Chapter 5 — TECHNOLOGY POINTS
He did not sleep.
Not because he couldn’t — his body had filed that request around two in the morning with increasing urgency — but because every time he got close, his brain started rebuilding the thermal architecture from scratch and he’d find himself reaching for the notebook before he was fully conscious of having moved.
By 4:37 a.m., the third revision of the compression geometry was spread across six pages, his handwriting deteriorating steadily from the top of each sheet to the bottom. One full line had migrated diagonally into the margin. He noticed it, left it there, kept going.
Outside the hostel window, the city kept doing what it did. A generator on the street below coughed itself alive sometime around three. Someone two doors down yelled at a dead charging adapter at three-thirty with the specific fury of a person who had run out of other things to be angry at. A pipe dripped somewhere in the courtyard, patient and rhythmic, indifferent to everything.
The prototype ran through all of it.
Stable output. Consistent thermal regulation. Efficiency degradation after six hours of sustained discharge sitting at 2.1%, which was a number that should not have existed and had the audacity to keep existing anyway.
Dhiraj stared at it.
The design still looked crude to him now. Not wrong — incomplete. Like a rough sketch of something much larger, made by someone who understood the final shape but hadn’t yet found all the lines.
Every successful reading made the gaps more visible.
That was new. A month ago he would have looked at these numbers and felt finished. Now he looked at them and saw manufacturing tolerances that needed tightening, layering geometries that could be pushed further, thermal pathways that were functional but not optimal.
The goalposts hadn’t moved.
His eyes had.

The interface expanded — clean geometric layers unfolding behind his vision in a hierarchy that was immediately, instinctively legible. Some entries carried a faint luminescence. Most were dark.

He studied the structure for a long moment.
It wasn’t random. The pathways connected too cleanly — each technology creating the conditions for the next, infrastructure before scaling, manufacturing before automation, foundations before anything that depended on them. Nothing appeared in isolation.
The System wasn’t handing him breakthroughs.
It was building capability in sequence. Deliberately. Like something that had done this before and knew which shortcuts caused problems later.
That thought settled in his chest in a way he didn’t entirely like.
"What determines what’s accessible?" he asked quietly.
> CIVILIZATION DEVELOPMENT STATUS.
"So there are things humanity can’t have yet."
> AFFIRMATIVE.
Not *you can’t have them.* Humanity. The limitation wasn’t him — it was the entire species, the whole accumulated weight of what seven billion people had and hadn’t built, hadn’t discovered, hadn’t been ready for.
He leaned back in the chair until it hit the wall.
If the System believed civilizations needed controlled technological progression — if something this old had decided that certain knowledge required certain foundations before it could be safely held — there was probably a reason rooted in something he’d seen in that first vision and hadn’t been able to stop thinking about since.
Ruins. Broken megastructures. The silence of things that had been drifting for a very long time.
He turned back to the interface and selected the second pathway.

He stopped on the last entry.
Because that was it — that was the bottleneck he’d been circling around for the past six hours without being able to name it. The battery design wasn’t limited by theory anymore. It was limited by what human industrial systems could physically fabricate. Layer precision. Material purity. Thermal regulation tolerances at scales that current manufacturing either couldn’t reach or couldn’t hold consistently.
Scaling this would become a nightmare long before the design itself failed.
The System had already mapped the problem. Had already positioned the solution one decision away.
Of course it had.
Dhiraj closed the interface and looked at the dark ceiling.
*This thing doesn’t invent technology,* he thought. *It builds ecosystems.*

The knock came at 7:11.
"Open the door before I assume you died."
Rohit walked in with two paper cups of canteen tea and stopped almost immediately.
"You haven’t slept."
"You noticed."
"You look like a printout of a person." He set one of the cups on the desk beside the workstation. "Is this what a breakthrough looks like? Because I was hoping for more celebration and less medical concern."
The tea was already too sweet. It always was — hostel canteen tea operated on the theory that sugar was a substitute for quality, applied at industrial scale.
Dhiraj drank it anyway.
Rohit had lowered himself into the chair beside the desk and was looking at the overnight monitoring data with the particular expression engineers made when a number contradicted something they’d understood to be physically settled. Not disbelief exactly. More like the moment before disbelief, when the brain was still trying to find the error.
"The degradation rate," he said.
"2.1."
"That doesn’t scale normally."
"I know."
"I mean the curve itself—" Rohit pointed at the graph, tracing the line with one finger. "This isn’t a better version of existing systems. This is something that doesn’t behave like existing systems." He looked up. "You understand what that means for storage infrastructure."
"Yes."
"EV charging cycles. Grid backup. Data center power budgets." Rohit’s voice had shifted from concerned to something quieter, more careful, the way it did when he was doing arithmetic he hadn’t asked to do. "The AI compute problem alone—"
"I know."
"Dhiraj." He set the cup down. "Companies spend decades not reaching this."
"I know."
"You keep saying that."
"Because it keeps being true."
Rohit was quiet for a moment. Outside, the city was accelerating into morning — traffic building on the flooded streets below, a bus horn sustaining itself longer than seemed necessary, the generator on the street coughing again with the reliability of something that had decided to be consistent at exactly one thing.
"So what’s the plan?" Rohit asked.
"I don’t know yet."
"Patent it."
"Without manufacturing infrastructure?"
"Investors."
Dhiraj looked at him.
Rohit sighed. "Right. The fake innovation culture thing."
"It’s not a thing. It’s an accurate description of a broken system."
"It sounds like something someone posts before becoming a billionaire."
"That’s not a compliment."
"It wasn’t entirely an insult either." Rohit turned the cup in his hands. "You’re really going through with this."
It wasn’t a question. His voice had the particular flatness of someone processing a conclusion they’d already reached but hadn’t wanted to say out loud.
Dhiraj didn’t answer immediately.
Because the honest version covered territory he hadn’t fully mapped yet — pathways extending beyond the battery, beyond anything he could currently build, toward things that didn’t have names in any paper he’d ever read. He’d spent part of the night staring at locked entries in the System interface and feeling the specific vertigo of a person standing at the edge of something with no visible bottom.
"Yes," he said.
Rohit nodded slowly.
Then: "You know what actually unsettles me?"
"Probably several things."
"You talk like someone who made the decision before anyone else knew there was a decision to make." He looked up. "The moment that prototype succeeded — something changed in you. I could see it. You went somewhere internal and haven’t fully come back."
That landed harder than Dhiraj expected.
He picked up the pen. Set it back down.
"You keep doing that," Rohit said.
"Doing what."
"That." He gestured vaguely toward Dhiraj’s face. "Half a second. Like you’re reading something nobody else can see."
Dhiraj changed the subject with the economy of someone who had decided the conversation was heading somewhere inconvenient.
"I need workshop access today."
Rohit stared at him for a moment longer than was comfortable.
Then: "Version three."
"Yes."
"Of course." He stood, picked up his cup. "When you eventually become some kind of civilization-altering problem, I want it on record that I brought you tea before it was profitable."
"Noted."
At the door, Rohit paused.
"Just be careful who you show it to."
He said it quietly. Not as a joke. The humor had drained out of his voice somewhere in the previous ten minutes and hadn’t come back.
Then he was gone, and the room was quieter than it had been before he arrived.

By noon, Dhiraj was back in the workshop.
The campus moved normally around him — placement-season formality, students in ironed shirts carrying laptops with cracked screens, the cafeteria argument about startup equity percentages that seemed to be ongoing regardless of which two people were having it. The ordinary texture of a civilization that believed it understood its own situation.
He found the workshop mostly empty. Good.
He set the prototype on the workstation, opened the notebook to the latest revision, and stopped.
Something was wrong.
He stood very still for a moment, not touching anything, just looking.
The papers weren’t arranged the way he’d left them. One page corner had been folded at an angle he didn’t use. His pencil had moved six centimeters to the left of where he kept it. Small adjustments. The kind that suggested someone had been careful, or had thought they were being careful, which was a different thing.
He looked up at the workshop supervisor across the room.
"Someone was here earlier."
The man glanced up from his phone. "Professor came by."
"Which professor."
A shrug. "Electrical department."
Dhiraj’s jaw tightened by a fraction.
He looked back at the notebook.
Nothing missing. No pages gone, nothing obviously photographed, no evidence of anything except the fact of the visit itself — the fact that someone had come here, alone, before he arrived, and had looked at his work carefully enough to disturb the arrangement without realizing they’d done it.
> CAUTION RECOMMENDED.
"I noticed," he said under his breath.
The supervisor glanced over without interest. Returned to his phone.
Dhiraj sat down slowly.
He thought about Kulkarni holding the notebook in the workshop two days ago. Thirty seconds on the second page. The expression that had crossed his face before the professional certainty reasserted itself — the look of a man who had recognized something and needed it to be wrong. *You copied this.* Said with absolute conviction, because the alternative required a framework he hadn’t built.
But recognition was different from dismissal.
You had to see something to dismiss it.
And if Kulkarni had seen enough to come back alone, quietly, before anyone else arrived —
Dhiraj looked at the prototype. At the monitoring display still showing the numbers from last night. At the notebook pages with their new folds and the pencil in the wrong place.
The System had been in his head for four days now. In that time he had rebuilt a battery from theoretical foundations, run a successful discharge test, watched six hours of stable output data, and mapped three technological pathways that extended further than he could currently see the end of.
He had been thinking about all of it as a problem of physics and manufacturing and resources.
He had not been thinking about it as a problem of people.
That was the mistake.
The prototype had worked. The numbers were real. And real things with implications this large did not stay contained to hostel rooms and university workshops. They moved. They attracted attention. They arrived in the awareness of people who had the resources and the motivation to respond to them — and those people rarely responded by doing nothing.
The danger was never the technology failing.
The danger began the moment someone else understood it had succeeded.
He opened the notebook to a fresh page.
Wrote one line.
*Who else has already seen this?*
Then he put the pen down and started building version three.
Because the answer was coming whether he was ready for it or not.
