Chapter 236: Then You Must Not Lie to Me
"..." Nathan Fawcett looked at him and said, "Don’t you have class tomorrow? Even if you don’t, I still have to work! Besides, your mother doesn’t welcome me."
"..." Hearing this, Anne Sutton’s lip twitched. "I’m surprised you’re so self-aware. It’s true, I don’t welcome you."
She hadn’t even set out a bowl for him, having only made enough for Ian.
Seeing that she hadn’t gotten a bowl for him, Nathan Fawcett was a little displeased. "Why didn’t you get a bowl for me?"
"Didn’t you just say it yourself? That I don’t welcome you?"
"..." Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "Your talent for getting on people’s nerves is truly first-class."
"I’m nothing compared to Mr. Linden."
Nathan Fawcett said, "Fine, I didn’t want to eat anyway."
With that, he stood up, walked over to the sofa, and sat down. He would wait for Ian to finish eating and then take him away.
Anne Sutton served Ian some food. He ate happily. "Mommy, did you make all this just for Ian?"
Anne Sutton nodded.
Ian said, "I love you so much! Daddy used to always steal my food, but now it’s all for me. I’m so happy!"
Nathan Fawcett: "..."
He never imagined this was the shameless, scoundrel-like image he had in his son’s mind.
Nathan Fawcett said nothing, letting the two of them bad-mouth him over there.
He sat to the side, idly fiddling with his phone.
...
When Ian finished eating, Anne Sutton went to wash the dishes. Nathan Fawcett walked over and stood in the doorway, watching her.
Noticing him watching her, Anne Sutton said, "What is it now?"
"Is your hand alright?"
Anne Sutton glanced up at her hand. The spot where she’d been burned stung a little, but it wasn’t a big deal. "It’s fine," Anne said.
Nathan Fawcett said, "I’m taking Ian home."
"..." Hearing that he was taking Ian, Anne Sutton glanced at her son sitting on the sofa and began washing the dishes faster. "I’ll see you out."
Nathan Fawcett started to say she didn’t have to, but seeing her rush to finish the dishes, he decided to wait.
Nathan Fawcett carried Ian into the elevator with Anne Sutton following them. Ian, draped over his father’s shoulder, said to Anne, "Mommy, why don’t you come home with us?"
"..." Anne Sutton reached out and squeezed his soft little cheek. "I can’t, sweetie. You go home with your dad."
"Mommy, if you come home with us, you can stay in my room, I don’t mind. Daddy, can we take Mommy home with us, please?"
Nathan Fawcett didn’t say a word.
He was still a little angry.
Besides, he didn’t know how to respond anyway.
Ian was too young to understand a lot of things. His words were innocent and endearing!
’But his relationship with Anne wasn’t that simple.’
’His family’s disapproval was one thing, but more importantly, she clearly had no interest either!’
’He didn’t want to make a fool of himself.’
When Nathan Fawcett didn’t answer, Ian asked in disappointment, "Why aren’t you saying anything?"
Standing to the side, Anne Sutton told Ian, "Don’t make things difficult for your dad. Mommy isn’t going back. This is my home now!"
"Why?" Ian asked. "Everyone else’s mommy and daddy live together."
Looking at the little boy, Anne Sutton felt a sting in her eyes.
’If only I’d known that Ian was my child with Nathan Fawcett,’ she thought. ’I never would have divorced him, no matter what.’
’At least things wouldn’t have ended up like this!’
’At least I wouldn’t have to walk on eggshells around him just to see Ian.’
Nathan Fawcett remained silent.
Downstairs, the driver was waiting for them.
Seeing Ian still talking to Anne Sutton, reluctant to leave, Nathan reminded him, "Alright, let’s go home."
With that, he put Ian in the car.
The moment Ian was seated in the car, he suddenly burst into tears.
It was nighttime, and the wind was a bit chilly.
Anne Sutton looked at Ian and said, "Ian, Mommy will come see you in a couple of days. Don’t cry."
Ian sat in his seat with red-rimmed eyes. Although Anne tried to console him, he still cried heartbreakingly.
Seeing the little boy in such a state, Anne couldn’t hold back any longer, and her own tears started to fall.
Nathan Fawcett stood to the side, watching this scene, feeling as if he had become the villain.
He glanced at the tearful Anne Sutton and said, "Why are you crying too? You’re just like a child. Go on back upstairs."
With that, he got into the car and looked at Ian. "Alright, stop crying! If you keep this up, I won’t bring you over next time."
Then, he shut the car door and glanced at Anne Sutton.
Anne Sutton stood forlornly by the road as the night wind whipped through her long hair. For a moment, Nathan Fawcett felt a pang of regret.
Still, he told the driver to go.
Anne Sutton stood by the road, watching the car drive away, then suddenly sank into a squat.
’She didn’t know what to do anymore!’
’Perhaps she never should have married Nathan Fawcett. If she hadn’t, there wouldn’t be a child, and she wouldn’t be so consumed with longing now...’
In the car, Ian cried for what felt like an eternity. The little boy’s emotions were a storm; he had been perfectly fine when he was with Anne, but now his tears wouldn’t stop.
Nathan Fawcett looked at him and said helplessly, "Haven’t you cried enough yet?"
Ian cried, "You’re a bad person! You don’t want my mommy anymore! I don’t want to be with you! I want to be with my mommy."
Hearing his son’s words, Nathan Fawcett asked, "So now that you have a mommy, I’m not your daddy anymore?"
Those words were a knife to his fatherly heart.
’From the moment I first saw him in the hospital, I’ve poured my entire heart into this boy,’ Nathan thought bitterly. ’And for what? Now, this little guy only remembers Anne Sutton—the woman who didn’t even want him!’
Ian shot back, "Then why won’t you agree to marry her? Why? Is it because you like other ladies? No wonder Mommy won’t come home with us. It’s all your fault!"
Nathan Fawcett looked at the little boy. "Your mother is the one who doesn’t want you! She abandoned you, that’s why I was the one who brought you home."
"That’s not true!" Ian yelled. "My mommy loves me the most! She loves me so much, and she’s super nice to Ian. All you ever do is say bad things about her!"
The more Ian spoke, the more upset he became.
Nathan Fawcett looked at the little boy, utterly speechless.
But Ian was too young to reason with. Nathan Fawcett reached out, ruffled Ian’s hair, and his tone softened. "Do you really want Daddy and Mommy to be together?"
Ian nodded. "Of course! I love Daddy, and I love Mommy a lot, too. I want to be with her! When I can’t see her, I get really, really sad. When you’re both not around, I’m so heartbroken! She’s the bestest person to Ian."
Nathan Fawcett looked at Ian and said, "I’ll talk to her. I’ll ask her to marry me."
"Really?" Hearing Nathan Fawcett’s words, Ian instantly stopped crying.
Nathan Fawcett said, "Of course it’s true. But you’re not allowed to cry anymore. If you start crying again, I’m going to get angry."
"..." Ian looked at him. "Then you’d better not be lying to me!"
