Chapter 213: The Price and the Prize

The first bolt came without warning or mercy.

It punched down through a hundred feet of rock as though the mountain were paper, found the array, found him, and struck him square through the crown of the skull. There was no sound he could name. The world went white, and every channel he’d just spent an hour opening lit with lightning that wanted to unmake him, and the pain was so total and so pure that some distant part of him noted, with the last of his sarcasm, that being run through with a sword had been a gentle introduction to this.

[ DON’T FIGHT IT. ] Mira’s voice cut through the white. [ Let it in. Let it burn. Hold the core. ]

He let it in.

Every instinct screamed to wall the lightning out, to clench his dantian shut and refuse it, and every instinct was wrong, and he knew it was wrong because she’d told him and because he could feel that the men who clenched were the men who did not walk out of rooms like this. So he unclenched. He opened himself to the thing trying to kill him and let it roar down through his newly-cleared meridians, and it scoured them, and it hurt beyond language, and it left them wider and stronger and more truly open behind it.

The second bolt came before he’d drawn breath from the first.

He held.

The third cracked the outer face of the array and Qingyue moved, slapping a talisman against the failing ward without being asked, her jaw set, her eyes never leaving him, feeding her own qi into the sect’s defences to keep the overspill off the mountain while the heavens spent themselves on the one man they’d come for.

[ That’s three. Straight strikes, top-down, no chaining, no wildfire - your karma bought you a fair fight instead of a slaughter. But fair doesn’t mean gentle. There’s more. Hold the core, Xuan. You’re doing it. ]

The bolts came in a stair, each heavier than the last, and Xuan lost count somewhere past the fifth. He stopped being a man enduring lightning and became a single act of endurance, a will clenched around the one small ember at the centre of himself that was, stubbornly, Lin Xuan, while everything around that ember burned white and holy and merciless. His skin split. His channels sang. His bones felt like struck bells. And through all of it he did not fight, did not wall it out, did not do a single clever thing - he only held, and held, and held.

And the light did not come again.

The chamber rang with its own sudden quiet. The arrays along the walls faded from white to their resting glow. A hundred feet up, the vast electric attention that had bent down over the mountain lifted, lost interest, and was gone, the sky sealing over it like water over a dropped stone.

Xuan knelt in the centre of a scorched array, smoking faintly, skin cracked in a dozen places, and drew a breath all the way to the bottom of a body that no longer had a single closed door in it.

He’d never felt anything like it. Every meridian ran open and clear. The power moving through him was heavier, deeper, quieter, and answered him the instant he thought of it. Every narrow, grudging channel this body had been born with had been rebuilt wide and true by the realm itself. What remained was simply him, whole, for the first time.

Qingyue crossed the chamber, went to her knees in front of him, and pressed both her cold hands flat to his ruined, smoking face. For once there was nothing wintered in her at all.

"You’re through," she said, unsteady. "You impossible man. You’re through."

"Told you I’d open it." His voice came out a wreck. He turned his head just enough to press his cracked lips to her palm, and let himself lean into her hands, and for a breath neither of them was strategist or heir or anything but two people who’d been terrified and were not, now, dead. "Stay there a moment. The room hasn’t stopped spinning."

[ Take your bow later, lovebirds. ] Mira’s voice was thick with something she’d never admit to. [ Because I have got some numbers for you, Xuan, and they are the best numbers I have ever had the pleasure of reading out. ]

A panel unfolded across his vision, brighter and cleaner than it had ever rendered.

BREAKTHROUGH CONFIRMED — FOUNDATION ESTABLISHMENT

Realm: Foundation Establishment — Stage 1

Dantian Capacity: 100%

Qi Reserve: Full, stable, and fully operational.

Withered Meridian Curse: REMOVED.

Meridian Inhibitor: PURGED.

Central Meridian: OPENED at Stage 8.

Qi can now project beyond the blade. Xuan possesses his first true ranged sword-intent attacks.

[ Read that middle line twice, because it changes how you fight forever. ] Mira could barely keep the grin out of her voice. [ Your whole life your qi died at the edge of the steel. Every technique you own stops where the blade stops. Not anymore. That central meridian opening means your intent carries past the metal now. You’ve got range, Xuan. For the first time, you can cut a man who thinks he’s standing safely out of your reach. ]

’Ranged sword-intent.’ He turned it over, and something in him that had spent two lifetimes fighting from a permanent disadvantage went very quiet and very pleased. ’All this time I’ve won by being clever because I had no choice. Now I’ve got reach as well.’

[ Now you’ve got reach as well. And I haven’t even given you the best part. ] The panel shifted.

MILESTONE REWARD — Second Realm Breakthrough +20,000 Origin Points

Origin Points: 44,180

[ Twenty thousand, Xuan, for crossing the threshold. On top of what you’d banked. Forty-four thousand, one hundred and eighty, waiting there to be spent whenever you decide what on. ] Her voice softened out of the ledger and into something rarer. [ You did it. Peak of Qi Refining to Foundation, cripple’s body and all, through a tribulation that would’ve turned a higher-karma man into charcoal, and you walked it because you spent months being decent enough to earn a fair one. I don’t say this often, and I’ll deny it later. I’m proud of you. ]

Xuan let his forehead rest against Qingyue’s, both of them breathing, the scorched array cooling around them, forty-four thousand Origin Points glowing quietly at the corner of a mind that was, at last, whole and unshackled and standing a single step below where he’d always meant to be.

The chamber door ground open at the top of the stairs, and Wei Tianming’s voice came down urgent and out of breath, before he’d even reached the bottom.

"Young master - forgive the intrusion, I know what you’ve just done - but a rider came in under the Third Princess’s own seal, and she isn’t asking. She’s summoning every allied sect to the southern muster by the new moon." A pause, and the part that mattered. "The war’s started. And she’s named you specifically."
