Chapter 25: THE GUARDIAN
The heavy iron gate swung open completely, its thirty-foot frame grinding against the ancient stone floor before locking into the thick basalt doorframes with a final, echoing clank.
Beyond the threshold lay a pitch-black central chamber, vast and cold.
The atmospheric pressure inside the room was entirely different from the corridors above. It didn’t smell of damp earth or modern mana. The air was dry, dense, and thick with the suffocating, heavy tang of raw historical friction and centuries of untouched isolation.
Jiho Park stepped across the threshold first, his faded slide sandals clicking lazily against the stone as he rubbed his sleepy eyes. He swung his oversized canvas duffel bag over his shoulder and looked around the pitch-black void.
"Man," Jiho mumbled, letting out a long yawn. "Master, it’s darker than a broken refrigerator down here. You sure we didn’t walk into a dead end?"
Noah Kurtz stepped smoothly alongside him, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his dark coat. His posture remained relaxed, but his steel-gray eyes were locked onto the absolute center of the room.
"It’s not a dead end," Noah replied softly, his voice a steady pool of calm.
The moment Noah’s boots touched the floor of the inner vault, the triangular obsidian fragment resting against his ribs began to pulse violently. A soft, silver light flared deep within the chamber, humming in a precise, rhythmic frequency that resonated straight into his lower meridians.
DING.

[Primary Anchor Chamber Reached]
[NovaCox Vault Matrix Unlocked]
[Record Fragment #015 Detected]
[System Notice: External Tracking Card Failure]
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The silver holographic screen flickered before Noah’s vision. Down here, six levels beneath the earth, the Hunter Association’s automated tracking arrays built into his bronze card were completely severed. The server logs couldn’t record his coordinates, his kinetic output, or his energy signature.
To the modern world, he had completely dropped off the map.
"Master, look," Jiho said, pointing a thick finger toward the center of the hall. "There’s something glowing."
In the middle of the massive vault stood a monolithic pedestal made of solid black obsidian, carved with the exact geometric lines and shifting silver runes Noah had drawn on Alistair’s parchment. Floating directly above the pedestal was an ancient, metallic vault chest bound in thick alloy chains.
However, before Noah could take another step toward the pedestal, a low, subterranean rumble shook the entire vault.
RUMBLE!
The stone flagstones beneath their feet trembled violently, sending deep cracks spiderwebbing across the floor. Dust and pulverized stone rained down from the high ceiling as four massive mechanical pillars situated around the pedestal began to split open.
Thick, dark purple mana—mixed with ancient, volatile kinetic pressure—flooded out of the pillars, pooling around the center of the room.
"Groannn..."
A sound echoed through the chamber—a deep, mechanical screech that sounded like grinding tectonic plates.
From the center of the dark mist, a colossal silhouette slowly rose to its feet.
It was not a standard automaton. It was the Glitched Guardian—a high-grade, biological-mechanical war construct left behind by the extinct 14th Cycle to protect the core archive.
The monster stood over fifteen feet tall. Its massive, bulky frame was constructed from overlapping plates of ancient dark alloy and petrified iron, fused directly with dark, mutated muscle fibers that glowed with a sickening purple light.
It possessed six thick, mechanical limbs—four massive iron legs that crushed the stone beneath them, and two towering, armored arms. In its right hand, the Guardian held an colossal, eight-foot war hammer made of spiked black iron, while its left arm was fused into a massive, wall-like tower shield.
Where its head should have been rested a single, giant optical lens that flickered with a violent, crimson light.
BUZZ!
The crimson lens locked directly onto Noah and Jiho.
[CRITICAL SECURITY ALERT]
[Glitched Core Construct Initialized]
[Target Classification: Eradicate All Intruders]
"Whoa," Jiho blinked sleepily, looking up at the fifteen-foot iron monstrosity towering over them. "That’s a big tin can. Looks a lot tougher than the four guards outside."
"It’s a Glitched Guardian," Noah said dryly, his gray eyes analyzing the monster’s heavy iron plates and joint mechanics in a fraction of a second. "Its armor is thick enough to withstand C-rank elemental spells, and its power core runs on compressed kinetic pressure. A standard party would need an A-rank vanguard squad just to crack its outer shell."
Jiho let out another massive yawn, stretching his arms high above his head until his broad back popped.
"A-rank vanguard squad, huh?" Jiho chuckled sleepily, taking three lazy steps forward until he stood directly between Noah and the giant machine. "Master, I told you earlier. As long as you make me another bowl of that soup when we get back to the surface, I’m your indestructible shield."
"Don’t waste energy attacking its shield," Noah instructed calmly from behind. "Just hold its balance."
"Got it, Master," Jiho grinned, his droopy eyes flashing with an absurdly reliable, terrifying S-Rank confidence.
"ROAAAR!"
The Glitched Guardian let out a deafening, mechanical roar that vibrated through the stone walls. It raised its colossal eight-foot war hammer high into the air, the spiked iron head surging with crackling purple energy and thousands of pounds of hydraulic pressure.
With a sound like a falling meteor, the fifteen-foot mechanical beast lunged forward, swinging the war hammer downward straight toward Noah and Jiho!
The kinetic force alone was enough to shatter an armored vehicle into flat scrap metal.
Jiho didn’t dodge. He didn’t draw a shield, nor did he channel flashy, high-tier defensive mana spells.
He simply stood there in his oversized yellow t-shirt and faded slide sandals, planting his feet loosely on the cracked flagstones. He casually raised his left arm, crossing his forearm horizontally over his head to block the blow.
Circulate.
[Absolute Inertia Activated]
BOOM!
An explosive shockwave erupted across the entire vault. The air pressure detonated outward in a visible wave, blowing away the surrounding dust and shattering the stone floor in a thirty-foot radius.
The colossal war hammer slammed directly onto Jiho Park’s bare forearm.
Yet Jiho didn’t bend his knees. His slide sandals didn’t slide back by even a single millimeter. His arm didn’t bruise, his bone didn’t crack, and his yellow t-shirt didn’t even tear.
He stood there like an invincible, immovable mountain—an absolute human wall that rejected the physical laws of kinetic force entirely.
"Is that it?" Jiho asked, looking up at the fifteen-foot Guardian while scratching his cheek with his free hand. "My Master’s spice mix hit harder than that swing."
CRACK!
The immense kinetic rebound of hitting an immovable object traveled violently back up the Guardian’s weapon. The eight-foot spiked war hammer shattered instantly, exploding into dozens of sharp iron fragments that rained down onto the flagstones.
The Glitched Guardian froze. Its crimson optical lens flickered frantically as its ancient logic matrix broke down, completely unable to process how an unarmored human frame had erased thousands of pounds of hydraulic force without taking a single point of damage.
Structurally, the Guardian was completely off-balance, its heavy torso leaning forward from the failed strike, exposing its upper back and neck joints.
Behind his invincible human fortress, Noah Kurtz’s steel-gray eyes glinted with a chilling, clinical depth.
The opening was wide open.
"Good job, Jiho," Noah murmured dryly.
His slouching posture vanished instantly. Noah shifted his weight onto his right heel, drawing a deep, rhythmic breath as the thread of cultivated Ki ignited in his meridians.
Circulate.
Noah activated [Ashen Step].
His body blurred into a soundless, lethal advance, gliding across the shattered flagstones like a shadow detaching itself from the dark.
He didn’t make a sound. He didn’t emit a single trace of kinetic friction.
Before the Glitched Guardian could recover its stance or raise its tower shield, Noah slid straight through the machine’s blind spot, rising smoothly behind its massive armored neck.
His hand moved like lightning. He reached into his coat and pulled out his cheap steel utility knife, aligning the blade with a microscopic, unarmored engine vent right beneath the Guardian’s core processing unit.
The Silent Blade form activated naturally from his muscle memory.
Puch.
Noah drove the small steel knife straight through the microscopic vent, giving the handle a precise, clockwise twist.
Circulate.
A dense spark of Ki shot from his fingertips, traveling through the steel and detonating directly inside the Guardian’s internal logic core.
The crimson optical lens in the Guardian’s head died instantly.
The massive fifteen-foot mechanical construct lost all power. Its dark alloy armor plates rusted rapidly, and the entire giant automaton collapsed onto the stone floor with a heavy, final crash, disintegrating into a harmless pile of scrap and gray dust.
Silence returned to the ancient subterranean vault once more.
Jiho Park turned around, blinking sleepily at the pile of rust behind him before nudging a piece of broken gear with his slide sandal.
"Man, Master," Jiho chuckled lazily, scratching the back of his neck. "You really know how to hit where it hurts. You didn’t even break a sweat."
Noah wiped his utility knife clean against a cloth before slipping it back into his inner coat sheath.
"Let me handle the vault," Noah replied dryly, stepping past the pile of scrap toward the obsidian pedestal in the center of the room.
The Glitched Guardian was gone, and the path to the past was finally clear.
