Ian was in the living room, happily watching SpongeBob SquarePants.

Nathan Fawcett stood at the doorway, looking at Anne Sutton.

Anne Sutton said, "What are you doing in here? This kitchen isn’t big to begin with. You standing there is blocking the way."

Nathan Fawcett asked, "You’re with Justin Shields now?"

"..." Anne Sutton looked at him. "What, you can go on blind dates with other people, but I can’t be with Justin Shields? You forbade me from being with him before. You have no reason to object now, do you?"

Nathan Fawcett said, "Don’t you hate the Shields family?"

"I hate you, too," Anne Sutton glanced at him and said. "If it weren’t for Ian, I wouldn’t even want to see you."

Nathan Fawcett said, "All you do is talk about Ian. I bet you don’t actually care about him at all! Your head is just full of other men! If Ian hadn’t come over today, you’d probably be with Justin Shields again! You’re so casual, aren’t you."

"..." Anne Sutton stared at Nathan Fawcett. When she heard him call her casual, her anger flared. "You’re calling *me* casual? Does that Ms. Yorke of yours know you’re here? What right do you have to stand here and mock me? Mind your own business! Even if I get together with Justin Shields, you have no say in it."

Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton, remembering what she had said earlier that day...

She had said the abortion wasn’t her choice.

’I originally came here to get a clear answer,’ he thought. ’I had a feeling I might have misunderstood her!’

’But looking at her attitude now...’ His temper flared. ’She *is* that kind of woman. I didn’t misunderstand her at all. I don’t want to talk about it anymore!’

Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton and said, "I shouldn’t have brought Ian to see you."

"..." Anne Sutton looked at him. "Is that the only way you know how to threaten me? I’ll tell you this right now: for Ian’s sake, I won’t expose your business. But if you ever stop me from seeing him, I will make a scene. And I won’t care what happens to you then!"

Nathan Fawcett stared at her. "Anne Sutton, are you threatening me?"

Anne Sutton said, "You’re the one who threatened me first."

Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "You just never back down, do you."

"That’s because you used to think I was a pushover!" Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett. The thought of how she had felt guilty toward him all these years, while he was living a carefree life here with their son, made her heart ache with resentment.

Anne Sutton said to Nathan Fawcett, "You said you were just dropping Ian off. He’s here now, so you can leave."

Nathan Fawcett laughed. "You get to be with my son, but you want to kick me out. You’ve really got it all figured out, haven’t you."

Anne Sutton glanced at Ian on the sofa. The little guy was watching the cartoon intently.

Nathan Fawcett’s gaze followed hers.

’The TV at home is bigger, and the whole environment is better,’ Nathan thought, ’but Ian still insisted on coming to Anne Sutton’s place to watch.’

Anne Sutton said to Nathan Fawcett, "It’s all your fault that our Ian hasn’t had a mother by his side all these years. He almost thought Stella Shields was his mom. Nathan Fawcett, you bear a great deal of the responsibility. You should be grateful I’m not trying to get revenge on you."

Nathan Fawcett said, "If you want to see Ian in the future, we’ll have to keep seeing each other. Are you sure you want to treat me like an enemy?"

"You’re the one who came here looking for trouble! Weren’t you the one who just called me casual?"

Anne Sutton shot him a glare. Nathan Fawcett looked at her, about to retort, when the hand Anne was using to stir-fry brushed against the hot wok, and she burned herself.

The burn made her cry out in pain.

The moment he saw what happened, Nathan Fawcett pulled her over, stuck her hand under the faucet, and turned on the cold water.

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett. He was staring intently at her hand, but he was still spouting infuriating words. "See? That’s what you get for being so sharp-tongued."

His words successfully extinguished the flicker of gratitude she had just felt.

Ian walked over, concerned. "Mommy, are you okay?"

Nathan Fawcett glanced at his son in the doorway and said, "She’s fine."

Anne Sutton said, "It’s nothing. You can go back to watching TV."

Ian looked at the two of them suspiciously. He stood to the side and said to Nathan Fawcett, "Daddy."

"What is it?" Nathan Fawcett had already let go of Anne Sutton. Because she had rinsed it with water right away, the burn wasn’t serious. Thankfully, she was okay.

Nathan Fawcett looked at Ian and asked curiously.

Ian said, "Will you marry Mommy? Please?"

"..." Nathan Fawcett was stunned for a moment. "Why are you bringing that up?" he asked.

He glanced uncomfortably at the woman behind him. ’Marriage?’

’Even if I wanted to, she’d have to agree first!’

’Her heart belongs to someone else. Forcing her to marry me would be unfair to her!’

’There’s no way she would be willing!’

’Especially now. She treats me like an enemy and can’t even stand the sight of me.’

’From her attitude, I can’t see even a hint of affection for me.’

’You can’t force love,’ he thought. ’I don’t want to force it.’

Ian said, "If you marry Mommy, we can all live together! Summer’s dad married her mom, so they get to live together every day. If you marry my mommy, she can come back and live with us."

Anne Sutton stood beside Nathan Fawcett, and her scalp prickled as she heard Ian’s words.

After hearing what Ian said, Nathan Fawcett glanced at Anne Sutton, his expression complicated.

Seeing him look at her like that, Anne Sutton was afraid he’d get the wrong idea and quickly explained, "He said that all on his own, it has nothing to do with me! I didn’t teach him to say that! The last thing I want is to marry you."

Nathan Fawcett retorted, "...Of course you don’t want to marry me. How could I not know? I’m not good enough for you, Miss Sutton! You have plenty of other men in your heart! I’m not interested in competing with them."

"You’re a real expert at slander," Anne Sutton said to Nathan Fawcett. "That’s right, just keep slinging mud at me!"

She looked up and saw Ian standing to the side, staring at her and Nathan Fawcett. Anne Sutton felt it really wasn’t right to say these things in front of a child.

She stopped and said to Ian, "Sweetheart, go wash your hands. The food will be ready soon."

She walked back to the stove and continued to cook.

Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "Is your hand okay?"

’She just burned it, but she doesn’t seem to mind at all and is already cooking again.’

Anne Sutton said, "What, are you going to do it? Do you even know how to cook?"

’He’s someone who can’t even take care of himself!’

’If I let him cook, would the food even be edible?’

Hearing her words, Nathan Fawcett’s mouth twitched. ’I can’t believe she’s looking down on me!’

’Although... it was true he didn’t actually know how.’

...

Once the meal was ready, Anne Sutton brought the dishes out to the table. Ian had already washed his hands.

Nathan Fawcett sat down and said to Ian, "We’re heading home after we finish eating."

Ian said, "But I want to live with Mommy."
