Chapter 3 — IMPOSSIBLE EFFICIENCY
The efficiency number was wrong.
That was Dhiraj’s first thought when he saw it — not *it worked*, not *this changes everything*, just a flat, professional suspicion that the sensor calibration had drifted overnight and he was about to waste the next hour proving it.
He ran diagnostics anyway.
The fabrication workshop was mostly empty at 7:18 a.m., which was the only reason he used it. The department had three rooms like this — tools worn down to their last usable decade, shelves lined with abandoned student projects gathering the particular dust of things that had been given up on before they were finished. A ceiling fan turned overhead with a noise suggesting it had already filed for early retirement and was simply waiting for someone to process the paperwork.
Dhiraj had cleared a workstation near the back wall, away from the entrance, away from the window that faced the main corridor. He’d been here since six. The prototype sat under a fabrication cloth he’d found draped over a half-finished robotics arm someone had labeled FINAL FINAL WORKING VERSION in faded marker.
He pulled the cloth back and powered the system on.
The display loaded.
96.4%.
Same number as twenty minutes ago. Same number as an hour ago, when he’d first seen it and immediately assumed instrument error.
He stared at it for a moment with the expression of someone being handed an answer they’d asked for but hadn’t actually expected to receive.
> OBJECTIVE PROGRESSION UPDATED.
The System’s voice arrived in his skull without warning, the way it always did — cold, declarative, utterly indifferent to the fact that there was a human nervous system on the receiving end of it.
> CONTAINMENT STABILITY: VERIFIED.
> THERMAL REGULATION: 96.4%
> DISCHARGE TESTING REQUIRED FOR OBJECTIVE COMPLETION.
"I’m aware," Dhiraj said quietly.
The fan kept turning. Outside, someone in the corridor laughed at something on their phone. A truck horn sustained itself somewhere near the campus gate for a duration that suggested the driver had somewhere very important to be and very little faith that anyone would let them get there.
The world was operating normally.
He looked at the prototype.
He’d rebuilt the entire architecture from scratch — layered compression geometry instead of direct density stacking, a thermal recursion cascade he still didn’t have a proper name for, conductive alignment channels spaced at intervals that his hands had known before his calculations confirmed them. It had taken most of the night. His right shoulder had not forgiven him for the angle he’d maintained for four straight hours.
But the number on the screen was 96.4%.
Current theoretical ceiling for solid-state battery systems, according to the three most recent published papers he’d read: approximately 78%, under ideal laboratory conditions, with materials that cost more per gram than the entire workshop’s equipment budget.
He wasn’t using ideal conditions. He was using salvaged components, a wobbling workstation, and tools that had last been calibrated sometime before he started his undergraduate degree.
The diagnostics were not lying.
Which meant something else was true instead.

"You vanished after graduation like a traumatized scientist in a low-budget streaming show."
Dhiraj looked up.
Rohit Sharma stood at the workshop entrance holding two paper cups of vending machine coffee, wearing the expression of someone who had been searching for a while and was trying to decide whether to be relieved or annoyed. Tall, sleep-deprived, mechanical engineering graduate — one of the few people Dhiraj could tolerate for extended periods without developing a migraine. Mostly because Rohit complained about everything with such genuine commitment that it stopped feeling like complaining and started feeling like journalism.
He walked over and set one of the cups down beside the workstation.
"You missed placement prep. Again."
"I was here."
"That’s not the same thing as a reason."
Rohit’s gaze moved past him to the prototype, and something shifted in his face — the particular sequence engineers made when they encountered something that didn’t fit neatly into what they already knew. First curiosity. Then confusion. Then the specific expression of a man about to argue with a measurement.
He picked up the notebook from the table.
Turned a page.
Then another.
"Dhiraj."
"Mm."
"What exactly am I looking at."
"Battery stabilization architecture."
"I understood those words individually." Rohit set the notebook down and pointed at the compression geometry diagram. "This configuration. This shouldn’t work."
"It does."
"No, I mean physically. The heat distribution alone—"
"Thermal recursion cascade. Third layer. It compensates."
Rohit looked at him. Then at the display. Then back.
"Your sensors are broken."
"I recalibrated them twice."
"So they’re broken twice."
Dhiraj almost smiled. "Run your own diagnostics if you want."
Rohit hesitated for exactly the length of time it took him to decide he did actually want to, then spent the next four minutes running them. Dhiraj drank his coffee. It tasted like hot water had heard a rumor about coffee once and was doing its best.
The diagnostics finished.
Rohit stood up slowly.
"96.4," he said.
"Yes."
"That’s wrong."
"I know."
"I mean that number is not — Dhiraj, nobody is *at* 96.4. Labs with eight-figure budgets are publishing results in the low eighties and declaring it a breakthrough."
"I know."
Rohit put the notebook down very carefully, the way you put something down when you’re not sure it’s safe to hold. "Where did you get this design?"
The question Dhiraj had been waiting for.
He’d run through three versions of an answer while he worked through the night, and all three versions had the same problem: they were either true or believable, and none of them managed to be both at once.
"I’ve been working on it for a while," he said.
"That is not an explanation."
"It’s what I have."
Rohit looked at him for a long moment. Then at the prototype. Then back, with the resigned expression of someone who has known a person long enough to recognize when pushing further is going to produce nothing useful.
"Okay," he said. "Fine. I’ll accept the mystery for now. But you understand that if this is real—"
"It’s real."
"—then you’ve built something that a lot of very powerful people are going to have extremely strong opinions about."
Dhiraj picked up his coffee.
"I’m aware."
"You sound like you’re not worried about that."
"I’m very worried about that."
"You sound like you’re not."
"That’s just my face."
Rohit exhaled. "Your face is genuinely alarming."

They were still there when Kulkarni arrived.
Professor Sandeep Kulkarni. Electrical systems specialist, mid-fifties, a man who had published important work twenty years ago and had spent the following two decades defending it against anyone who suggested the field might have moved on. He walked in with two department staff members, doing the rounds on unauthorized workshop usage — the administration had apparently decided this month to enforce rules it had been ignoring since the previous administration had introduced them.
He noticed Dhiraj immediately.
Of course he did.
"You still have authorization here?"
"Temporary clearance. Active until the end of the month."
Kulkarni’s gaze moved past him to the workstation, the notebook, the edges of the prototype barely visible beneath the fabrication cloth.
"What are you building."
"Battery research."
The professor made a sound that managed to convey both acknowledgment and dismissal in a single syllable. He stepped closer anyway — not from interest, Dhiraj thought, but from the professional instinct of a man who had learned that students left to their own devices in fabrication rooms tended to damage things that cost more than they could pay for.
He picked up the notebook.
Scanned the first page.
Turned to the second.
The staff members drifted toward the shelving along the far wall, leaving Kulkarni standing alone over the workstation with the notebook open, and for a moment — just a moment — something crossed his face that wasn’t dismissal.
It was the look of a person who recognized something they weren’t prepared to recognize.
Then it was gone.
"Where did you copy this from."
Not a question. An assumption stated as fact, with the full weight of institutional certainty behind it — the kind of certainty that stops needing to prove itself because it has been right often enough that the habit has calcified.
Dhiraj kept his voice even. "I designed it."
"No."
Just that. One word. Flat, final, delivered without cruelty because it didn’t require cruelty — it was simply what Kulkarni believed, and what Kulkarni believed had the structural permanence of a load-bearing wall.
The professor set the notebook down.
"You are a competent student," he said, in the tone of someone offering the most generous interpretation they could manage. "You should pursue competent opportunities. These." He gestured vaguely at the workstation. "These are distractions."
He turned and walked toward the exit, staff members falling into step behind him.
At the doorway he paused without turning around.
"Do not damage university property."
Then he was gone.
The ceiling fan kept turning. The pipe somewhere outside kept dripping. Rohit stood very still beside the workstation with the particular silence of someone choosing not to say the first thing that had come to mind.
After a moment, he said: "He really hates optimism."
Dhiraj picked up the notebook.
Looked at the equations.
Kulkarni had held this page for nearly thirty seconds. Had read it carefully enough that his expression had changed. Had set it down and said *you copied this* anyway — not because he thought Dhiraj had cheated, but because the alternative required him to believe something his entire professional framework was not built to accommodate.
*You copied this* was easier. *You copied this* kept everything in order.
Dhiraj looked at the prototype display.
96.4%.
Still there. Still real. Completely indifferent to what anyone believed about it.
> DISCHARGE TESTING REQUIRED.
> OBJECTIVE COMPLETION: PENDING.
He pulled up the monitoring software and started configuring the discharge parameters.
Because Kulkarni was wrong, and the number was right, and the fastest way to make something undeniable was to make it impossible to look away from.
But as he worked, one thought sat in the back of his mind like a screw rolling back and forth near the edge of a table — small, quiet, persistent.
Kulkarni had read the page. Had recognized something. Had chosen not to believe it.
If a professor who’d spent thirty years in electrical systems could look at this design and decide *impossible* before he finished reading the second decimal point —
What would a corporation do?
What would a government do?
What would someone do who had the resources to do something about it?
The workshop was quiet around him. Rohit had pulled up a stool and was watching the discharge test begin, saying nothing, which was unusual enough that Dhiraj noticed it.
Outside, Nagpur moved through its morning. Students in corridors. Buses in flooded streets. A city of several million people running on an electrical grid that most infrastructure engineers preferred not to think about too hard after about the third drink.
The prototype hummed.
The number held.
And somewhere, in an office Dhiraj had never seen, someone was already asking questions about the anomalous power signature that had come out of the university engineering block at 6:14 that morning.
He didn’t know that yet.
He would.
