Chapter 6 — FIRST CALCULATION OF VALUE

That was the part Dhiraj couldn’t stop thinking about.

Not the visits — those he could explain. Department rounds. Faculty corridors. A professor with reasons to walk past the workshop that had nothing to do with a student’s prototype and everything to do with the ordinary geography of a working day. He’d catalogued both sightings with the methodical attention of someone who had learned, recently and abruptly, that details were not decoration.

First sighting: 2:14 p.m. Kulkarni slowed near the lab entrance. Two seconds, maybe three. Eyes toward the workshop door, then away. Nothing you could point to. Nothing you could prove.

Second: 4:40. Two faculty members talking near the window. Kulkarni on the far side, half-turned, the angle of his gaze drifting inward while his mouth kept moving about something else entirely.

Two visits. No mention of the notebook. No mention of the workshop. No mention of 96.4%.

Dhiraj had spent enough time studying failure modes to know that silence was sometimes the loudest signal in the room.

He started dismantling the visible components at five.

Not dramatically. Methodically, the way you broke down equipment after a long day — wires first, then the stabilization housing, then the monitoring rig. Systematic and unhurried. Anyone walking past the window would have seen a graduate student cleaning up, which was accurate, and not understood what was being cleaned up or why, which was the point.

A student from the materials lab paused in the doorway.

"Finally fixing it?"

"Trying to stop it from exploding again."

"Fair enough." The guy kept walking.

The more sensitive components went into plastic containers he’d bought near the campus gate for two hundred rupees each — cheap enough to be invisible, sealed tight enough to survive a backpack. The battery core at the bottom, wrapped in thermal shielding, under the folded sweatshirt that had been living in his bag since Tuesday.

He checked the zipper without thinking about it.

Then noticed he’d checked it, which was worse.

Mumbai in the rain at six in the evening was less a city than a system in active negotiation with itself.

Auto-rickshaws forced through gaps that should not have accommodated them. A bus leaned into a divider with the confidence of a vehicle that had been doing this for fifteen years and had not been wrong yet. Somewhere to his left, a man held a horn down continuously for reasons that remained unclear and possibly philosophical.

Dhiraj crossed the road in two careful stages and stopped thinking about it.

The problem was that he couldn’t stop seeing infrastructure anymore.

That was new. Two weeks ago he would have walked this stretch without registering anything beyond traffic and the location of dry pavement. Now he looked at transformer boxes and saw current distribution problems. He looked at signal timing and saw inefficiencies that had probably been there since the system was installed. He looked at the battery backup advertisement pasted across a cracked underpass wall — *Never Lose Power Again!* in large optimistic font above a model holding a tablet — and felt something adjacent to pity.

The city kept moving around him. Patching itself together. Making it work.

Civilization’s oldest habit.

His phone vibrated.

"You always answer like I’m delivering a diagnosis," Rohit said.

"I’m in traffic. It could go either way."

Rohit laughed — loud enough that Dhiraj shifted the phone from his ear. Then: "Voltaris Dynamics."

The name surfaced from somewhere in his recent reading. Large-scale energy infrastructure. Industrial battery systems. Government grid contracts across four states.

"What about them?"

"They’re on the placement seminar sponsor list. Visiting next week. Apparently scouting research hires too, not just placement candidates."

Dhiraj navigated around a pothole full of brown water.

"I’m not showing them the prototype."

"I didn’t say show them anything."

"You implied it."

"I implied you should stop treating a civilization-altering battery like a second-year project you’re embarrassed about."

He didn’t answer immediately. A traffic signal blinked twice in sequence and then shut off entirely, donating its responsibilities to chaos.

"It’s too early," he said.

"For what?"

"For any of it."

Rohit made a sound that conveyed disagreement without committing to an argument. Then someone on his end started talking loudly about placement coordinators, and the call degraded into background noise, and Dhiraj ended it outside a tea stall on the corner of a street whose name he didn’t know.

The rain had intensified without announcing itself.

He ducked under the plastic awning and stood there while water hammered the loose sheet overhead. Steam rose from dented steel kettles. The vendor was a compact man in his sixties with the economical movements of someone who had been making tea in the same spot for long enough that efficiency had become instinct.

Two office workers beside Dhiraj were talking about the signal delays on the Western line and the second power fluctuation this week and a UPI terminal at their building that had been rebooting itself every four minutes since Thursday.

Nobody reacted with surprise.

Nobody expected it to be fixed.

The vendor handed Dhiraj a paper cup without being asked. Steam curled off the surface.

"Late work?"

"Yes."

"Engineering?"

"Yes."

The man smiled in the way of someone who had been hearing variations of this answer for years. "Half of Mumbai is engineering something."

Dhiraj looked out at the street. At the traffic moving through reflected light across standing water. At the signal that had given up. At the battery backup advertisement, still optimistic above the underpass.

True. Also the problem.

Everyone was patching. Optimizing. Extending the life of systems designed for a different scale of civilization and quietly hoping nothing failed faster than it could be fixed.

He drank the tea. It was too sweet and too hot and genuinely good.

Back in the hostel room, the corridor tube lights were running at approximately seventy percent of their intended brightness and flickering every eight seconds with the persistence of infrastructure that had been told it would be replaced soon and had stopped believing it.

His room was quiet.

He unpacked the prototype carefully and set it on the desk beside an unopened packet of instant noodles and a charging cable that had been living in a loose tangle since he couldn’t remember when. The blue glow came up slowly as the system initialized — soft and even, reflecting faintly off the wall.

Still stable.

He opened his laptop and started pulling Voltaris Dynamics apart.

Annual reports first. Then infrastructure contracts. Patent filings. Acquisition history. Court records from two battery IP disputes in 2022 that had been settled quietly enough to almost disappear.

By nine-thirty the picture was clear enough.

Publicly, they looked confident. Aggressively optimistic in the specific way of companies whose investor communications are written by people whose entire job is to sound confident. Underneath that, the limits were obvious once you knew where to look. Energy storage bottlenecks were slowing expansion everywhere. AI server demand was climbing faster than grid infrastructure could support at current growth rates. Government contracts were getting harder to win because the technology they were offering wasn’t improving fast enough.

They weren’t failing. They were stuck.

Which was different, and in some ways worse.

He sat with that for a while.

Then, for the first time, he tried to calculate what the prototype was actually worth.

Not in terms of what someone might offer him. In terms of what it touched.

He started with transportation. Moved to grid storage. Added AI compute infrastructure, where power costs were becoming the primary limit on how large data centers could economically grow. Consumer electronics downstream. Manufacturing cost implications from there. Military applications he didn’t want to think about but couldn’t honestly exclude.

The number became uncomfortable around the third industry.

By the fifth, he stopped calculating and sat back.

The chair made its usual sound.

The battery wasn’t the leverage. That was the thought that had been assembling itself since the tea stall, since the vendor’s offhand observation, since looking at the city’s patched-together infrastructure and finally seeing it clearly.

The battery was the proof.

Manufacturing was the leverage.

A finished product could be reverse-engineered eventually. Given enough time, enough resources, enough researchers working backward from a physical object — yes. But the layering geometries. The thermal recursion tolerances. The conductive alignment methods. The fabrication precision required to replicate this at scale, consistently, without access to the underlying framework that made it possible —

Those were harder to steal.

The System had positioned that pathway one decision away.

Of course it had.

It wasn’t guiding research anymore.

It was thinking in ecosystems. Infrastructure before automation. Manufacturing before scaling. Foundations before anything that depended on them. The pathway architecture made sense in a way that felt less like assistance and more like something that had done this before — had watched civilizations try to skip steps and had learned, from the ruins they left behind, exactly which steps couldn’t be skipped.

That thought sat in his chest in a specific way.

He selected Nano-Scale Layer Alignment. Fifty TP.

The effect was immediate and ungentle.

Pressure slammed behind his eyes hard enough that his hand went to the desk before he consciously decided to reach for it. The chair tilted back a few degrees and he let it, gripping the desk edge while the knowledge came through in a compressed rush that his brain had apparently not been entirely prepared for despite having done this before.

Material alignment tolerances. Microscopic conductive layering. Industrial calibration systems. Fabrication precision methods that didn’t exist in any paper he’d read, built on physics he’d understood for years, extended forward along trajectories that were already moving in this direction — not arbitrary, just further, the way a 1970s semiconductor engineer might recognize every principle in a modern chip fabrication process and still not be able to build one.

Forty seconds, maybe fifty.

Then it stopped.

He stayed still.

Sweat on the back of his neck. Breathing slightly wrong. Somewhere outside, a phone notification was cycling the same alert tone on loop in the room next door with the specific persistence of someone who had left their phone unattended and was not coming back anytime soon.

Dhiraj laughed once, quietly, at nothing in particular.

He had just absorbed precision manufacturing methods beyond modern industrial standards while sitting in a room with peeling ceiling paint, an instant noodle packet he’d been ignoring for six hours, and a charging cable that had given up pretending it had a shape.

The gap between what he knew and where he was had become genuinely difficult to take seriously.

He turned back to the laptop.

The Voltaris Dynamics reports were still open. He looked at them differently now — not at what they had, but at what they were missing. Where the limits were. How long they had before the bottlenecks became impossible to talk around in investor calls.

Not long.

Which meant their timing and his were about to become relevant to each other, whether or not he’d chosen that.

The prototype glowed quietly on the desk.

The city outside ran on its margins and its optimism and its decades of accumulated patches, held together by the collective agreement not to look too hard at the seams.

Dhiraj closed the laptop.

Reached over and turned off the desk lamp.

The prototype’s glow remained — soft blue, even, patient — the only light in the room, throwing faint shadows across the walls in clean geometric lines.

He looked at it for a long moment.

A corporation was coming to campus in a week. A professor had been inside his workspace without asking. Somewhere in the city, in offices he’d never seen, people whose entire job was to notice anomalies were looking at data that didn’t match any registered equipment on campus.

The prototype didn’t know any of this.

It just kept running.

Stable. Consistent. Completely indifferent to the fact that every hour it operated was an hour closer to the moment someone understood what it actually was — and arrived at the conclusion that doing nothing about it was not an option.

Dhiraj had spent four days thinking about the technology.

He was going to have to start thinking about the people.

*That* was the harder problem.

And unlike the battery, it didn’t have a clean solution sitting one pathway away.
