Chapter 16: THE BROKERAGE FLOOR
The Smog of Sentinel City was heavy over the Black Market district, stained in shades of synthetic crimson red color and chemical violet.
Far above the lower slums, luxurious corporate airships drifted silently between the glistening glass spires of the high sectors, completely cut off from the grime below. Down on the rain-slicked pavement of District 7, humanity’s forgotten surplus scrambled through the crowded night bazaars, trying to survive another cycle under the cold tyranny of the Hunter system.
Noah Kurtz walked through the narrow, crowded streets with a slow, relaxed slouch, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his worn dark coat.
To any passing corporate scout or predatory street thug, he looked like nothing more than an exhausted, ordinary twenty-two-year-old civilian returning from a brutal factory double shift. His posture was perfectly ordinary. His messy black hair fell loosely over his face, masking the piercing, ancient depth reflecting within his steel-gray eyes.
The perfect camouflage. He thought.
Within the inner lining of his coat, the fist-sized, dark purple crystal of the mutated Ghoul Chieftain was in his pocket, radiating a faint, icy frequency that resonated directly with him.
Noah turned down a damp, poorly lit alleyway, leaving the noise of the public market behind. He stopped before a heavy, rusted iron security door that bore no signage beyond a faded, cracked holographic seal of a long-bankrupt logistical corporation.
He didn’t knock. He simply reached out and pressed his thumb against a hidden, grease-stained bio-scanner built into the doorframe.
Beep.
The heavy hydraulic locks released with a loud, mechanical hiss, and the iron door slowly swung inward, revealing a flight of concrete stairs leading straight down into the earth. Noah stepped inside, the door automatically slamming shut behind him as the overwhelming smell of old paper, cold ozone, and cheap synthetic energy drinks washed over his senses.
This was the Brokerage Floor—the illegal underground exchange where dropouts, rogue freelancers, and black-market brokers traded items the International Hunter Association tightly restricted.
Noah walked down the stairs, his boots clicking against the concrete until he reached a massive, subterranean warehouse converted into an unregulated trading hub. Dozens of heavily shrouded individuals sat behind makeshift metallic counters, displaying illegally harvested monster parts, cracked mana cores, and unregistered weapons.
He bypassed the common stalls entirely, his steady gaze scanning the room until he located a reinforced glass storefront at the far end of the warehouse floor. The neon sign above it flickered weakly: Vance Antiquities & Salvage.
Noah pushed the glass door open, a soft electronic chime echoing through the small, cluttered room.
The shop was a chaotic disaster zone. Towering wooden shelves and metallic filing cabinets stretched from floor to ceiling, literally overflowing with ancient historical scrolls, cracked stone tablets, and rusted relics from long-extinct eras. Piles of illegal historical archives lay scattered across the floor like mountains of forgotten garbage.
Sitting behind a massive steel desk in the center of the mess was a young man with wildly messy, silver hair and thick, rectangular glasses that sat askew on his nose. He was hyper-frantically typing away on three holographic monitors simultaneously, his face illuminated by the bright blue screens.
This was ALISTAIR VANCE. An eccentric, hyper-caffeinated chaos researcher considered a complete failure by his prominent corporate clan because his unique talent possessed zero combat value same as Noah.
"I told you, I’m busy!" Alistair barked without looking up from his monitors, his fingers moving across the holographic keyboards at a breakneck speed. "If you’re here to sell low-grade scrap from a standard F-rank Rift, take it to the brokers outside! I am on the verge of decrypting a pre-Riftfall architectural framework, and I am out of synthetic energy drinks!"
Noah didn’t go out. He simply walked toward the steel desk, his steps completely soundless, passive sequence of the Ashen Step to erase his physical friction against the floor.
He reached into his inner pocket, pulled out the three low-grade blue essence stones he had gathered from the catacomb, and dropped them onto the metal desk with a soft click.
Alistair didn’t even glance at them. "Standard iron-grade cores. Useless to me. Take them away."
Noah’s expression remained perfectly flat. Slowly, he reached into his inner lining once more and pulled out the massive, fist-sized purple crystal. He placed it directly next to the blue stones.
The moment the dark purple relic touched the metal desk, a sudden, heavy pressure dropped over the small room. The ambient room temperature plummeted instantly, a thin layer of white frost rapidly creeping across the edges of Alistair’s desk as the crystal pulsed with a dangerous, volatile dark frequency.
Alistair froze completely.
His fingers stopped dead over the holographic keyboards. Slowly, his head snapped toward the metal desk, his rectangular glasses slipping slightly further down his nose as his eyes widened behind the thick lenses.
"What... what the hell is this?" Alistair whispered, his voice suddenly losing all of its frantic energy as he stared at the pulsing purple core.
He reached out with a trembling hand, pulling a specialized mechanical monocular from his drawer and fitting it over his right eye. He leaned incredibly close to the crystal, analyzing the intricate, glowing purple networks within the structure.
"The mana density... it’s completely wrong," Alistair muttered frantically, his breathing becoming uneven. "This isn’t standard modern mana. The geometric matrix inside this core has been compressed using a high-frequency internal pressure method... an extinct synchronization style from the 14th Reincarnation Cycle!"
He violently snapped his head up, staring directly at Noah like he was looking at a ghost.
"Where did you get this?" Alistair demanded, his voice shaking with pure, unadulterated excitement. Noah answered saying Sector 21. "The Association logs said Sector 21 was a standard Iron-Grade Catacomb that suffered a random spatial collapse tonight! No party entered! No high-rank Guild cleared it!"
"I found it in the rubble before the gate imploded," Noah replied softly,"I am just a registered porter, Mr. Vance. I got lucky."
"Lucky?!" Alistair let out a wild, sharp laugh, slamming his hands against the desk. "You don’t just ’stumble’ over a mutated Ghoul Chieftain’s core from an extinct era! The structural density alone would liquefy a normal civilian’s neural pathways if they carried it without a high-tier containment field!"
Why is this guy talking like some cranky old man? He looks only a year or two older than me. Ahh...Seriously.
Noah didn’t blink. He simply reached into his coat once more and pulled out his solid bronze preliminary hunter card, placing it calmly on top of the holographic terminal between them.
[Awakening Registry]
Name: Noah Kurtz
Talent: Memory Cabinet
Rank: F
Alistair stared blankly at the bronze card. His frantic mind struggled desperately to connect the dots, but nothing made sense anymore. An F-rank late-awakener with a utility archival skill was standing before him, casually dropping relics that could alter historical research parameters.
"Memory Cabinet..." Alistair murmured, his silver hair shifting as he shook his head in sheer disbelief. "An archival talent. You... you can perceive the structural data lines, can’t you?"
"I just have a good memory," Noah murmured dryly.
"Listen to me, Noah Kurtz," Alistair said, his eyes burning with a sudden, fanatical intensity as he grabbed the purple core. H e changed his approach and gave Noah a wild grin. "The major corporate Guilds and the Archive Church would pay millions of credits to get their hands on this. They would lock you in an interrogation cell within an hour to find out how you survived. But I won’t report this. If you let me analyze this core, I will pay you 50,000 credits immediately under the black-market table. No questions asked. No Association logs."
Noah’s lips curved into a very faint, melancholic smile. This was exactly why he had bypassed the official Association channels. The underground was corrupt, but it was predictable. Greed was a language he knew how to navigate flawlessly.
"Deal," Noah said softly. "But I need one more thing."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a clean piece of parchment, sliding it across the desk toward the scholar. Engraved perfectly across the paper was a flawless, hand-drawn replication of the silver rune he had discovered on the triangular obsidian relic in the alleyway.
"Tell me what this symbol means," Noah commanded.
Alistair picked up the parchment, his eyes scanning the silver engraving. The moment his gaze locked onto the shifting, geometric lines of the rune, the eccentric scholar completely stopped breathing. His face turned entirely pale, the mechanical monocular falling from his eye and clattering loudly against the steel desk.
"This... this is a Prime Seal," Alistair whispered, his voice trembling with genuine, deep-seated terror.
"Where did you see this, Noah? This isn’t just an extinct language. This is the forbidden script of the ancient entity labeled Cox. The universe itself systematically erased this name before our cycle even began."
Noah didn’t answer. He simply kept his hands in his pockets, his steel-gray eyes locking onto Alistair’s terrified expression with an absolute, freezing silence that seemed to swallow the light in the small shop.
The system text box in his mind suddenly ticked upward, glowing with a soft silver borders:
DING.

The heavy glass door of the antiquities shop suddenly began to rattle violently, a freezing, razor-sharp wind pressure expanding through the warehouse outside as a powerful presence moved toward the entrance.
Noah turned his head slowly toward the frosted glass door, his posture tightening into a coiling, minimalist stance beneath his dark coat.
The past was no longer just a memory. It was actively hunting him down.
