He opened the bag on the table. Inside was a cake he had just bought for Anne Sutton nearby.

Anne Sutton watched this unfold and asked, "You bought me something to eat, too?"

Ian said, "I wanted to save it for you!"

Anne Sutton took a bite. "Thank you, Ian."

With wide eyes, Ian looked at her and asked, "Mommy, is it good?"

Anne Sutton nodded.

Nathan Fawcett sat to one side, silent.

Anne Sutton glanced at him and asked, "Why are you here?"

She recalled his mother coming to see her and wondered if Nathan Fawcett knew about it.

Anne was still suspicious when she heard Nathan Fawcett say, "My mom told me to come find you."

At Nathan Fawcett’s words, the corner of Anne’s mouth twitched. "What, she sent you to take me back to the Linden family?"

Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton. "I thought you wouldn’t refuse. I didn’t expect you to turn her down."

"..." Anne Sutton retorted, "Why would you think I wouldn’t refuse? I finally managed to divorce you. Why on earth would I go to your family’s house?"

Nathan Fawcett glanced at Ian, then looked at the nanny. "Take Ian downstairs for a walk."

The nanny knew the two of them had something to talk about and quickly agreed. "Come on, Young Master."

Ian, who had just taken a bite of cake, heard the nanny and said, "But I want to stay with my mommy."

Nathan Fawcett gave him a look. "Be good."

Anne Sutton sat on the sofa. Once Ian was led out by the nanny, she turned to Nathan Fawcett. "If you have something to say, just say it. You even sent the child away."

"There are some things I don’t want to say in front of the child," said Nathan Fawcett. "I just want to ask you, do you love Ian? Do you consider him your child?"

Anne Sutton froze at his words, then looked at Nathan Fawcett. "Of course I love him! If I didn’t, why would I be here? To go to the hospital every day just so your mother can give me hell? Do you think I have nothing better to do?"

Nathan Fawcett said, "Every day, Ian wishes you would come back and live with us. Before, my mother was against it. Now that she’s agreed, you shouldn’t refuse, should you?"

"..." Anne Sutton said, "I just don’t want to be with you. What would happen if I moved into the Linden family home? Not a single person in your family thinks I’m good enough. They all say that I, Anne Sutton, was marrying up by being with you! That I don’t deserve you! Isn’t the point of life to be comfortable? I’m not happy when I’m with you. Nathan Fawcett, you never took me seriously! From start to finish, I was just a tool for bearing children in your eyes. You want me to marry you now? But you’re Ethan Linden. What would people think?"

Hearing what Anne Sutton said, Nathan Fawcett retorted, "Are you saying all this because you have a new option? Do you want to be with Justin Shields?"

"That’s right!" Anne Sutton said. "Whether it’s Justin Shields or any other man, if I date someone else, at least I’ll be treated fairly. But with you, what am I? I don’t even get the most basic respect! You just treat me like a means to an end. That’s why for all these years, with the child by your side, you were able to hide this from me. If you had even a shred of respect for me, you wouldn’t have kept this a secret until I had to find out myself."

Hearing Anne Sutton’s accusations, Nathan Fawcett recalled what happened with Ian and explained, "I was just so angry at the time. I thought you didn’t love Ian. I thought you were the one who wanted to abort the baby."

"Oh," Anne Sutton said meaningfully. "So, you don’t think that way anymore?"

"Didn’t you explain last time?" Nathan Fawcett said. "I’ve thought about it, and what you said was right. I misunderstood you, which is what led to all these problems. But now, if we just make an effort, we can give Ian a complete family! Do you want to see Ian crying in front of you next time he has to go home with me? Do you want that?"

Nathan Fawcett’s words made Anne Sutton think of the last time she and Ian had been separated.

Her heart had really ached that day.

She looked at Nathan Fawcett, silent, unsure of what to say.

She truly couldn’t bear to be apart from Ian. He was her only weak spot.

But that didn’t mean she was willing to live without any dignity.

Nathan Fawcett said, "Judging by your expression, you don’t want that either, right? If that’s the case, then think it over. Or, if you have any conditions, you can name them. I’ll consider them."

Anne Sutton said, "Your mother came to me because you can’t touch other women."

"..." At the mention of this, Nathan Fawcett looked embarrassed. "It’s not like you don’t know about that."

"What," Anne Sutton said. "You’re using Ian to get me back just to be your bedmate? To be a free object for you to release your frustrations on?"

"..." Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said, "I wasn’t thinking that."

"That’s not for sure," Anne Sutton said. "Who knows what you’re really thinking when you’re with me. Just because I’m the only one you can touch, does that mean I’m obligated to let you? Nathan Fawcett, I don’t know if you really can’t touch other women, but I don’t have that particular problem. I can be with whoever I want—that’s my freedom."

"..." As he listened to her, the corner of Nathan Fawcett’s mouth twitched. He felt as if she had him right where she wanted him.

He said seriously, "I came to find you for Ian’s sake. He’s still young and has never had a mother by his side. Now that he finally knows the truth and knows you’re his mom, he can’t help but miss you. Everything I’m doing is simply in the hope that he can have a complete family, unlike what I had... I don’t want him to grow up with the same sense of emptiness I did."

At the mention of Nathan Fawcett’s relationship with his mother, Anne Sutton fell silent for a moment.

She had seen Nathan Fawcett at his most insecure in front of his mother...

She knew the lack of familial affection had greatly affected his personality.

Anne Sutton thought about how Ian always tried to sneak away and realized his personality was a bit strange, too.

He was only ever this sweet when he was with her.

Seeing that his words had moved her, Nathan Fawcett pressed on. "For Ian’s sake, you want him to grow up healthy, right? He needs you with him. Don’t even start with asking me to give him to you. To him, both his parents are equally important. His life would be greatly affected without you, and without me."

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett, admitting he was very persuasive. Thinking of her son, she said, "I can move into your family home. I can be there for Ian as he grows up."

Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett breathed a sigh of relief.

Though he hadn’t shown himself to Anne Sutton recently, he had been waiting for this day.

But in the next second, he heard Anne Sutton say, "However, I have a condition..."

Nathan Fawcett asked, "What condition?"

"...After I move into your family’s home, you are not to touch me. We are divorced. I’m only agreeing to take care of Ian with you; I never agreed to be your bedmate."
