Chapter 210: I Get Angry the Moment I Hear You Speak

She wanted to be there to see Charles and Miles Prescott fall from power.

For years, she had watched them revel in their success, and she was sick of it.

After all, their success was built on her suffering.

After hearing what she said, Nathan Fawcett replied, "Don’t worry. I’ll let you know."

Anne Sutton said, "Good."

...

Anne Sutton rested at home for two days before returning to work at the hospital. The hospital director had previously told her to stay home, a punishment for hitting Maya Evans.

However, Nathan Fawcett had pulled some strings with the hospital. Plus, Anne had rested enough at home. Her mother’s condition was being monitored and had improved considerably, so she had also adjusted her mindset and was no longer letting the business with her father and Maya Evans affect her.

The morning was a bit chilly. When she came downstairs, she saw Nathan Fawcett standing by the door, a car parked beside him.

Anne Sutton asked, "Did you get a new car?"

Nathan Fawcett turned and glanced at the pink Porsche behind him. "Do you like it?" he asked.

Anne Sutton said, "It’s okay. The color doesn’t really suit you, though."

Hearing her, Nathan Fawcett’s lips quirked into a slight smile. "Get in!"

Anne Sutton glanced at him and walked over. Nathan Fawcett opened the driver’s side door and said to her, "I want you to drive."

"..." Anne Sutton looked at him. "Why?"

Nathan Fawcett said, "Come on! Help me test out the new car. See how it handles."

Anne gave the man a suspicious look but got in the car anyway.

The car she had been driving was a gift from her father when she first started working.

It was no comparison to this new one.

Anne wasn’t quite used to it.

Nathan Fawcett sat in the passenger seat. Seeing she was a bit lost, he started explaining how to operate it and introducing its features.

Anne sat in her seat, watching him. He was incredibly focused as he spoke.

Nathan was halfway through his explanation when he noticed her staring at him. The atmosphere grew a little intimate. He lifted a finger and gently tapped the tip of her nose. "What are you staring at me for?"

His fingers were long and slender. The light touch didn’t just graze the tip of her nose; it felt like it had grazed her heart.

Anne said uncomfortably, "It’s nothing."

’I must be going blind!’

’For a second there, I actually thought he was handsome!’

Nathan Fawcett said, "Did you get all that? Try it out yourself and see if there’s anything you don’t understand."

"Why don’t you drive it yourself?" Anne said. "I’m scared to drive your new car. What if I scratch or dent it?"

Nathan gazed at her. "Just try it."

Anne glanced at the man, unable to figure him out. She did as he said, started the car, and drove off.

Once on the road, she adapted quickly. ’This expensive car is totally different from mine!’

Anne said to Nathan, "What made you suddenly decide to buy a car?"

Nathan replied, "Your car is getting pretty old. I know you hospital folks like to keep a low profile, but... I still thought you needed a new one."

"You bought it for me?" Anne looked at him, astonished.

Nathan nodded. "Yeah. I picked it out. This one suits you. It’s not too expensive, so it won’t be too flashy when you drive it to the hospital."

"This isn’t flashy?" ’If this isn’t flashy, then I don’t know what is!’

Nathan said, "You’re my wife, after all. Driving a car like this is already very understated, understand?"

"..." Anne looked at Nathan. For a second, she thought he might have a point.

Nathan glanced at her and said, "Sometimes, if you’re too modest, people will look down on you."

"I’m not used to being so high-profile."

Nathan said, "You’ll get used to it."

"..."

Nathan drove her to the hospital, handed her the keys, and left.

-

That evening, when Anne finished her shift, he showed up again to pick her up from work.

For the past few days, it was as if Nathan didn’t even have to go to work.

He would take her to the hospital in the morning and pick her up to go home at night.

The temperature had dropped quite a bit recently. That night, as Anne was lying in bed, Nathan came in, already in his pajamas, and climbed into bed with her.

Anne looked at him and asked, "You don’t have to work these days?"

He lay down beside her. "I have a meeting on Monday."

Anne asked, "Is it about the succession?"

Nathan nodded. "Yeah. Miles Prescott was away, but he’ll be back on Monday. I’ve got everything more or less arranged. Now we just wait for the meeting. Are you free on Monday?"

"I can take the day off. I haven’t had a break recently anyway."

Nathan looked at her, then reached over, pulled her close, and kissed her on the forehead.

The gesture was full of affection. Anne looked up at him, feeling that he had been uncharacteristically gentle lately.

She looked at him, not pushing him away.

Nathan held her, his eyes gazing at her softly. He lowered his head and kissed her again.

Anne looked at the man and wrapped her arms around him.

’He’s been so warm to me lately,’ she thought. ’I feel like I’m about to get lost in his affection.’

’We clearly have no future together, and I have no idea what he’s up to.’

’When I’m with him, I can’t be bothered to think about it. I just want to indulge in this moment of tenderness.’

’Once he’s gone, all of this will disappear!’

...

On Sunday afternoon, Charles Prescott came to the hospital.

He claimed he was there for a physical check-up and just dropped by to see Anne.

When Anne saw him, she knew he must be there for a reason.

"What are you doing here?"

Charles Prescott said, "I missed you, of course."

"Cut the crap."

"..." Charles reached out, loosened his tie, and said, "You know the company’s holding a shareholder meeting tomorrow, right?"

Anne nodded. "Mm-hm. Of course, I know."

’It’d be strange if I didn’t!’

Charles said, "I’ve noticed Ethan Linden hasn’t made a move recently. He’s not even going to the company. What is he thinking?"

"..." Anne wasn’t a fool. She knew immediately that Charles was here to fish for information.

She said, "Why don’t you go ask Ethan yourself? You’ll find out tomorrow anyway."

Charles said, "Can’t you just give me a hint?"

"What’s the matter? Lost your confidence?" Anne looked at him with curiosity.

Hearing her, Charles’s lips quirked. "I just want to see what tricks he has up his sleeve. Since you won’t say anything, it must mean you have nothing to tell. Looks like I was worried for nothing."

"That reverse psychology won’t work on me," Anne said. "I’m not an idiot."

’As if I’d ever tell him Nathan’s trump card!’

’Charles would never dream that his opponent wasn’t Ethan Linden, but Nathan Fawcett himself.’

Charles looked at her and said, "Anne, if I really do lose everything, will you forgive me? I’ve always felt ashamed about what happened with the child. I feel like I let you down."

"Can you just shut up?" Anne glared at him. "The second you open your mouth, I get pissed off."
