Chapter 7 — MANUFACTURING BOTTLENECK
The problem wasn’t theoretical anymore.
Dhiraj had known this since 6:40 that morning, when he’d run the third alignment test on the conductive layering and gotten the same result each time — 0.8 micron deviation, consistent as a broken promise, completely indifferent to how carefully he’d adjusted the arm.
He stood back from the microscope and looked at the fabrication table.
The workshop was empty this early. That was why he used it at this hour — the particular quality of silence that existed before students arrived and filled it with noise and questions and the specific social obligation of having to explain what he was doing. The ceiling tube light buzzed overhead with the same frequency it had buzzed at every morning this week, the kind of sound that stopped registering after twenty minutes and came back after forty.
He adjusted the alignment arm again.
0.8 microns.
The number didn’t move.
He let go of the adjustment wheel before he broke it.
> HUMAN INDUSTRIAL PRECISION CAPABILITY: INSUFFICIENT FOR ADVANCED PATHWAY SCALING.
"I noticed," Dhiraj said, quietly enough that the workshop assistant at the far end of the room didn’t look up.
The System said nothing further. It had a habit of delivering accurate observations at the exact moment they were least useful, then going silent while he worked out the implications.
He appreciated the efficiency, in a way that contained very little actual appreciation.
Because the System was right, and that was the problem.

The battery architecture wasn’t failing. That was almost worse.
It was working at exactly the limits of what this equipment could reliably produce — which meant every measurement Dhiraj took now showed him not how far he’d come, but how much further the design wanted to go and couldn’t, not here, not with tools that had been calibrated sometime before he’d started his undergraduate degree.
He understood the shape of the bottleneck clearly now. Not energy theory. Not materials science. The limiting factor was fabrication precision — the gap between what the design required and what human industrial systems could consistently deliver at any scale that wasn’t catastrophically expensive.
The realization had arrived sometime around three in the morning, when he’d been staring at the ceiling of his hostel room and his brain had decided sleep was less important than the manufacturing tolerance problem.
He’d gotten up and written four pages of notes instead.
The notes were now spread across the workstation in an order that made sense to him and would have looked like debris to anyone else.
> RECOMMENDED PRIORITY: MANUFACTURING INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT.
"With what?" he said under his breath.
The System did not answer that particular question.

He was rechecking the thermal variance data when Kulkarni arrived.
The professor appeared at the workshop entrance the way he always did — unhurried, hands behind his back, with the particular patience of a man who had learned that waiting was more effective than announcing. He stood there long enough that Dhiraj registered him in his peripheral vision before he said anything.
Dhiraj kept working.
"You’ve been spending unusual amounts of time here," Kulkarni said.
"Research."
"You graduated."
"Yes."
The professor walked in slowly. His gaze moved across the workstation — the notes, the partially assembled housing, the microscope still showing the number Dhiraj had been arguing with all morning.
"Energy systems," Kulkarni said. Not a question.
"Trying to solve a manufacturing precision problem."
That was true enough to say without being enough to matter.
Kulkarni stopped beside the workstation. He had the careful stillness of someone who was reading the room before he decided what to do with what he found.
"Your academic record was inconsistent," he said.
Dhiraj almost smiled.
There it was. The engineering student formula — deviate from the placement track and suddenly inconsistent was the word everyone reached for, like it was neutral, like it wasn’t a judgment dressed in neutral clothes.
"Strong analytical capability," Kulkarni continued. "Poor institutional discipline."
"That’s one way to describe it."
"What’s another?"
Dhiraj looked up from the workstation. "That institutional discipline here mostly means optimizing for placement statistics."
A workshop assistant dropped something metal somewhere behind them. The sound rang off the walls and died.
Kulkarni studied him for a moment.
"You genuinely believe you’re building something important."
The flatness of it was what landed. Not hostile. Not dismissive. Something more careful than either.
Dhiraj chose his words with the precision he’d been applying to alignment tolerances all morning.
"I think the energy infrastructure problem is going to become serious faster than most people expect."
For a few seconds the professor said nothing.
Then, unexpectedly: "You’re not wrong."
That was the sentence Dhiraj hadn’t been ready for.
Kulkarni stepped closer to the workstation. Looked at the exposed conductive layers with the attention of someone who was actually reading them, not performing skepticism.
"Global power demand growth is already outpacing grid development in most major markets," he said quietly. "Computational demand alone is going to require a category of storage that doesn’t currently exist at the scale needed."
He said it the way someone said a thing they’d been saying for years to people who kept nodding and then doing nothing.
Dhiraj looked at him.
"You worked in industry before academia."
"Seven years."
Which explained the realism. The specific exhaustion underneath the skepticism. The difference between a man who had read about infrastructure problems and a man who had watched them become disasters in slow motion from close enough to smell them.
Kulkarni looked at the prototype housing.
"What efficiency target are you working toward?"
Dhiraj hesitated for half a second — one beat too long.
"Meaningful improvement over current benchmarks."
The professor noticed the hesitation. Dhiraj could see it — the slight recalibration behind his eyes, the adjustment of a hypothesis.
Not enough to push on. Enough to remember.
Kulkarni stepped back.
"Be careful about obsession," he said. The way he said it sounded less like academic advice and more like something he’d arrived at personally, from a direction he hadn’t enjoyed traveling.
Then he left.
Dhiraj watched him disappear down the corridor. Outside, two students argued about something involving lab records and a third party who wasn’t there to defend themselves.
He turned back to the workstation.
The interaction had left something behind — a low-level unease that was harder to set aside than outright hostility would have been. Hostility was easy to categorize. Genuine intelligence paying genuine attention was a different problem entirely.
> OBSERVATION: PROFESSOR SANDEEP KULKARNI — SYSTEMIC ANALYSIS CAPABILITY ABOVE AVERAGE. PATTERN RECOGNITION PROBABILITY: ELEVATED.
"He’s a professor at a university that can’t fix its own ceiling lights," Dhiraj said. "How elevated are we talking."
> SUFFICIENT TO BE RELEVANT.
He sat with that for a moment.
Then his phone buzzed on the workstation beside him.
Unknown number.
He let it ring.
It rang again immediately.
He answered.
"Dhiraj Wagh?"
Female voice. Professional in the specific way that came from training rather than personality — the smoothed-down cadence of someone who spoke to engineers and executives and adapted the same sentences for both.
"Yes."
"This is Priya Nair, from Voltaris Dynamics. Recruitment division." A half-beat pause. "We received your profile through university placement coordination."
Of course they had. Normal process. Completely normal. He was still a recent graduate on a database somewhere, available for contact by any corporation that paid for access to it.
He looked at the prototype housing.
"We noticed your listed research interests in energy systems engineering," she continued. "We’re conducting technical evaluations for advanced infrastructure candidates next week. Your profile was flagged for consideration."
"I’m not part of any official research program."
"That’s fine. We’re primarily evaluating problem-solving capability. Applied systems thinking. Energy scalability modeling."
Not graduate placement language.
Not even close.
"Who flagged my profile?" Dhiraj asked.
A brief pause. Shorter than it should have been.
"Professor Kulkarni submitted a recommendation."
The workshop kept moving around him — the distant hiss of a compressor, the ceiling fan making its uneven clicking noise, a student near the entrance asking someone about printer access. All of it continuing normally, indifferent to the fact that Dhiraj had just watched the last forty minutes rearrange themselves into a different shape.
Kulkarni had come in before the call.
Had looked at the workstation. Had asked about efficiency targets. Had noticed the hesitation.
And had already moved.
Not maliciously, probably. The professor had spent seven years in industry. He recognized the shape of something real when it was in front of him — and people who recognized real things had habits about what they did next.
"Mr. Wagh?"
"I’ll consider it," Dhiraj said. "Send the details."
The call ended.
He set the phone down on the workstation carefully, the way you set something down when you’re not sure how fragile it is.
Outside, humidity was building toward the afternoon — the particular weight of Nagpur heat that arrived by noon and made the workshop feel like the inside of something that had been sealed too long. The ventilation system moved air around without cooling anything. A generator somewhere on the street kicked on with a sound like a vehicle reconsidering a decision.
Dhiraj looked at the prototype.
Then at the notebook.
Then at the phone.
The battery had worked. The numbers were real. And real things with implications this size didn’t stay contained inside university workshops — they moved outward along the paths of least resistance, which in this case meant placement databases, faculty recommendations, and the recruitment divisions of energy corporations that had been trying to solve the storage problem for longer than he’d been an engineer.
He’d been thinking about all of this as a physics problem.
It was also a people problem now.
Those were harder.
He opened the notebook to a fresh page and wrote one line across the top.
*Voltaris knows my name. Find out what they actually want before they find out what I actually have.*
Then he put the pen down and returned to the alignment tests.
Because the manufacturing bottleneck was still real, and it still needed solving, and the fact that a corporation had just entered the picture didn’t change the physics.
It just changed the timeline.
Outside, the city moved through its afternoon the way it always did — indifferent, enormous, running on infrastructure that was already straining at its margins in ways that most of the people depending on it had agreed not to think about.
And somewhere in a corporate office Dhiraj had never seen, his name sat in a database next to a flag that read: *advanced candidate — priority follow-up.*
He didn’t know what that meant yet.
He would.
