Chapter 54: Petitions From Five Hundred Years Ago Written Wrongly Because Zorathys Made It So
Elyn’s POV
"My lady!" Rin gasped in shock.
The roles between her and Vaelory were reversed now because Vaelory grinned widely.
"What do you need to kill him, Your Highness?" Vaelory asked me.
"Are you okay?" Rin asked Vaelory, then turned to me. "You can’t kill the demon king."
"Watch me," I told her as I stood up from the chair, but she and Morthen blocked my path.
"My lady, be calm. Think this through," Morthen said calmly.
"Oh, I’m calm," I told them.
"That’s highly debatable, my lady," Rin told me. "You can’t kill the demon king. He’s the only archdemon in the realm and the strongest demon to ever exist. No one has ever fought him and lived to tell the tale."
"My story will be different then because Zorathys will be the one not living to tell the tale," I told her and tried to move, but they blocked my path again.
"Just let Her Highness move," Vaelory muttered with an eyeroll.
"Just shut up," Rin told her firmly.
Vaelory gasped but kept quiet.
"My lady, think this through. You’re a human. The king could get rid of you easily."
"Or I could get rid of him," I told them, then sighed and pointed at the papers piled up. "Do you see that?"
"I do," Morthen said, adjusting his glasses nervously. "I placed them there, after all."
"Oh wow, I had no idea," I told him with an eyeroll.
"These petitions are from about five hundred years ago and I’m sure there’s more. You don’t really expect me to go through everything from five hundred years ago until now alone, right? What has Zorathys even been doing for the past five hundred years that they piled up like this?" I demanded.
"That’s why he made the petitions easy to read. Just go straight to the point," Morthen said.
"So you mean to tell me that that ridiculous thing I read was because Zorathys made people write it that way?" I asked him.
Morthen swallowed. "Yes, my lady."
Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic and brilliant.
"And you all just went with it?" I asked.
"He’s king. And it’s a brilliant suggestion. Whenever he comes in for work, he finishes the scrolls within minutes and everyone’s worries are handled effectively," Morthen told me.
"Oh? That’s nice. Since I’m supposed to be an assistant for the fucking demon king, then he should be here right now. I’m to be an assistant. I shouldn’t be doing his fucking work for him," I told them.
"My lady..."
"Relax," I told Rin. "I don’t plan on killing Zorathys. There’s no way I can even kill him. I’m human after all—did you forget?"
That seemed to settle her down. She had no idea I was lying and that I was still going to kill Zorathys, because there was absolutely no way he could leave five hundred years of work for me to handle while he slept peacefully.
I wasn’t going to work with another Karen. I refused.
"I just want to speak with Zorathys to clarify some things," I told her. "I can’t kill Zorathys after all."
But I’ll try to.
"Oh! It seems I misunderstood then," Rin said, and I smiled widely at her.
No dear, you didn’t misunderstand anything.
"But it’ll be hard to meet with the king," Morthen spoke up. "Why don’t we just start off with—"
"Shut your mouth!"
"Yes, ma," he said immediately.
I gestured for the two blocking my path to move, and they stepped aside.
"I really thought she was going to kill him," Vaelory said with a sigh as she, Rin, and Morthen walked out of the office following me.
I made my way up the grand staircase, searching for the door to Zorathys’s room. I knew the door had an attitude of its own, but I swear it better show up—if not, I’d destroy both it and its owner.
As if the door knew I was in a bad mood, it appeared immediately just as I reached the last step.
"How did she do that?" Morthen asked in shock.
I don’t know, maybe the door is scared of me.
"The door never shows up when you need it," Rin whispered back to him.
"Maybe it recognized Her Highness," Vaelory added softly.
I ignored them and opened the door. Immediately I stepped inside, the door vanished.
You know, I wouldn’t have been surprised or mad if the person I’d been searching for was sleeping like before.
I figured sleeping was his default mode. I really thought he’d be in the air with his wings around him.
I did not expect this demon to be on his bed with that same fucking body pillow, a glass of wine in his hand as he scrolled through what I could only assume was a novel. His legs were in the air and he chuckled as he flipped through the pages.
Let’s take a moment to honor the fact that Zorathys had a nice laugh, and his chuckles did things to me I was in no way going to name.
I approached him slowly and quietly, then sat on the bed.
"Zor?" I called out sweetly.
He paused as if he had been struck by lightning and turned to me slowly with wide eyes.
Even with the look he was giving me, he still looked handsome while I looked like the second coming of a kraken.
"Firefly," he said. "Um... what... how did you get in?" he asked.
"Through the door," I told him sweetly.
"Oh, um... is this a mistake again? The door is—"
He turned, searching for the door, which was nowhere to be found.
"That’s weird," he muttered under his breath.
"Oh, this isn’t a mistake, Zor. I made sure to get it right this time. I was searching for your room after all."
He swallowed. "Okay?"
"I just found out today that I’m supposed to be your assistant. That that is the way of the demon realm. I just have one question though—why is the paperwork dating back five hundred years?" I asked him calmly.
