Chapter 2 — KNOWLEDGE THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

He woke up because his neck gave out.

Forty-three minutes of unconscious compression against the hostel desk, and then his body simply filed a complaint and refused to continue. Dhiraj surfaced with his face peeling off the notebook, a dried smear of blood near his eyebrow, and a neck that had apparently decided to protest everything that had happened in the last six hours.

5:12 a.m.

The laptop screen had dimmed but not died. A research paper on solid-state thermal loss sat half-open behind three other tabs and the placement application he’d submitted to a company he couldn’t remember caring about. Rain still moved against the cracked window above his bed. Somewhere in the courtyard below, a pipe had given up and was releasing water in a steady, patient drip that suggested it had been doing this for longer than anyone had noticed.

Next door, somebody was watching interview tutorials at full volume.

The guy had chosen to begin suffering at dawn. Admirable commitment.

Dhiraj sat there for a moment, not moving, running a basic inventory.

Pain: shoulders, right arm, something sharp behind the left eye.

Then the laboratory came back all at once — the surge, the explosion, the smoke, the sphere crossing the room with the unhurried precision of something that had already decided — and he straightened too quickly and immediately paid for it. His right hand was trembling faintly, which he catalogued and set aside. There was a small bandage above his eyebrow that the university medical room had apparently applied at some point after the security guards.

He didn’t fully remember that part.

"Okay," he said to the empty room. "Concussion. Chemical exposure. Severe sleep deprivation. All three at once."

A pause.

"Working theory: I’m hallucinating everything from approximately eleven forty-five onward."

Nothing answered him. Just the pipe dripping outside and the HR tutorial murmuring through the wall.

Dhiraj pushed himself up and walked to the bathroom mirror.

Same face. Dark circles deep enough to be geological features. Hair doing something structurally unsound. Half-dead expression that had become his default setting sometime during third year. He looked like a person who had recently been thrown into a metal cabinet by a shockwave, which was accurate.

His eyes drifted to the exposed wiring near the mirror light.

Something happened.

Not thought, exactly. More like recognition — the way you identify a familiar face before you consciously remember the name. Heat degradation near the terminal. Uneven current distribution. The replacement wire running thinner than the original spec, dropping conductivity enough to explain the intermittent flickering the hostel had been logging maintenance complaints about for eight months.

He knew this the way he knew his own phone number.

He had not known it yesterday.

Dhiraj looked away from the wiring. Then back. Same result, arriving at the same speed, with the same effortless completeness. Like a calculation that had already finished running before he thought to ask for it.

He returned to the desk slowly, stepping over the clothes pile he’d been meaning to wash since Tuesday. His prototype notes were spread across every surface under empty cups and a loose resistor he’d been using as a paperweight.

He picked up the notebook without really deciding to.

The mistakes hit him so fast it was almost insulting.

Not small errors — foundational ones. The electron compression modeling was wrong from the third page. The stabilization architecture had an inefficiency that branched through every subsequent calculation like a crack through load-bearing concrete. He’d been building on a flawed assumption so basic he hadn’t thought to question it, and now it was obvious, and the obvious solution was already assembling itself in his head before he’d finished recognizing the problem.

He grabbed a pen.

His hand moved faster than felt normal.

Layered conductive alignment. Field-balanced storage channels. Thermal recursion stabilization through a cascade architecture he didn’t have a name for but understood completely, the way you understand a word in your own language — not as a translation, just as a thing that means what it means.

Some of the terminology didn’t exist in any paper he’d read.

Some of it shouldn’t have been possible.

All of it followed actual physics, extended forward by decades along the same trajectory humanity was already on — not magic, not arbitrary, just further. The way a 1970s engineer might look at a modern microchip and recognize every underlying principle while being unable to build one.

Six pages. He stopped when his hand cramped.

He stared at what he’d written.

A cold weight settled in below his sternum, slow and specific, the way dread arrives when it’s actually earned.

This was not inspiration. This was not his subconscious solving problems while he slept.

This was knowledge that had not been there yesterday and was there now.

Dhiraj did not drop the pen. He came close.

The voice existed inside his skull again — the same register as last night, calm and mechanical and ancient in a way he still couldn’t explain and had mostly stopped trying to. He looked around the room anyway, a reflex he recognized as irrational while doing it.

"What are you?"

"That’s a name. I asked what you are."

A pause that felt less like processing and more like the System deciding how much the question was worth.

Dhiraj exhaled through his nose.

"So even the explanation is locked behind a paywall."

> HOST ACCESS LEVEL INSUFFICIENT.

"Right." He set the pen down carefully. "Cosmic technology, bureaucratic access controls. Extremely reassuring."

The System did not register this as worth responding to.

He leaned back in the chair and looked at the ceiling, where a water stain had been slowly expanding since November in the shape of something that might have been a continent. His pulse had settled but not fully. Underneath the unease, something else had been growing since he’d looked at the wiring near the mirror — something he didn’t particularly want to name because naming it felt premature.

But the equations in the notebook were real.

He knew enough to see that immediately. The graphene-dense architecture built on experimental limits that modern researchers had only recently begun approaching from the outside. The thermal recursion system solved a problem the field had been working around for fifteen years rather than through.

If even a working prototype was possible —

Battery density. Charging cycles. Thermal stability. Grid storage. EV infrastructure. AI data centers running on power budgets that currently made them economically insane. Every downstream dependency of energy storage cascading outward until the implications became genuinely difficult to hold in his head all at once.

The headache started around there.

"I know."

"Meaning my brain is the limiting factor."

> AFFIRMATIVE.

"Appreciate the honesty," he said. "Hate the implication."

His phone buzzed across the desk. He looked at the screen for a moment before answering.

"Hello?"

"Did you sleep?" his mother asked. No preamble. Straight to interrogation, same as always.

"A little."

"You sound terrible."

"I’m okay."

"Dhiraj." A pause weighted with the specific exhaustion of someone who has heard *I’m okay* too many times and knows exactly what it costs. "You always say that."

He glanced at the bandage in the mirror.

"I stayed late in the lab."

"You finished engineering," she said. "Other students are preparing properly. You keep doing experiments."

*Because the jobs pay barely enough to survive here. Because half the companies at placement season treat engineers like interchangeable components. Because I don’t want this to be the whole story.*

He didn’t say any of it.

"I’m applying," he said.

Then came the word. It always came.

*Stability.*

She talked about loan payments and relatives asking questions and a neighbor’s son who had joined a multinational with a good package, and Dhiraj listened and looked at the notebook and felt the particular guilt of someone who understood the fear completely and couldn’t make himself stop anyway.

Because he did understand it. That was the difficult part. One medical emergency, one bad month, and everything became genuinely hard. He’d watched the math of his family’s finances for years with the involuntary attention of someone who couldn’t afford not to. He knew exactly why *stability* wasn’t just a preference — it was a survival calculation.

Which made not pursuing it feel like a choice he was making for other people without their consent.

After the call ended, the room felt very quiet.

Rain against the window. The pipe dripping. The HR tutorial through the wall moving on to question four.

Dhiraj looked at the notebook.

The System appeared again without prompting — a translucent interface, minimal and clean and utterly unlike anything designed for human eyes, hanging briefly across his vision before it stabilized.

He studied it.

The objective was physical. Not theoretical. Not a paper, not a model — a working prototype, built in the real world from real materials with real constraints. The System wasn’t asking him to think about this.

It was asking him to build it.

He looked around the hostel room. Peeling paint at the ceiling corner. Desk wobbling on one uneven leg. Laptop fan audible from across the room. The prototype notes spread everywhere, already partially obsolete.

The contrast was difficult to take seriously.

He cross-referenced the architecture against three open research databases anyway, running the comparisons methodically, and ten minutes later his expression had changed in a way he didn’t consciously notice.

The design was logical.

Absurdly advanced, yes. Years beyond current implementation. But it followed the same physics humanity already understood, extended forward along a trajectory that was already moving in this direction. Not a leap into the impossible — a path someone had walked much further down.

Which meant it could be done.

Which meant it was going to cost money he didn’t have, require materials he couldn’t currently access, and depend on manufacturing capabilities that didn’t exist in a hostel room with a wobbling desk.

But it could be done.

That realization sat in his chest alongside something that didn’t feel like hope exactly — more like the moment before hope, the structural recognition that the thing is possible before you’ve decided whether to try.

Then the vision from the laboratory returned.

Not all of it. Just the end of it — the part after the megastructures. The part after the artificial worlds and the civilizations so vast they barely registered as the same category of thing as humanity.

The ruins.

Dead stars. Broken megastructures drifting through space with the silence of things that had stopped moving a very long time ago. Not damaged — ended. Civilizations that had reached the point of building around stars and had then simply ceased to exist, thoroughly enough that what remained was just wreckage and silence.

His fingers stopped on the keyboard.

"What happened to them?"

The System was quiet long enough that he wondered if the question was going to be blocked the same way the others had been.

Then:

> CIVILIZATION TERMINATION EVENT DETECTED.

> DATA CORRUPTED.

Corrupted.

He sat with that for a moment.

These were civilizations that had engineered megastructures spanning solar systems. They had solved problems humanity hadn’t even properly identified yet. And something had removed them so completely that the only record left was corrupted data inside a system old enough that he couldn’t begin to estimate its age.

Something had ended civilizations capable of stellar engineering.

And now their technology was inside his head, in a hostel room in Nagpur, while outside the window a city of several million people moved through its morning completely unaware that the power grid it depended on was already running at margins that made most infrastructure engineers quietly uncomfortable when they thought about it too hard.

Students in corridors. Traffic in flooded streets. His mother on a call about stability. The neighbor’s son and his good package.

The world, continuing normally.

Dhiraj opened a fresh page in the notebook.

He wrote one line at the top.

*What killed the ones who came before us?*

Then he put the pen down and started redesigning the prototype from the beginning.

Because whatever the answer was — it was coming.

And humanity was nowhere near ready.
