Chapter 266: Wanting Her Company
He knew that with the company’s current situation, Caleb Summers would get ideas.
But if he dared to touch Anne Sutton, he was a dead man!
Nathan Fawcett also found himself strange. He looked at the woman before him; in the past, he had only felt hatred for her...
But ever since learning the truth about their child—that she had been a victim—he couldn’t look at her without feeling a profound sense of guilt.
Naturally, he couldn’t possibly let her get hurt again!
Anne Sutton saw Nathan Fawcett staring at her and, for some reason, felt that the way he looked at her recently seemed a little different.
He had clearly blamed her for not wanting Ian before, but now his attitude toward her...
’Why does he seem so much gentler?’
’It must be my imagination!’
Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett and reminded him, "Hurry up and eat! Ian is almost finished."
Although Ian was young, he was no trouble at all when it came to eating. He would obediently eat by himself until he was full.
Hearing Anne Sutton’s words, Nathan Fawcett let her feed him.
He, for one, quite enjoyed the feeling of being taken care of by her.
Ian had just finished eating when he saw Anne Sutton feeding Nathan Fawcett. "Shame on you!" he said.
Nathan Fawcett: "..."
He froze for a moment, then looked at his son—yes, this was the very same son who had just called him a moron. "What is it now?"
"I can eat by myself, so why can’t you? You’re worse than a three-year-old."
"..." Nathan Fawcett was discovering that Ian existed solely to piss him off!
He said, "I’m sick right now!"
"But I eat by myself even when I’m sick."
Anne Sutton glanced at her son. "Next time you’re sick, Mommy will take care of you."
"Really?" Ian said. "Thanks, Mommy."
Anne Sutton said, "But it’s best if you don’t get sick. Mommy wants to see you healthy and well."
Ian nodded. "I won’t be like Dad and always make people worry."
His words were a clear jab at Nathan Fawcett.
Nathan Fawcett realized that ever since Anne Sutton had moved in, Ian had been getting more and more out of hand!
Seeing that Nathan Fawcett was about to pick a fight with Ian, Anne Sutton said, "Just hurry up and eat! I’ll clear the dishes when you’re done."
When Nathan Fawcett heard her, not only did he not hurry, but he actually started eating even slower than before.
Anne Sutton looked at the man. "What is wrong with you? Even Ian doesn’t dilly-dally like this."
"You’re right, there is something wrong with me. You’re only just now figuring that out?"
"What kind of illness?" Anne Sutton asked, gazing at him.
Nathan Fawcett said softly, "Guess!"
’An illness that can’t be cured without the medicine that is her!’
As he finished speaking, Anne Sutton felt that something was off.
’He’s looking at me with that gaze again!’
For some reason, Anne Sutton just felt that this man had been acting a little strange lately.
After finally finishing feeding Nathan Fawcett, Anne Sutton stood up and said, "You get some rest. I’m going to take Ian to bathe and go to bed."
Nathan Fawcett said, "Are you just going to leave me like this?"
Anne Sutton said, "You’ve finished eating. What else are you going to do besides sleep?"
"I need to talk to you about something. Come back in a bit." Fearing she would just abandon him there, Nathan Fawcett gave her a heads-up.
Anne Sutton looked at him, then at Ian beside her. She figured Nathan Fawcett had something to say that wasn’t convenient to discuss in front of a child, so she agreed.
She first went to help Ian with his bath, coaxed him to sleep, then took a shower and changed her clothes before returning.
Nathan Fawcett was lying on the large bed with his eyes closed. Seeing him like this, Anne Sutton walked over and said, "Asleep?"
He didn’t make a sound.
She reached out, tucked him in, and sighed helplessly in her heart. ’And he said he had something to talk to me about...’
’...but he ended up falling asleep himself!’
She had already gotten back late today, and on top of that, she had to cook porridge for him and then feed him. It was already very late.
Anne Sutton was exhausted and wanted to go back to her own room to rest soon.
But just as she turned to leave, a hand shot out from behind and grabbed her wrist.
Anne Sutton turned back to see his eyes were open. In the lamplight, his dark irises seemed deep enough to drown a person in them.
Anne Sutton looked at him and said calmly, "You’re awake?"
Nathan Fawcett nodded. "I wasn’t asleep."
"Then why didn’t you say anything when I was talking just now? Lost your voice?"
She was speechless!
A corner of Nathan Fawcett’s mouth lifted into a smirk. Looking at her, he said, "Sit."
Anne Sutton said, "I’m dead tired. If you have something to say, just say it."
She sat down and waited for him.
Nathan Fawcett had just grabbed her hand to stop her from leaving.
And now, he showed no intention of letting go.
Ian had been in the room earlier, but now it was just the two of them, and the atmosphere was very awkward.
Anne Sutton looked at his hand holding hers...
Anne Sutton’s hands were fair and delicate.
Nathan Fawcett’s hands, compared to hers, were a tiny bit darker in shade.
His hands were also much larger.
They formed a stark contrast with hers.
Seeing that he remained silent, Anne Sutton felt the atmosphere growing more and more awkward.
She urged him, "Are you going to say something or not? If not, I’m leaving."
’He said he needed to talk to me, told me to come over, and now he’s just stalling.’
Seeing she was about to leave, Nathan Fawcett said, "I don’t feel well."
"Just eat more porridge, and you’ll be fine in a couple of days," Anne Sutton said. "You should know the state of your own stomach. Don’t mess around with your health. All you do is cause trouble for others."
Having to take care of him after a long day at work, Anne Sutton felt like she was about to have a breakdown.
Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said, "I know!"
"If you know, then I’m going back." Anne Sutton yawned. "I’m exhausted. I had a busy day. I’ve been transferred to the outpatient clinic now! There’s a lot to do."
Nathan Fawcett looked at her without a word, but he didn’t loosen his grip on her hand.
He had no intention of letting her go!
Anne Sutton said, "Either say what you want to say, or let go of my hand right now!"
"Say what?" Nathan Fawcett played dumb.
Anne Sutton said, "Didn’t you just say you needed me to come over for something?"
"I want you to sleep with me."
"..." Anne Sutton’s eyes widened as she stared at Nathan Fawcett.
Seeing her strong reaction, Nathan Fawcett said, "Just sleeping. Where did your mind go? I won’t even touch you! I’m this uncomfortable, and you can’t even stay with me?"
He looked pitiful.
Before Anne Sutton could even speak, Nathan Fawcett had already started playing the victim. "My health has been poor since I was a child. My dad was always busy with work, and my mother wasn’t around. I basically grew up on my own. No one ever took care of me. Now I just want someone to stay with me, is that too much to ask? You know that in this house, besides you, no one truly cares about me."
Hearing his words, Anne Sutton was actually moved.
She sized up Nathan Fawcett’s room. Although she’d been here before, she had never really looked at it closely.
’This probably isn’t Nathan Fawcett’s room, but Ethan Linden’s.’
’They are both Anna Linden’s sons, yet Ethan Linden had everything here, while Nathan Fawcett couldn’t even have his own name and had to live in fear of his identity being exposed.’
’The moment others sense a hint of the truth, they’re eager to prove he’s Nathan Fawcett, not Ethan Linden, the rightful heir.’
’Even though Ethan Linden is dead, his place in Anna Linden’s heart is still far more important than Nathan Fawcett’s.’
(Gone to watch the game...)
