Chapter 26: NOVACOX VAULT
The subterranean vault fell into a heavy, absolute silence once again.
The lingering scent of burnt hydraulic fluid and rusted iron slowly drifted through the cold air, rising from the pile of dark alloy scrap where the fifteen-foot Glitched Guardian had collapsed moments prior.
Jiho Park dragged his faded slide sandals over the cracked flagstones, letting out another long, jaw-cracking yawn as he nudged a broken, rusted gear with his big toe.
"Man, Master," Jiho mumbled sleepily, scratching the back of his neck while slinging his canvas duffel bag over his broad shoulder. "That tin can went down fast. I didn’t even get a chance to stretch my legs properly."
Noah Kurtz didn’t turn around. His hands remained shoved deep into the pockets of his dark coat as he stepped calmly over the scattered metal debris, his steel-gray eyes fixed entirely on the center of the hall.
"It was an automated security protocol," Noah replied softly, his voice a steady pool of calm. "It relied on brute kinetic output. Against someone who completely rejects kinetic friction, it was structurally dead the moment it swung its hammer."
"Right, right," Jiho chuckled lazily, his stomach suddenly letting out a thunderous, low rumble that echoed off the high stone ceiling. "Speaking of structural integrity, my stomach is completely collapsing, Master. You promised me another bowl of that soup once we finished down here."
"Let me secure the archive first," Noah said dryly.
He stopped directly before the monolithic pedestal standing in the center of the chamber.
The structure was carved from a single, seamless block of polished black obsidian, stands six feet tall, and was covered in intricate geometric lines that matched the exact silver runes Noah had drawn on Alistair Vance’s parchment. Floating two feet above the pedestal was an ancient, metallic vault chest, bound tightly in thick alloy chains that pulsed with a dim, lingering silver light.
The moment Noah stood within three feet of the pedestal, the triangular obsidian fragment resting against his ribs inside his coat inner lining began to vibrate rapidly.
The silver rune engraved on the small stone flared with intense heat, humming at a precise frequency that resonated directly into his meridians.
Circulate.
Noah drew a slow, rhythmic breath, guiding a thin thread of cultivated Ki from the base of his spine down through his right arm. He extended his hand, pressing his bare palm flat against the cool obsidian face of the pedestal.
DING.

The silver system notifications flickered before Noah’s vision in rapid succession.
The moment his internal Ki seeped into the geometric grooves of the pedestal, the ancient silver runes carved across the stone lit up one by one, glowing with a brilliant, blinding starlight.
The thick alloy chains wrapped around the floating metallic chest began to hum at a terrifyingly high frequency.
CRACK!
Hairline fractures spread across the links. With a sound like breaking glass, the heavy chains shattered into hundreds of glowing dust particles, dissolving harmlessly into the cold air.
The metallic vault chest slowly descended, landing onto the obsidian pedestal with a soft, mechanical click.
Psssshh.
A soft hiss of pressurized, centuries-old vacuum air escaped from the seams as the heavy metallic lid automatically swung open outward.
Inside the chest, resting on a bed of dark velvet-like petrified cloth, were two items.
The first was a second triangular stone fragment made of dark, polished obsidian, identical in shape to the one Noah had retrieved from the alleyway wall in Sector 21, but engraved with a far more complex silver rune structure—Record Fragment #015.
The second item was a sleek, double-slotted leather sheath holding a pair of matching twin daggers.
Noah reached into the chest, his steady fingers wrapping around the hilt of the first dagger.
The hilt was wrapped in coarse, dark leather that gripped his palm perfectly. The blade itself was ten inches long, forged from a dark, matte-black obsidian alloy that absorbed the ambient light in the room rather than reflecting it. There was no mana core embedded in the guard, no flashy elemental enchantments, and no modern Association registration stamp.
It was pure, unadulterated cold iron fused with high-density kinetic dampening alloy—a weapon crafted specifically for silent, high-precision execution.
The moment his skin made contact with the hilt, his integrated Ash-Walker instincts lit up instantly.
His mind calculated the center of mass, the balance point, and the aerodynamic resistance of the twin blades in less than a microsecond. In his hands, the weapons felt less like external tools and more like natural extensions of his own arms.
"Whoa," Jiho blinked sleepily, leaning his broad frame over Noah’s shoulder to peer into the chest. "Those look pretty sharp, Master. Not very edible, though."
Noah ignored the comment, turning the dagger over in his hand before sliding it smoothly into the double sheath pinned to his belt.
Then, he picked up Record Fragment #015.
The moment Noah’s fingers touched the surface of the second obsidian fragment, a violent, ice-cold shockwave exploded directly behind his eyes.
DING.

The subterranean vault vanished from his sight for a split second.
Noah found himself standing once again within the vast, infinite abyss of the Memory Cabinet.
Around him, the monolithic stone cabinets and floating shelves hummed with a deep, resonant rumble. At the base of the lowest wooden section, several new drawers made of dark, petrified bark unlocked simultaneously, their rusted iron padlocks crumbling into gray dust.
A massive flood of compressed conceptual knowledge, structural schematics, and ancient tactical data rushed directly into his neural pathways.
It was not magical power or raw physical strength. It was pure, unadulterated perspective.
Detailed architectural blueprints of pre-Cataclysm subterranean bunkers flashed through his mind, alongside environmental tracking formulas, advanced Ki circulation pathways for speed, and the complete, lethal execution forms of The Silent Blade art.
He saw images of ancient cities collapsing under crimson skies, heard the desperate shouts of vanguard commanders from the 14th Cycle, and felt the lingering, melancholic weight of a world that had fought and died against the same Rifts currently threatening modern Earth.
Noah opened his eyes back in the subterranean vault, drawing a deep, steadying breath as reality locked back into place.
His steel-gray eyes glinted with a chilling, clinical depth in the dim silver light of the pedestal.
His physical body remained unchanged on the outside, still appearing as a lean, slouching twenty-two-year-old F-rank commoner. But internally, his neural grid had adapted completely to the physical demands of his new skills.
"Master?" Jiho asked, scratching his cheek as he looked at Noah’s calm face. "You okay? You looked like you zoned out for a second."
"I’m fine," Noah replied dryly, slipping Record Fragment #015 into the inner lining of his dark coat right beside the first fragment and his bronze license card. "The extraction is complete."
Act IV: Ascending to the Surface
Noah turned his back on the obsidian pedestal, adjusting the collar of his coat against the cold draft that had begun to circulate through the room.
With Record Fragment #015 secured and his synchronization rate raised to 0.12%, his Wood Tier authority was now fully saturated. He possessed the complete foundational blueprints of the 14th Cycle, twin weapons designed to bypass modern scanner arrays, and a method to move undetected through the world.
"Let’s head back," Noah said, stepping past the pile of rusted Guardian scrap toward the exit shaft. "The vault is closing."
As if responding to his words, the glowing silver runes along the walls slowly began to fade, returning the ancient basalt chamber to its dormant, pitch-black state.
"Finally," Jiho cheered lazily, swinging his oversized canvas duffel bag over his shoulder as he trudged after Noah with his slide sandals clicking against the stone. "First thing we do when we get back to the surface is find a kitchen. I’m going to eat three whole bowls of that soup, Master."
"Two bowls," Noah corrected calmly as they reached the vertical drop shaft leading six levels up. "And you’re carrying the gear."
"Deal," Jiho grinned, his droopy eyes flashing with absolute satisfaction.
Noah looked up into the dark tunnel leading back to the surface of Sector 21.
Down here, six levels beneath the earth, he had successfully retrieved a piece of his lost history without triggering a single alarm on the International Hunter Association’s server networks. To the high-sector guilds, the corporate airship fleets, and the watchful eyes of the Archive Church, Noah Kurtz was still just an insignificant, bottom-tier F-rank porter shuffling through the lower slums.
And as long as the world remained blind to the truth, the ghost of Sentinel City would continue to harvest the forgotten secrets of the universe in the dark.
Noah activated the baseline flow of the Ashen Step, his boots gliding soundless across the earth as he began his ascent back into the night.
