Chapter 281: He Hits You, Don’t You Feel Pain?

Seeing that all the blame was being pushed onto Caleb Summers, Lana Langley glared at Nathan Fawcett and could only find another reason to lash out. "Ethan, you tell me, hasn’t Ryan Linden been good enough to you?! And you still insist he pay you back that eighty million! Do you have any idea he’s about to sell our house?! That house was a gift from the old man to our little Donna!"

To pay back the money, Ryan Linden was now resorting to desperate measures...

He was even thinking of selling the family home!

So Lana Langley’s life wasn’t easy, either.

She could only shift all the blame onto Ethan Linden!

’She felt that as long as Ethan didn’t push Ryan so hard, Ryan wouldn’t be taking it out on his own family.’

Nathan Fawcett heard Lana’s words and said, "Even if he sells it, that’s his problem."

"..." Lana Langley looked at Nathan Fawcett. "You’re truly cold-blooded. You were never like this before."

With that, she stormed out the door, still muttering curses as she walked away.

Anne Sutton watched the scene unfold. She walked over to Nathan Fawcett’s side and gazed at Lana’s retreating figure.

Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "She didn’t give you a hard time, did she?"

"Not really," Anne Sutton said. "But... I just saw she has bruises on her hands. I don’t know if her husband did it. That brother of yours... he’s not abusive, is he?"

’If someone else had hit her, Lana would definitely have gone and tattled!’

’But she was actually trying to cover for him...’

It was hard for Anne Sutton not to let her imagination run wild.

After hearing Anne Sutton’s words, Nathan Fawcett glanced in the direction Lana had gone. "But from the look of it, doesn’t she seem used to it?"

Anne Sutton knew what Nathan Fawcett meant.

’Every time Lana showed up, she was always defending her husband, never saying a single bad word about Ryan Linden.’

’In her eyes, she and Ryan were a family unit!’

’Everyone else was an outsider.’

Anne Sutton asked, "Did you really have someone beat Ryan up?"

Nathan Fawcett said, "Of course not! Didn’t the housekeeper just say? Caleb Summers did it."

"Caleb Summers? Why would he do that?" Anne Sutton still didn’t quite understand the relationship between Nathan Fawcett and Caleb Summers.

Nathan Fawcett replied, "Who knows what he’s thinking?"

’He couldn’t very well say it was because Caleb was in love with him, could he?’

...

When Lana Langley got home, she saw Ryan Linden rummaging through their things.

He clearly hadn’t found what he was looking for. When he saw Lana come back, he demanded, "Where’s the deed to our house?"

Lana glanced at his bruised face. "What deed?"

"Stop playing dumb with me!" Ryan Linden said. "Hurry up and give me the deed! If I don’t get it, I’m dead meat!"

Lana looked at Ryan. "Just go apologize to Ethan and explain everything. He won’t push us like this! That house is this family’s only hope. Donna will need a place to live when he grows up. You have to think about your son!"

Ryan said, "Live in what? He’s just a little kid! Give me the deed. I’ll give it back as soon as I get the money."

’The house could be mortgaged. He had to get that money back now.’

Lana said, "You’re not going to get into sports betting again, are you!"

’Besides that, she couldn’t think of any other way for Ryan to get that kind of money back!’

Ryan Linden snapped, "Cut the crap and hurry up! It’s bad enough that Ethan is targeting me every day, but you’re my wife, and you’re acting like this too! Are you asking for a beating?! Keep this up and you can get the hell out! There’s no room for you in this house."

Donna stood to the side, watching his father, his little mouth twisting into a pout.

Lana said, "Even if you tell me to get out, I don’t know where the deed is. I lost it! We’ll have to apply for a replacement, and that takes time. I’ll give it to you once it’s processed!"

"What did you say?" Hearing this, Ryan Linden stared at Lana in disbelief, then lunged forward and grabbed her by the collar. "Are you trying to get me to hit you? I guess you didn’t get enough a few days ago, huh?"

"Ryan!" Lana cried. "You’ve really gone mad! Ethan is your own family, why are you being so spiteful with him?"

"Me, being spiteful with him?" Ryan retorted. "If I go to him and admit I was sports betting, I’ll never be allowed back in the company! If I get kicked out, how am I supposed to live? Where am I going to earn money to support you? Huh? All you know how to do is spend money. Have you ever once tried to understand how hard I have it?"

As he spoke, his eyes fell on the necklace around Lana’s neck. He snatched it and ripped it off. "Look at you, all you know how to do is buy things like this! Don’t you ever think about how hard your husband has to work to make a living?!"

The two of them started to fight, and Chubby just cried off to the side.

Just then, there was a knock on the door.

Ryan Linden froze. He looked up and saw Anne Sutton standing there.

Lana Langley was also stunned to see Anne Sutton.

’Why is she here?’

Though the couple’s relationship was terrible in private, they always put on an act of being loving and affectionate in public.

At the sight of Anne Sutton, Ryan Linden immediately stopped himself.

He asked Anne Sutton, "Why are you here?"

He was clearly not happy to see her.

Anne Sutton looked at the two who had just been fighting. Chubby was still crying.

Lana Langley went to her son’s side and hugged him. "Sweetheart, don’t cry! Mommy’s here!"

Anne Sutton held out her hand, revealing an earring. "You dropped your earring, so I brought it over. Besides, you did say I should come over and be your guest. You’re not going to tell me I’m unwelcome, are you?"

Lana Langley saw the earring, walked over, and took it from Anne.

Seeing this, Ryan Linden stood up and went upstairs.

Only after he was gone did Lana’s gaze fall back on Anne Sutton. "Why are you here?"

’She had invited Anne over before, but Anne had never come.’

’And now she just happens to show up?’

’She obviously came just to gloat.’

Anne Sutton sat down. "Did I come at a bad time?"

Lana reached out and smoothed her clothes. "You saw all that?"

Anne Sutton said, "Pretty much."

’The fight was so loud, she’d heard it the moment she stepped into the yard.’

’It’s not like she was deaf!’

’That Ryan Linden was clearly addicted to gambling. He’d completely lost his mind!’

’Honestly, Anne was surprised that domestic violence like this would happen in a family like the Lindens.’

Lana said, "This is my own family’s business."

Anne Sutton replied, "Are you sure it’s just your family’s business? Have you ever considered that the more you cover for him, the more you’ll suffer later? That’s how people are. Give them an inch, and they’ll take a mile."

"And what if I don’t put up with it?" Lana said. "He and I are family! I’m so fat now, it’s a miracle he hasn’t divorced me! He just has a bit of a bad temper, but he’s usually pretty good to us! When he has money, he’s willing to spend it on me! Besides, if I make a big deal out of it, what good would it do this family, other than humiliating us?"

"..." Anne Sutton sat there, just looking at Lana.

’She didn’t even know where to begin her retort!’

Lana continued, "You wouldn’t understand! You’ve had it easy. How could you be like me? If I could marry Nathan Fawcett, inherit the Fawcett Family fortune, and then end up with Ethan Linden like you, of course I’d think it was no big deal! But do I have a choice?"

Anne Sutton had always found her rather detestable.

But seeing her like this, she couldn’t help but feel she was also very pitiful.

She glanced at the bruises on Lana’s hands. "When he hits you, doesn’t it hurt?"
