered if they were finally losing their patience. Even though they flew extremely high, Gauss had spotted them immediately. He knew this had to be an arrangement by the higher-ups of the Green Dragon Army. He just didn’t know when, after gathering their intelligence, they planned to send their main force to assassinate an audacious fool like him. A trace of anticipation flashed in Gauss’s eyes as he gazed at the distant skyline.

The first batch of Demons quickly charged down the path in front of the valley. When those goblins—with their scrawny limbs, clutching broken weapons—saw the giant goblin "Green-skinned Race People" blocking the valley entrance, their brains, which were smaller than eggs, filled with confusion. They wondered why they were seeing powerful individuals of their own race here. Moreover, they looked so incredibly tall and strong, making the ordinary goblins burn with endless envy. To the low-intelligence ordinary goblins, being tall and burly was the absolute symbol of strength; the taller one was, the more powerful they were. And as for those few giant kin of theirs, even their elbows were thicker than the waists of two or three regular goblins put together.

"Careful!"

There were slightly smarter species among the monster horde as well. The Jackal-Wolf People quietly backed away while roaring to warn their comrades. Even though the language barrier between different races meant the message might not be accurately conveyed, it was the thought that counted. Before the other goblins could react, those hulking goblins sprang into action. Despite their massive physiques, their movements and speed were as swift and explosive as cannonballs.

"BOOM!"

The ground beneath their feet exploded without warning. Following that, the several massive bodies leaped high into the air, crossing dozens of meters before crashing down into the monster ranks. The poor bastards caught beneath the clay goblins were instantly crushed into pools of sticky, mushy paste. The shockwave sent dozens of surrounding monsters flying before they could dodge. They were hurled backward, slamming into the rock walls, their bodies quickly snapping in two from the immense impact. In the face of absolute power, life seemed oh so fragile.

"Retreat!"

"Shoot arrows!"

The several "behemoths" were like fierce tigers charging down a mountain, slaughtering recklessly among the monster horde. The Ordinary Monsters blocking their way couldn’t even serve the function of a speed bump. They rapidly hacked and slashed their way forward, closing in on the targets Gauss had ordered them to kill. Those were all monster types Gauss had not yet accumulated in his Monster Atlas.

A small number of Elite Demons, considering themselves strong enough, attempted to use the cover of other Demons to heavily injure these traitorous "goblins." But when their spears, Magic, and broadswords landed on those massive and completely unarmored bodies, they only inflicted wounds far lighter than imagined. And when those injuries "healed" in the blink of an eye, their expressions drastically changed. They wondered what the hell these things were. For the vast majority of Demons, they had zero exposure to niche Spells like Clay Magic. Furthermore, Gauss’s Clay Magic was different from standard summoning Magic; clay creatures were visibly a cut above in terms of how troublesome they were to deal with.
