Chapter 440: Potential, New Ability
Kate felt emotional when she heard Michael’s words. She could feel the sincerity in them, and clearly, with the actions that Michael had been taking, it was clear that he was not lying to her.
At this moment, she felt just how lucky she was. Not every girl out there could find a man who cared so much for her like Michael did.
When she was growing up, being associated with Susan, who was very outgoing, she had heard a lot of gossip. It was not strange to find that in some relationships, it was the lady who was giving, while the man was just receiving while doing nothing.
Some relationships even extended to domestic violence, which was something that she did not like. And in some cases, while two partners might love each other, their financial situation might not allow them to enjoy themselves. In the end, they might end up spending all their lives struggling, just to survive and support their children.
But, it was different for her. Not only was she born in a family that was rich. But, despite experiencing the loss of her father while young, upon growing up, she met Michael.
Not only was he rich, richer than her family, he also introduced her to the other side of the world that she didn’t know about.
If not for him, maybe, he might have rejected the offer to join Nexus. And after that, she might have never become a mutant, not to mention the fact that without Michael’s assistance, she might have been one of those that had died during the mutation serum injection.
By the time that the chaos that she had been informed about erupted, maybe she would be among the first to suffer. According to the standards of ordinary people, she was quite strong.
But in front of the mutants, they are literally no difference between her and the ordinary people. They could all be dealt with the same way.
Meeting Michael, she realized that he was her lucky star. He had enabled her to take revenge on the person that had killed her father.
It was only after she had killed him, and came to know about his background, that she realized that she had taken the wrong path. It was no wonder that nobody within the family ever told her who it was that was involved with the death of her father.
With both the Santos family and the Blood Reapers Syndicate backing him, it would be impossible for her to be able to take him out, no matter how high of a ranking she possessed in the police system.
At least, it would be impossible for her to be able to become the inspector general of the police, holding most of the power of the police force, it would have been impossible for her to deal with him.
Despite how easy it was for Michael to be able to deal with the Blood Reapers Syndicate, she understood that it was because he was more powerful than they were. An ordinary people facing such a force, they did not even need the mutants to take action.
"You really are my lucky charm. If not for you, I don’t know what I would have been doing right now." Kate said in a low voice, as she tightly hugged Michael.
Michael also came back to his senses. He decided to set aside the notification that he had received from the system for now.
So, he began lightly patting Kate’s back as he said, "As long as I live, and you don’t decide to find someone else to snatch your heart, I can promise to do everything that I can to make you happy."
He’s words made Kate’s body shake slightly, as she felt very emotional. At the same time, in her heart, she made a vow that, no matter what, she would always be by his side. Even if he decided to abandon her, she would never give up on him.
The two stayed in that position for a while, before finally, Kate calmed down. Then, as she pushed herself up against Michael’s chest, she said, "We will be leaving in 2 days. We are required to go to the headquarters of NEXUS, so that we can officially join the organization.
I’m not really sure how long it is going to take, but I will come back immediately after everything is taken care of.
But, if you don’t want me to go, just say the word. It doesn’t matter what kind of consequences I will have to face later on, but if you don’t want me to go, I will not."
Michael immediately understood why Kate was mentioning consequences. After all, according to NEXUS, they were the ones who had injected her with the mutation serum.
Therefore, they believed that since they had allowed her to become a mutant, she had to follow the arrangements of the organization. If she decided to leave, there would be consequences for her to face.
As for what the consequences were, even Michael was not sure. That was because until now, nobody had ever left NEXUS on their own accord, or dismissed.
Only those that had been injured during a mission, and were forced to retire, had left the organization. As for those that had committed crimes, breaking the rules of the organization, there was none so far.
At least, there was nobody that was recorded to have fully broken the rules of the organization, that led to big consequences. That was of course, not considering Morrison, who had done so. But even then, the guy could not face punishment from the organization, because he was already dead.
"You know, a relationship is not a prison. You do what you want to do, as long as you are happy. If you get in trouble, I will get you out. And if you don’t want to join the organization, just say the word, and I will make the arrangements for that." Michael responded with a slight smile.
Kate felt much more relieved when she heard this. Even though she was prepared, to leave the organization if Michael wanted her to, she really wanted to stay. Therefore, with Michael telling her that she could stay, she felt relieved.
But at the same time, she felt guilty. It seemed, ever since they got together, they had not really spent that much time together. And coming to the capital, they were supposed to have some fun in this new city.
But with Lina’s appearance, for almost a week now, she had been going out in the morning, coming back in the evening. She realized, she might have neglected him.
Even though she did not say it out loud, she decided, after everything at the organization was taken care of, she would have to ask to be dispatched in the capital. That way, she would be close to Michael, and could spend more time with him.
"Okay, let me go and prepare. Let’s go out in the evening, and spend some time together." Kate said as she stood up.
"Alright. You go ahead." Michael nodded.
He watched as she left, before he finally decided to focus on the notification that he had received from the system.
[Your body has fully adapted to the previous ability. Now, you can acquire another ability by taking the mutation serum.]
It had been over 10 days since the last time that he had taken the mutation serum, and gained the advanced telekinesis ability.
Michael had always been waiting for this notification, and had been kind of getting impatient. The first ability, after he took it, it only took his body a little over a week, before he could take the next mutation serum.
But this time, it took a day more. That was something that left him confused. Even though the system had previously informed him that the time taken would always vary, was this variation not too much?
As he was still puzzled about this, he received yet another notification from the system.
[The speed of the adaptation of the body to the abilities is dependent on the type of mutation serum taken. For some abilities, despite them being grade SSS, facing an ability like grade SSS advanced telekinesis ability, they would lose.]
[It is not just about the ability of one ability to counter the other. Instead, it also concerns the potential and capabilities of an ability.]
Michael finally understood what might have happened. The first ability that he had gotten, the psychic clone ability, it allowed him to be able to create clones.
The physical strength and skills that the original body possessed, the clones would also possess them. Of course, the clones did not have the advanced telekinesis ability, or the rapid adaptation ability.
Still, according to what the system had said, it seemed that the rapid adaptation ability had much more potential than the other two abilities.
The ceiling of the rapid adaptation ability, it was not something that Michael could estimate. But for the other two, there was a maximum number of clones that he could create, and the maximum weight, number and distance that the telekinesis ability could work effectively.
Something that left him a little puzzled was the fact that, the time that his body took to adapt to the rapid adaptation ability was longer than for the advanced telekinesis ability.
That was especially considering that with the rapid adaptation ability, it was supposed to be able to adapt easily when faced with different circumstances.
Regardless, despite the confusion that he had, Michael decided not to focus on that. In any case, it was time for him to gain yet another ability.
As he shifted his thoughts, he began wondering, what ability would he choose? At the thought of this, on the screen in front of him, several abilities appeared.
