Chapter 55: It Seems Zorathys’ Door Listens to Elyn
Zorathys swallowed. He had suspected this right from the moment he met Elyn, but she was scary—and maybe that was part of what he found intriguing about her.
To be honest, from the very moment he had set his eyes on her, he had wanted to take her to the demon realm with him. And thankfully, he got his wish. But he should have known that just because they were engaged now did not mean that Elyn would be any less scary.
She sent all her suitors away, and some of them even cried when they left. She tried to kill her father too, in Zorathys’ presence.
Just remembering that made Zorathys swallow.
He turned, searching for the door to his room—the one that wasn’t supposed to show itself to other people when he was reading his novels—but it had betrayed him.
"Zor?" she called again.
Zorathys sometimes wished that when she called him this way, it wasn’t because she was annoyed with him. He sometimes wished she would call him this way with genuine sweetness, but that wasn’t going to be the case anytime soon.
"I asked you a question," she told him.
Zorathys nodded and then closed his book.
"Yes," he told her.
"And?"
"And the thing is... I’ve been extremely busy, you know, so I may have postponed work for a while," he told her.
His words were lies, but it didn’t matter as long as he had an excuse. Elyn was giving off the aura of an archdemon, even though he knew very well that she was human. She looked like she could kill him at any chance she got.
"Busy doing what?" she asked him, then pointed at the book he was reading. "Busy reading a novel?"
"Among other things," he shrugged.
She laughed loudly.
"Oh this is funny. This is so funny." Then suddenly, like someone had turned off a switch, her laugh stopped.
"You are telling me that you’ve been busy reading a novel and that you left petitions to pile up for over five hundred years?!" she screeched.
Zorathys covered his ears. "Keep your voice down, Firefly, it hurts my ears."
She glared at him, and he immediately put his hands down.
"Sorry."
"You know, I wouldn’t even be mad if I found you sleeping," she told him. "That’s your default mode after all. You are always tired and always sleeping—but you are reading a novel? A novel while I’m awake at the crack of dawn trying to make sense of the stupid petitions you made your people write—"
"It was to make the work easier. Most times the work piles up, so I made it easier for me—"
"The work wouldn’t pile up if you would just come into the office every day and do it. You can start little and before you know it, you are done," she argued.
"But I’m tired," Zorathys told her.
"Tired from what? From reading your novel?" she asked him.
Zorathys nodded but then shook his head when he saw the look on her face.
"Okay, fine," he said with a sigh. "I’ll do the work later."
Elyn glared at him. "What did you just say?"
"I’ll do the work later," he told her.
"Zor," she called sweetly, and Zorathys shivered.
"You are not going to do the work later. You are not going to leave your work of over five hundred years for later—later which I know is likely never for you. So you better get your lazy ass up from that bed and go with me to the office so you can start working," she told him.
Elyn looked extremely scary, and Zorathys was a few seconds away from disappearing from her sight.
"I’m tired though," he told her in a small voice.
"And I’m not tired?" Elyn asked him. "Get out of the bed. And let’s get to work."
"Can I do so after I get some sleep?" he asked her.
"Get out of the bed!" Elyn screeched.
Zorathys sighed like the world was ending. Elyn watched him with a glare, and he sighed again but made no move to stand up.
She raised her hand and started counting with her fingers.
"One—"
"Fine. I’ll do it," Zorathys said.
He crawled out of the bed like the world was ending and then, with a snap of his fingers, changed out of his sleepwear.
Although what he wore wasn’t much different from his sleepwear—it was black, loose, and exposed his chest, which Elyn had to admit was quite a beautiful chest.
Zorathys stared at her with a yawn and then turned again, searching for his door. He could leave the room without the door, but he saw an opportunity to avoid work.
"The door isn’t in the room. We can’t leave after all," he told her.
Elyn turned around with a glare and, like she had summoned the door with her mind, it appeared just in front of them and shook like it was scared.
Zorathys glared at the door. How was it that his own door was betraying him like this?
He tried to signal the door to disappear, but it didn’t listen. It just stayed in front of Elyn, waiting.
"Well, what do you know? The door is here after all," Elyn said to him with a bright smile.
Zorathys grumbled under his breath. "It shouldn’t be here."
Elyn opened the door and gave Zorathys a mock bow.
"After you, Your Highness," she told him.
"I thought it was ladies first?" Zorathys asked her.
"No, it’s lazy people first. Now get out," she told him.
Zorathys sighed and walked through the door, with Elyn following closely. Immediately they came out of his room, the door disappeared.
Zorathys felt like throwing the door into a volcano. They’d been together for years, and now it was betraying him.
It was only after he heard a shocked sound that Zorathys noticed that there were people around—one being Ignivar, who stared with wide eyes. Then Rin, Morthen, and the human maid who had screamed that the demon realm was filled with lava.
What she didn’t know was that she was quite correct. Ignivar’s territory was filled with lava.
"Time to work, future demon husband," Elyn said to Zorathys with a wide smile.
Zorathys looked up to the skies. He should not have insisted on bringing Elyn with him to the demon realm, even if he was intrigued by her.
He was in for a whole lot of inconvenience.
