Chapter 107: Predator in the Maid Dress
"Five-minute break!" she calls over her shoulder, sweet and bright, completely at odds with the low, commanding thing her voice was doing thirty seconds ago. "Kebabs will resume shortly!"
One of the mafia guys actually claps, offering slow, respectful applause like he just watched a magic trick.
i look back at the customers and food shack and yell, "we are closed for the day."
The curtain falls shut behind us, and the noise of the stand fades into something distant and irrelevant, and Cherry’s grip on my tail does not loosen even a little.
Cherry doesn’t stick around for the applause. She just turns, hips swaying like she owns the whole alley, and heads for the side alley to the stairs that lead back to her room. I catch a glimpse of it through the doorway, and yeah, she’s actually tidied up in there. Blankets folded. No more granola bar wrappers scattered like confetti; someone’s been busy.
She stops at the door and turns around slowly, biting her lip while she looks me up and down like she’s deciding which part of me to eat first.
I open my mouth to say something smooth, something charming, some classic Matt line to smooth this whole thing over.
[System: do you even have a classic Matt line?]
I’m not listening to you.
"Ok, love," I say, voice dropping low again, "I do not approve of what you just did in front of everyone. You’re only mine, ok?"
"Shut up," she says.
Oh shit.
I close my mouth.
Her eyes are doing something weird. Not the usual soft red puppy-dog thing she’s got going on; these are glowing, actual fire red, like someone lit a candle behind each eyeball.
My brain lags a little just looking at it. Is this even the same Cherry? 2 hours ago she was stammering an apology for existing too loud. Now she’s staring at me like I’m a snack she’s been saving for a special occasion.
"Hmm," she says, tilting her head, still biting that lip. "What do you want me to do?"
That is not a question, god damn, that is a statement wearing a question’s clothes.
My body, traitor that it is, decides this is the perfect time to get fully interested, the kind of interested that is hard to hide when you’re a giant snake with exactly zero pants to adjust.
I’ve never been on this side of things before. Lyra’s intense in her own way, but she lets me lead, lets me set the pace, curls up after like she trusts me to steer. This is different. This is Cherry looking at two meters of scale and muscle like it’s a problem she’s already solved.
"Get in here," she says, and steps back into the room, crooking one finger.
I glide forward before I even decide to. My tail flicks nervously against the doorframe on the way past. She shuts the door behind me with her foot, casual as anything, still holding my stare with those fire-red eyes.
"You completely took over the market," she says, walking a slow circle around me like she’s inspecting livestock.
"Made so many strangers follow you, even made a scene." Her hand trails along my scales as she passes, feather-light, and my whole body shivers under it. "Did you think about me at all?"
"I—"
"Don’t answer that." She’s in front of me again, close now, close enough I can feel the heat coming off her skin. "Wrong answer either way."
She reaches up (she has to reach up; she’s barely over five foot two and I’m looming a solid two meters of snake even coiled) and grabs my tail with both hands like she’s done this a hundred times before. One firm pull, and she’s sitting herself right down on my coils like she’s claiming a throne.
"Cherry, what-?"
"Shh." She pats my scales, absent, like she’s petting a very large, very confused cat. "You don’t get to talk yet."
I glance down at her. Broken horn stumps twitching. Wings folded neat and deliberate instead of the awkward crumple she usually has going on. This isn’t shy-apologise-for-breathing Cherry. This is someone else wearing her face.
"Who even are you right now?" I mutter, because apparently my mouth doesn’t get the memo about staying shut.
She leans in, and her breath is hot against the scales of my throat. "I’m the real one," she whispers. "The other me is broken; this me isn’t."
Well, that’s certainly something.
Somewhere in the back of my head, small and quiet, I think about Lyra. Miss her a little, the steady calm of her, the way she never makes me feel like prey. But she’s not here right now. Cherry is. And Cherry currently has both hands wrapped around my tail like she’s got no plans of letting go anytime soon.
"So," she says, voice gone soft and dangerous all at once, "are you going to behave."
I open my mouth, then close it. This is new territory and I have exactly zero idea how to navigate it, but every inch of my two-meter body is leaning in anyway, curious, wanting, completely on board with finding out.
"Yes ma’am," I manage.
There’s a thrill in the submission, a newness that’s both terrifying and intoxicating me.
Her smile, when it comes, is not the shy little half-smile I know. It’s slow and confident, her fire-red eyes locked on mine as if she already knows exactly what she’s going to do to me and just wants to watch me sweat about it first.
She smiles and it’s slow and wicked, then she leans in, her breath a whisper’s touch against my scales.
"Good." The word lands soft, almost tender, a reward and a leash all at once. Her eyes hold mine a little too long, something flickering behind them that doesn’t match the warmth of her mouth. "Now, sit still for me."
Those words drop into the silence like a stone into still water, soft and deliberate, tender in the way a trap is tender before it closes. Something about the shape of it turns my blood cold, no not the sound. The weight behind it, the sexy ownership.
That’s the part that frightens me.
