Chapter 249: I Have Something to Tell You
"I want to get her out of the way too, but she’s not into me," Justin Shields sighed. "And I can’t exactly force her, can I?"
"With your skills, there’s a woman who can actually refuse you?" Stella Shields said. "Brother, don’t you get it? If you don’t win her over, and she ends up with Ethan Linden, I’ll have no chance at all! And the Shields Family won’t be what it is today! Do you really want to go back to how things were before?"
Hearing Stella Shields’s words, Justin Shields fell silent.
Anne Sutton had Nathan Fawcett; she wouldn’t give him the time of day!
He had originally thought he might have a chance after Anne Sutton divorced Nathan Fawcett, but it turned out he had gotten his hopes up for nothing.
Stella Shields said, "Fine, if you don’t want to care about the family, then just let her get together with Ethan Linden! When that happens, I won’t be the only one out of luck. The future of the Shields Family is in your hands."
Justin Shields said, "You should get some rest. I’m hanging up."
With that, he hung up the phone.
Sitting at his desk, Justin Shields fell silent.
Ever since Stella Shields went to the Linden Family, the Shields Family’s business had been flourishing, a world apart from before.
He used to think that if he could get together with Anne Sutton and Stella Shields successfully married Ethan Linden, everything would be different.
’But now... it seems that path is still a long way off!’
...
Anne Sutton finished tidying up, took a shower, and went to bed.
It was her first night in the Linden family home, and she didn’t sleep very well.
The house was huge, but it felt cold and impersonal. Most importantly, everything here felt unfamiliar to her.
If it weren’t for Ian, she would much rather have stayed in her own place. At least there she was free and didn’t have to walk on eggshells around anyone.
She picked up her phone and saw Nathan Fawcett’s WeChat. Nathan Fawcett had two WeChat accounts: one under his real name, and one as Ethan Linden.
Ever since he came to Veridia and started using the identity of Ethan Linden, he had even switched to using the "Ethan Linden" WeChat. He hadn’t used his own account in a long time.
The account Anne Sutton was looking at now was the one Nathan Fawcett used to use.
Looking at her phone, Anne Sutton realized she had sent Nathan Fawcett a lot of messages over the past few years, all sent when she didn’t know he was still alive.
Back then, in her heart, Nathan Fawcett was someone special—an object of her thoughts, her hope, and also a regret she could never remedy.
She never thought things would turn out like this one day.
Anne Sutton looked at the old messages and felt her skin crawl. Thank goodness Nathan Fawcett didn’t use this WeChat account anymore. Otherwise...
’If he saw them, wouldn’t I just die of embarrassment?’
...
Anne Sutton stared at her phone, her mind racing for a while, before she finally fell asleep.
She woke up very early in the morning.
As soon as she got up, she joined the housekeeper in the kitchen to make breakfast.
Normally, outside of work, she couldn’t even be bothered to lift a finger, but she was willing to do it because Ian liked it.
The housekeeper stood to the side, watching Anne Sutton cook. "Ma’am, your cooking is so delicious. I don’t know why, but while you were away, I cooked for Young Master Ian, and he didn’t like my food at all."
Anne Sutton replied, "You’re a good cook, too. Ian is just a kid, and he’s partial to my cooking."
"But Mr. Linden doesn’t like my cooking either."
He used to eat the dishes Anne Sutton made with such relish.
But with her own cooking, he would just take a few bites and stop.
Hearing this, Anne Sutton glanced at the housekeeper and said, "Is that so?"
The housekeeper nodded. "It seems I still have a lot to learn."
As the two were talking, they saw Anna Linden coming downstairs.
Anna Linden was wearing loungewear made of soft silk. She had intended to enter the kitchen, but she frowned upon seeing Anne Sutton and the housekeeper there.
Seeing Anna Linden, the housekeeper quickly greeted her, "Ms. Linden."
Anna Linden glanced at Anne Sutton and said, "Where’s the cook? What are you doing here?"
Anne Sutton replied, "The cook is out. I had her take care of something else."
She needed to use the kitchen, and it would be inconvenient to have another person there.
"What, you just got here and you’re already taking over the kitchen?" Although she’d had no choice but to let Anne Sutton move in, Anna Linden still found her disagreeable.
Now that she had a reason, she was naturally going to give her a hard time.
Anne Sutton said, "What would you like to eat? I can make something for you while I’m at it."
"Is the food you make even edible?" Anna Linden hadn’t had much of an appetite recently, so she had wanted some porridge made by the family cook this morning.
She hadn’t expected to come downstairs and see Anne Sutton instead of the cook.
Anne Sutton said, "I can have the housekeeper get you a bowl. I made extra anyway."
Anne Sutton was still quite confident in her cooking skills.
Anne Sutton looked at the housekeeper, who quickly grabbed a bowl, ladled some porridge for Anna Linden, and brought it out to her.
Anna Linden sat at the dining table, watching the scene coldly. Knowing it was made by Anne Sutton, she sneered, "I don’t eat food made by just anyone."
"In that case, you’ll just have to wait for her to come back and cook for you," Anne Sutton said as she walked out. She glanced at the housekeeper and added, "When Ian gets up later, give him the porridge. I’m done with the kitchen, so you can call the other cook and ask her to come back now."
She had to go to work at the hospital soon and couldn’t stay here all day.
The housekeeper nodded. "Alright."
Anne Sutton said, "I’m going to go get changed then."
She had to get ready to leave.
Seeing her leave, Anna Linden remained seated. She glanced at the time and realized she had a meeting today; if she waited any longer, she would be late.
She frowned, looked at the porridge in front of her, picked up the spoon, and took a bite.
She had actually been trying to find fault with Anne Sutton, but after one bite, she was completely surprised... The porridge was unexpectedly delicious.
Especially since she hadn’t had much of an appetite lately, yet this porridge felt exceptionally light and refreshing.
She looked at the housekeeper and asked, "Did Anne Sutton really make this porridge?"
The housekeeper nodded. "Yes! Ms. Sutton’s cooking is excellent. Both Mr. Linden and the young master love it! It’s good, isn’t it?"
Anna Linden frowned. Although she despised Anne Sutton as a person, her appetite proved more honest, and she finished the entire bowl of porridge.
The housekeeper said, "Let me get you another bowl."
Anna Linden was normally a very self-disciplined person who never overate, but this time she couldn’t resist and let the housekeeper refill her bowl.
Anne Sutton was still upstairs getting ready when Nathan Fawcett and Ian came down.
Seeing the breakfast on the table, Ian asked, "Did my mommy make this?"
You could tell at a glance that Anne Sutton had made it; the aroma was incredible!
The housekeeper replied, "Yes, Young Master."
She quickly got bowls and served porridge to both Nathan Fawcett and Ian. Besides the porridge, there were also two small side dishes that Anne Sutton had made to go with it.
Nathan Fawcett sat down, glanced at his mother, and asked, "When did you get back last night?"
Anna Linden replied, "In the middle of the night."
"Did something happen?"
"It’s nothing," Anna Linden said to Nathan Fawcett. "I have something to talk to you about."
