Chapter 265: Only Nice to Him Because of Work

Soon, the doctor came out. When Anne Sutton saw who it was, she realized he was a doctor from her own hospital—one she’d even met before.

It was incredibly difficult to get an appointment with this particular doctor.

And yet...

’He was dragged over here after his shift just to treat Nathan Fawcett?’

’Such is the life of a rich young master!’

Anne Sutton waited for the doctor to leave before stepping into Nathan Fawcett’s room.

Nathan Fawcett was lying in bed, looking quite miserable. But the moment he saw Anne Sutton walk in, he perked up immediately, composing his features into a serious expression. "You’re back?"

Ian: "..."

Ian almost suspected that Nathan had been faking his illness all along.

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett. "Not feeling well?"

"A little. It’s nothing. Not like you’d worry about me anyway." After he spoke, he noticed Anne Sutton standing nearby, staring at him with a complicated expression.

Nathan Fawcett looked at her, unable to guess what she was thinking. "What is it?" he asked.

Anne Sutton asked, "Did your mother make you eat it?"

’He hates spicy food. There’s no way he would have eaten it on his own.’

Anne Sutton couldn’t help but recall how Anna Linden would deliberately pressure Nathan.

Nathan Fawcett was taken aback by her question. "What?"

"I heard you ate so much spicy food you made yourself sick!" Anne said. "Can’t you think for yourself for once? Stop doing every single thing your mother tells you to do!"

Seeing him in this state, Anne truly felt worried for him.

Hearing her words, Nathan said, "No, it has nothing to do with her."

He’d actually been afraid of her finding out!

And yet...

She heard he’d eaten spicy food, assumed his mother was behind it, and was actually worried about him!

’She’s actually worried about me!’

Anne Sutton said, "If it wasn’t her, then who else could it be? I’m going to go find her!"

’No one but Anna Linden would pull something like this!’

As Anne was about to leave, Nathan called out anxiously, "Come back!"

’She can’t actually go and confront my mother. She’ll just end up offending her again!’

Nathan quickly stopped her.

He even signaled for Ian to help.

Ian said, "Mama, Papa ate it because he wanted to!"

Hearing this, Anne turned to look at Nathan, finding it hard to believe.

Seeing that Anne had stopped in her tracks, Nathan said, "Come back here."

Anne walked back and stared at him. "What’s going on?"

Nathan rubbed the tip of his nose. "I just felt like eating some, so I had a little too much."

"And I’m supposed to believe you?" Anne didn’t buy his nonsense for a second.

She looked at Nathan. "Knowing you, why would you ever eat spicy food?"

"I was just trying to learn, wasn’t I? So you wouldn’t say I can’t handle spicy food next time!" Nathan glanced at Anne. "But man, it was really spicy! Tasted awful."

"Are you a fucking idiot?"

Anne couldn’t believe him!

The curse just slipped out!

Beside them, Ian piped up, mimicking, "Fucking idiot!"

Anne Sutton: "..."

Nathan Fawcett: "..."

Nathan shot him a glare. "Go on, get out!"

’I can’t deal with this kid for another second!’

’All he does is piss off his own father!’

Anne glanced at the little boy. She had been furious, but his antics made her crack a smile.

Her gaze fell back on Nathan. "Did you really eat it on your own?"

’A moment ago, I thought he was just making excuses!’

"Yeah," Nathan said.

He rested his hands on the blanket, looking at Anne with some embarrassment.

’I didn’t want this to happen either!’

’Looking back on it now, it was a really stupid thing to do.’

Anne said, "If you don’t like spicy food, then don’t eat it."

"But you like men who can handle spicy food, don’t you? Is it because I can’t that you don’t like me?"

"..." Anne stared at him, speechless. ’So *this* is why he put himself through all this?’

She said in exasperation, "Your personality is so awful that even if you could eat spicy food, no one would like you."

"..." Anne’s words left Nathan speechless.

He looked at her, wanting to say something, but held his tongue.

Anne saw the hurt look on his face and couldn’t understand why he was reacting that way.

’Were my words too harsh?’

’But he’s not the type to care what other people think!’

’Aside from things involving his mother, he couldn’t care less about anything else!’

Anne asked, "Is your stomach still bothering you? I’ll go make you some porridge."

"Yay!" Ian exclaimed. "Mama, I want some too."

Anne hadn’t cooked for the past two days. He’d wanted some of her cooking but hadn’t dared to ask.

After all, he couldn’t trouble Anne every day; he was afraid of making her upset.

Ian was always very careful around his mother.

’I finally have a mama. I can’t scare her away by making her mad.’

Anne looked at Ian and said, "Alright. You stay here and look after your papa. I’ll call you when it’s ready."

With that, she glanced at Nathan and headed downstairs.

Once the porridge was ready, Anne brought it upstairs. There was a bowl for Nathan and one for Ian.

She sat beside him, watching Nathan. "Eat up."

"I don’t feel well. I don’t want to eat," Nathan said, being difficult.

His physical discomfort was a minor issue now. What really bothered him were Anne’s words.

Even if he learned to eat spicy food, she still wouldn’t like someone like him.

That one sentence had left him feeling miserable.

She was right here in front of him, and he wanted so badly to get closer, yet the distance between them felt immense.

Right now, Nathan’s biggest regret was signing those divorce papers.

’If I could go back in time, I’d strangle my past self!’

Anne held the bowl and sat on the edge of the bed. "Eat."

Her tone was patient.

Seeing her patient gesture, Nathan asked, "I thought you didn’t like me."

"That doesn’t mean I can just ignore you," Anne said. "And... thank you for the work thing."

Hearing this, Nathan raised an eyebrow. "Oh, so you only came to check on me because of that."

’And here I was, wondering why you were being so nice all of a sudden!’

Anne looked at him. "What else would it be?"

"Nothing." Having just been shot down by her, Nathan didn’t feel like setting himself up for more disappointment.

"By the way," Anne said, "do you know someone named Caleb Summers?"

At the mention of his name, Nathan froze and looked at Anne. "What about him? Did he come looking for you?"

"He seems to be hostile toward me," Anne said.

Anne felt she had to mention this to Nathan.

’Otherwise, I might not even know what hit me.’

"Are you okay?" Nathan asked. "If he ever comes looking for you again, you call me."

"No, I’m fine. He doesn’t know who I am; he just showed up at the hospital today." Recalling how she’d managed to bluff her way through the encounter, Anne asked, "Are you on bad terms with him?"

"Not particularly." Nathan had no intention of admitting they were on good terms.

But...

’Caleb Summers dared to go see Anne behind my back!’

’I have to teach him a lesson for this!’

Hearing Nathan say they weren’t on good terms, Anne mostly understood. Caleb Summers probably wanted to use her to get to Nathan.

"It was pretty scary, him just showing up out of the blue like that."

"Don’t worry, I’ll go talk to him." Nathan looked at her. "As long as you’re okay, that’s all that matters."
