Chapter 279: I Am the Person Who Loves You the Most in This World
After kissing her, Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said, "One day, I’ll make you want to be with me willingly. I’ll make you beg to be with me."
"In your dreams!" Anne Sutton said dismissively.
’He’s so arrogant!’
’As if I would!’
"Just you wait and see."
Nathan Fawcett was full of confidence.
Just then, Anne Sutton’s phone rang.
She took it out and glanced at the screen, seeing that the call was from Charles Prescott.
Seeing the call, Anne Sutton felt a sense of unreality. "Why is he calling me now?"
"I don’t know," Nathan Fawcett said.
"I’m taking this," Anne Sutton said.
She motioned for Nathan Fawcett to be quiet and pressed the answer button. "Hello."
Charles Prescott’s voice was deep and low. "Are you with Ethan Linden now?"
Anne Sutton glanced at Nathan Fawcett’s hand, which was still resting on her waist. She remembered Mia Shaw being kicked out last night. Given Mia’s relationship with Charles Prescott, there was no way she wouldn’t have told him.
’So Charles has heard the news.’
"Yes," Anne Sutton replied.
As she spoke, Nathan Fawcett’s hand gave her waist a gentle squeeze.
She glared at the man.
"Does Nathan Fawcett know you’re with him?" Charles Prescott asked.
Anne Sutton said, "Nathan Fawcett and I are divorced. It doesn’t matter who I’m with; it has nothing to do with him! Why are you even bringing this up?"
’How ridiculous!’
’He’s clearly trying to use Nathan Fawcett to intimidate me.’
’Too bad Charles Prescott would never guess that Ethan Linden and Nathan Fawcett are the same person!’
"I’m just reminding you," Charles Prescott said. "Ethan Linden is Nathan Fawcett’s brother, after all. Aren’t you ashamed of yourself, being so involved with two brothers?"
"I don’t think so at all!" Anne Sutton retorted. "With Ethan Linden’s standing, everyone else is just jealous that I’m with him. People would only find it shameful if I were with you, right? My ex-fiancé... who’s also my ex-nephew?"
"..." Charles Prescott fell silent, stunned by Anne Sutton’s words.
Seeing that he had gone quiet, Anne Sutton said, "If there’s nothing else, you should hang up. I’m busy right now, so don’t bother me."
Charles Prescott’s mouth twitched. "Are you living at Ethan Linden’s house now?"
"You’re mistaken," Anne Sutton said. "I’m not just living in his house—he’s right next to me. We slept together last night. What, do you want to hear the details? If you don’t mind, I can tell you everything."
Knowing what Charles Prescott hated to hear, Anne Sutton deliberately provoked him.
Nathan Fawcett watched the woman, his eyes deep and unreadable...
Hearing Anne Sutton’s words, a furious Charles Prescott hung up the phone immediately.
Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "Satisfied?"
"More or less," Anne Sutton replied. "I don’t know why, but just hearing his voice on the phone pisses me off."
Nathan Fawcett said, "You mentioned details about us being together last night. Go on, I’m actually interested to hear them."
Anne Sutton shot him a look. "I was just trying to piss him off, wasn’t I?"
"Didn’t you say you don’t want to be with me? Yet you’re going around telling people you’re with Ethan Linden?"
"You think I wanted to say that?" Anne Sutton snapped. "It was obviously Mia Shaw who went and tattled last night! Charles Prescott already knew, so I had no choice but to go along with it."
After she showed up at the Linden Family’s home yesterday, it would be impossible to explain things away, even if she wanted to.
Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, "It just occurred to me... since I went out with you last night, everyone probably thinks we’re together now, don’t they?"
"They probably... wouldn’t, right?" Nathan Fawcett said.
"Of course they would!" Anne Sutton said. "I’m sure that’s what all of them are thinking right now."
She suddenly felt like she had fallen right into his trap!
Nathan Fawcett said, "Well, since everyone already thinks so, why don’t we... just go along with it? Marrying me might be a bit of a loss for you, but at least you’d get a son out of the deal."
"..." Anne Sutton didn’t say anything.
"How about it?" Nathan Fawcett pressed.
Anne Sutton looked at him and shook her head. "No."
"..." Nathan Fawcett sighed. "You really have a heart of stone."
He was only now realizing that once a woman was disappointed in you, no amount of effort could melt her heart.
Anne Sutton was exactly like that now, completely unreceptive.
...
"I have to get to work," Anne Sutton said.
She got out of bed and went to wash up.
Unable to do anything about her, Nathan Fawcett went to the office as well.
Just as he arrived at the company, he saw Ryan Linden walk in. Ryan froze when he saw Nathan Fawcett.
He walked up to Nathan Fawcett and said, "I drank too much last night!"
"If you still remember what happened last night, it seems you didn’t drink that much," Nathan Fawcett replied. "But even though you caused a scene, you still have to pay back the money you owe."
"..." Ryan Linden’s face darkened as he listened to Nathan Fawcett. He had already been chewed out by his father first thing in the morning.
His father had told him he shouldn’t have let his relationship with Ethan get so bad.
After saying his piece, Nathan Fawcett walked away.
Ryan Linden watched his back, his expression grim.
Just then, Caleb Summers walked in. He stopped beside Ryan Linden and said, "Morning."
When Ryan Linden saw Caleb Summers, he said, "President Summers."
At the company, Ryan Linden’s and Caleb Summers’s job titles sounded similar, but Caleb’s actual authority was much higher.
One reason was his close relationship with Nathan Fawcett, and another was that he was the heir to the Summers Family...
Ryan Linden, on the other hand, had no powerful family backing. He got by entirely on his surname, Linden, and the face the former Family Head had shown them.
Caleb Summers looked at Ryan Linden. "I hear you had too much to drink last night."
Ryan Linden coughed. "It was my father’s birthday last night, so I had a little extra."
"Come with me for a second." Caleb Summers slung an arm around his shoulder and guided him toward the restroom.
A short while later, when they came out, Ryan Linden’s face was black and blue.
Caleb Summers looked at Ryan Linden. "Does it hurt?"
Ryan Linden shook his head.
’It hurts! It hurts like hell, but he didn’t dare say it in front of Caleb Summers.’
Caleb Summers put his arm around him again, acting like they were the best of friends, but his words were a clear warning. "I don’t care what grievances you have with Ethan, but if you continue to disrespect him in the future, I will definitely come looking for you. Understand?"
Ryan Linden looked at the man and nodded.
’Damn it. He had thought Ethan Linden would be the one to give him trouble today, but he hadn’t.’
’Instead, this Caleb Summers had to stick his nose in and beat him up.’
...
During the meeting, Nathan Fawcett noticed Ryan Linden’s appearance and asked, "What happened to him?"
Caleb Summers shifted his chair, leaning closer. "I heard he offended you last night while he was drunk, so I took the liberty of loosening up my limbs."
Nathan Fawcett looked at Caleb Summers. "..."
Caleb Summers said, "Ethan, see? I’m your best friend, aren’t I? Don’t you go breaking my heart over a woman again! Also, I heard you took that woman to your uncle’s birthday banquet yesterday. On what grounds? Didn’t I tell you to stay away from her?"
"You’ve clearly got too much time on your hands, spending all day prying into my business," Nathan Fawcett said.
"Of course! Who else in this world loves you more than I do?"
