They gave him the deepest place on the mountain.

Beneath the Silent Peak, carved into the living rock where Skyedge had weathered tribulations since before Lin Zhen’s grandfather held the seal, lay a breakthrough chamber ringed nine times over in warding arrays.

. Its whole purpose was cruel and simple: when a cultivator broke into a new realm and the heavens came down to test him, the chamber funnelled that judgment onto one man and one man only, so the lightning meant for him did not fall on the sect around him. Mira had wanted exactly this. Somewhere the sky could aim at him and nothing else.

Qingyue came down with him. She’d argued her way past his objection with three flat words - "I’m your witness" - and taken up a place against the far wall with a bundle of talismans and a stillness that told him she’d kept more than one of these vigils before, and not all of them had ended with the cultivator walking out.

"You don’t have to watch this," Xuan said.

"I watched you use up your whole self in a gorge and live. I’ll watch you do the reverse." Her voice held level, but her hands were tight around the talismans. "Open your door, Lin Xuan. I’ll be here when it’s open."

He lowered himself into the centre of the array, folded his legs, laid Marrow Dragon across his knees out of habit more than need, and closed his eyes.

’Talk me through it.’

[ Gladly. ] Mira’s presence spread through him, steadier than he’d ever felt her. [ Here’s where you are, and it’s a stranger place than most. You’ve been standing at the peak of Qi Refining for months with your hand flat on this door, refusing to knock, because the price of knocking was a lightning tribulation and your karma was too high to survive one. ]

’And now it isn’t.’

[ And now it isn’t. Twenty-nine. You bled a hundred and change down to that number handing bread to widows and gutting hoarders and making a magistrate weep, and the heavens read the receipt and decided you’re allowed to live through this. So this is going to hurt like nothing you’ve felt, and it is not going to kill you, provided you do exactly what I say and don’t get clever. ]

’When have I ever.’

[ I’ve started a list. It’s long. ] A beat, and the humour thinned into something close to tenderness. [ For real, host. When it comes down, don’t fight the heavens. You can’t win that fight and nobody ever has. You let it in, you let it burn out what’s rotten, and you hold the core of yourself together while it does. That’s the whole trick. Endure, don’t resist. Ready? ]

He drew one long breath, and let go of the wall he’d held for months.

’Open it.’

He reached for the barrier at the peak of his realm - the membrane he’d spent half a year politely not touching - and he pushed.

It resisted like a frozen river resisting a stone, held, and gave, and everything changed.

His qi, which had spent months coiled tight at the ceiling of Qi Refining with nowhere left to grow, poured through the broken barrier into a space that had not existed a heartbeat before.

His dantian, packed to bursting for so long that fullness had come to feel normal, suddenly had room, and his power rushed to fill it like a held breath finally released, expanding, deepening, changing register into something heavier and purer and vastly more his.

It was ecstasy for exactly three seconds.

Then the meridians the barrier had guarded lit up all at once, and raw qi tore through channels that had never carried this volume, and turned that ecstasy inside out into pain.

He’d been cut, burned, run through the arm two weeks ago. This was worse, because it came from inside, everywhere at once, his own power scouring his own body wider to hold what he was becoming.

[ Breathe through it. This is the realm remaking your body to fit it. It’s supposed to hurt. Guide it, don’t clench. ]

He guided it. Sweat sprang along his spine and his hands shook on the sheath across his knees, and he took the fire coming up out of his dantian and steered it, channel by screaming channel, and did not fight it, and did not clench, and slowly, slowly, the pain resolved into a deep, ringing power that ran through him from crown to heel.

And under it, the last narrow places in him began to give way.

[ Oh, ] Mira breathed, and for once she sounded genuinely moved. [ Xuan. Feel that. Everything’s opening. ]

He felt it. The channels that had spent this body’s whole life running narrow and grudging, even after everything the two of them had already pried loose at the start, were widening under the flood of new power, deepening, smoothing, carrying more than they ever had.

Where the fire passed, the meridians ran broad and whole, remade to the measure of the realm he was climbing into. Room he’d never had. Capacity this body had been denied from birth, poured full at last.

’It’s all opening. Wider than it’s ever gone.’

[ Wider than Qi Refining could ever hold. This is the realm rebuilding you from the channels out to fit what you’re becoming. You’re not just crossing a line, Xuan, you’re getting the body that should have carried you all along. ]

For one soaring beat, Xuan let himself believe the worst was the pain, and the pain was passing, and this was almost done.

Then the temperature in the chamber dropped, and the warding arrays along the walls flared white in warning all at once, and far above the mountain, felt through a hundred feet of solid rock, something vast and electric turned its attention downward and began, without any hurry at all, to gather.

Qingyue was on her feet. "Xuan." Her voice was very steady and very quiet. "The sky just changed."

[ Here it comes. ] Every trace of warmth in Mira went taut and focused. [ The heavens have noticed you’re knocking. Now they answer. Hold on to yourself, Xuan - the tribulation’s here.]
