Chapter 263: Whose Wife Has He Got His Eyes On?
Seeing her standing there stunned, Anna Linden looked at her. "Are you surprised? He treats you so well, he’s even willing to give you his father’s company. This job is nothing in comparison. I have no idea what tricks you used to get him so completely infatuated. I can only blame him for being so inexperienced with women."
Anne Sutton: "..."
The corner of her mouth twitched.
Anna Linden looked at her. "I know you’re only staying with the Linden Family for Ian’s sake. But since you’re here, there are a few things I need to make clear to you."
Listening to her, Anne Sutton wondered what new set of rules she was about to be slapped with.
Anna Linden said, "If you get involved with other men and cheat on him, you can forget about ever having a place in this hospital."
Those were harsh words. Even before, when she couldn’t stand the sight of Anne Sutton, she had never said anything like that.
After all, she was a doctor herself and knew how difficult it was to get through medical school and establish a career.
Even in her current position, she wouldn’t casually crush another medical professional’s dream.
And yet, because of Nathan Fawcett, she had actually said such a thing.
But Anne Sutton wasn’t one to back down easily. She looked at Anna Linden and said, "The person I love is Nathan Fawcett. As for Ethan Linden, he has nothing to do with me. I don’t even know him."
Anne Sutton’s words were intentionally argumentative. Listening to her, Anna Linden was so furious she could barely speak. "You..."
’Anne Sutton knows exactly what bothers me, yet she insists on provoking me. If I hadn’t made that promise to Nathan Fawcett, I’d send this little brat right back to doing menial tasks.’
Seeing Anna Linden fall silent, Anne Sutton said, "If you have nothing else to say, I’m going to get back to work."
"Get out!" Anna Linden was fuming.
Chloe Chase, who had been standing to the side, watched the scene unfold. She realized that Anne Sutton managed to infuriate Anna Linden every single time.
She even began to suspect that her suggestion to bring Anne Sutton over had been a terrible mistake.
After Anne Sutton walked out, Chloe Chase hurried after her. "How could you talk to Dr. Linden like that?"
"Then how am I supposed to talk to her?" Anne Sutton looked at Chloe Chase. "Like you, just sucking up all the time? That’s your job, not mine."
Chloe Chase said patiently, "In the Linden Family, there is only Ethan Linden, no Nathan Fawcett. Since you’re going to live here, you have to learn to follow the rules."
"Hah..." Anne Sutton said. "Who made that rule? Dr. Linden? Just because she decrees it, everyone has to respect her opinion? Have any of you ever thought about Nathan Fawcett’s feelings?"
Chloe Chase said, "Nathan himself thinks so too. You can’t just ignore his wishes, can you?"
"Did he tell you he wants to be Ethan Linden?"
"..."
Chloe Chase felt that if this continued, it wouldn’t just be Dr. Linden—she herself would be infuriated to death by Anne Sutton.
Just then, someone walked over. "Mrs. Chase."
Anne Sutton looked up and saw Caleb Summers standing in the doorway.
Seeing him, Anne Sutton froze for a moment.
Caleb Summers glanced at Anne Sutton and raised an eyebrow, but he didn’t greet her. He directly called Chloe Chase away.
Before he left, he shot Anne Sutton a look full of pity. ’Poor thing. If I hadn’t intervened, she would’ve been chewed out completely.’
Anne Sutton hadn’t expected Caleb Summers to know Chloe Chase.
But she didn’t ask any questions. Since they had business to discuss, she went to start her shift.
One of Anna Linden’s protégés was transferring back to a hospital in her hometown, so Anne Sutton was taking her place.
She had just finished the handover when she saw Caleb Summers approaching.
Seeing Anne Sutton, Caleb Summers grinned. "Not going to thank me?"
"Thank you?" His sudden comment left Anne Sutton bewildered.
Caleb Summers said, "If it weren’t for me just now, wouldn’t you have gotten chewed out?"
Anne Sutton: "Thank you."
’He seems to have misunderstood something, but he meant well, after all.’
Anne Sutton looked at Caleb Summers and asked, "What brings you to the hospital?"
"I was about to ask you the same thing," Caleb Summers said. "You’re a doctor here?"
Anne Sutton nodded. "Yes."
"I’ve never seen you before." He was quite familiar with the hospital.
After all, he and Ethan Linden had grown up together.
He had known Anna Linden since they were kids, and he was familiar with the people around her.
Anne Sutton said, "I just started not long ago."
"I see," Caleb Summers said.
"So, are you here to see a doctor?" Anne Sutton looked him over but couldn’t see anything wrong with him.
Caleb Summers said, "No, I’m here looking for someone."
"Looking for someone? Who?"
"I heard a woman named Anne Sutton started at your hospital recently. Do you know her?"
Anne Sutton: "..."
’Oh, I know her!’
’I know her all too well!’
’But why is Caleb Summers looking for me?’
Anne Sutton asked, "Why are you looking for Anne Sutton?"
Caleb Summers said, "That woman is bad news. I came to check her out. Hmph!"
When he mentioned Anne Sutton, the expression on his face looked a little terrifying.
He clearly had malicious intent.
Seeing him like this, how could Anne Sutton possibly dare to reveal who she was?
Anne Sutton asked, "What did she do to you?"
’Other than having hot pot with him yesterday, I have no idea how I could have possibly offended him!’
"You know Ethan Linden, right?" Caleb Summers said. "She’s Ethan’s woman!"
’A woman who’s deluded enough to think she can use a child to help Nathan Fawcett.’
’Given the current situation in the Linden Family, being with this woman will only be detrimental to Nathan Fawcett.’
’He couldn’t persuade Nathan Fawcett, so his only option was to target the woman herself.’
’If Nathan Fawcett wasn’t willing to be the bad guy, then he would do it for him!’
’That’s what best friends do—they look out for each other’s futures.’
Anne Sutton looked at Caleb Summers’s intimidating expression. From the looks of it, he was very close to Ethan Linden.
’So he came looking for me just because he knows I’m connected to Ethan?’
Suddenly, images of murder and kidnapping flashed through Anne Sutton’s mind.
This strengthened her resolve not to let him find out her name.
Anne Sutton lied, "She didn’t come to the hospital today."
"She didn’t?" Caleb Summers had been filled with righteous indignation, but upon hearing this, his expression softened slightly. "She’s lucky! The next time I see her, I won’t let her off the hook."
Anne Sutton: "..."
’My luck is just the worst!’
She said to Caleb Summers, "I have to get back to work."
Caleb Summers said, "Alright. Next time Anne Sutton comes to the hospital, remember to let me know. I’ll come find her."
After saying that, he even added Anne Sutton on WeChat.
Anne Sutton: "..."
’Thank goodness my WeChat profile uses a screen name he won’t recognize.’
After leaving the hospital, Caleb Summers went straight to the office.
He walked into Nathan Fawcett’s office, saw him busy at work, and called out, "Ethan!"
Nathan Fawcett shot him a look. "I was looking for you just now, but you weren’t around. Where’d you go?"
"I wasn’t feeling well, so I went to the hospital for a check-up." Caleb Summers sat down. "I’ve taken a liking to a girl recently."
"And?"
"How long do you think it’ll take me to win her over?" Caleb Summers asked, looking at Nathan Fawcett with a mysterious air.
Nathan Fawcett replied, "So, which man’s wife is about to suffer this time?"
