Chapter 428: Kazuhiro’s interference, Part 1
Thankfully, Kouhei managed to stabilize himself in midair before his momentum could carry him straight into one of the nearby buildings. His wings spread wide behind him as he fought against the force that had sent him flying, and after a few unstable moments, he finally managed to regain control of his body. He took a brief breath and immediately composed himself, refusing to waste even a second while Via was still somewhere nearby.
Kouhei quickly looked around, searching for any sign of his opponent. He couldn’t see Via at first, but his instincts suddenly picked up something that his eyes hadn’t managed to catch yet. An overwhelming pressure was coming from directly above him, and the sensation alone was enough to make his entire body tense.
Kouhei immediately raised his sword of light and positioned it directly above himself, preparing for whatever attack was about to come down on him.
A figure descended from the sky.
Via was heading straight toward him again, wearing the same strange and excited expression that had remained on his face throughout their entire battle. He looked as though he was having the time of his life, which was honestly irritating considering that Kouhei was currently doing everything he could just to keep up with him.
Via raised his sword above his head before swinging it downward with tremendous force.
Kouhei reacted immediately, bringing his sword of light up to block the incoming strike. The two weapons collided with a violent impact that sent a shockwave through the surrounding area.
Kouhei managed to block the attack, but the sheer pressure and overwhelming power contained within Via’s strike were enough to force him downward anyway. His arms trembled from the impact, and before he could properly recover his position, his body was sent falling from the air.
The acceleration was almost instantaneous.
Kouhei dropped toward the ground like a stone, his body rapidly picking up speed as he fell. He tried to stabilize himself, but the force from Via’s attack had disrupted his balance too badly for him to recover properly in midair.
A moment later, Kouhei slammed into the ground.
The impact sent dust and small pieces of debris outward, but fortunately, he managed to land with both feet beneath him instead of crashing down helplessly. His knees bent from the force, and he slid backward slightly before finally coming to a stop.
He immediately looked upward.
Via was already laughing.
"Kahahaha! You really are awesome! You know that, don’t you? I’ve never seen anyone who is quite like you!"
Via cackled while swinging his sword, his movements becoming increasingly difficult for Kouhei to predict. His attacks weren’t simply fast, either. The stranger problem was the way Via moved his body while attacking, because his movements often looked completely unreasonable from Kouhei’s perspective.
It was almost as if Via’s body didn’t care about normal principles of movement.
He could suddenly change directions in the middle of an attack, twist his body at an awkward angle, or shift his momentum in a way that Kouhei wasn’t expecting. Trying to read him was like trying to guess the movement of someone who had forgotten that gravity existed.
Kouhei continued doing his best to block him.
One strike came from the side, and Kouhei caught it with his sword of light. Another came from above, forcing him to raise his weapon again. Via immediately followed that with another attack from an entirely different angle, leaving Kouhei barely enough time to move his sword into position.
The pressure continued building.
Kouhei was doing his best to maintain his defense, but Via’s constant attacks were gradually making it harder and harder for him to dodge or block properly. He couldn’t simply focus on one particular movement because Via was capable of changing his attack pattern without warning.
"Kekekekeke!"
Via’s maniacal laughter echoed through the battlefield as he continued attacking without giving Kouhei any chance to catch his breath.
He wasn’t slowing down.
If anything, Via seemed to be enjoying himself more as the fight continued.
Kouhei gritted his teeth and blocked another strike, feeling the force travel through his arms. He immediately tried to counterattack, but Via had already moved away from the position where Kouhei expected him to be.
That unpredictability was becoming a serious problem.
Kouhei could fight against someone stronger than himself if he could understand how that person moved. He could adjust his timing, anticipate attacks, and find openings. Via, however, seemed determined to make all of those things as difficult as possible.
Then, without warning, Via suddenly stopped.
His sword halted, and his attention shifted toward something beyond Kouhei.
"Sarushima..." Via said, his expression changing into a faint smile. "I didn’t expect you to come here all of a sudden, and yourself, nonetheless."
Kouhei turned his head toward the direction Via was looking.
A man was standing nearby.
It was none other than Sarushima Kazuhiro, the head of the Sarushima House.
"Via, I didn’t expect to find you here," Kazuhiro said, staring directly at Via with an expression filled with extreme disdain. "I heard that you’ve been in Russia, and that you’ve been living your life while hiding from your former associates among the angels. That is why I find it rather strange to see you here."
"It’s not that strange at all," Via replied with a casual shrug. "I heard a rather interesting story, and I wanted to see whether it was actually true."
"Interesting? What exactly did you hear?"
Kazuhiro narrowed his eyes slightly.
If Via had heard something interesting enough to make him leave whatever hiding place he had been staying in, then it must have been something significant. Via wasn’t exactly the kind of person who suddenly decided to travel somewhere simply because he was bored.
"I heard that the Child of Prophecy has been found," Via said.
His smile widened slightly.
"I honestly couldn’t believe that a prophecy like that could actually become reality. Most people thought it was nothing more than a myth, so naturally, I became interested."
"I see..."
Kazuhiro sighed quietly.
So that was why Via had appeared here.
He had heard rumors about the Child of Prophecy and decided to come see the person with his own eyes. Considering Via’s personality, Kazuhiro wouldn’t have been surprised if killing that Child had also been part of the reason he came. However, it seems like Via still didn’t have any idea that the person he was fighting right now was the one he was looking.
