Chapter 197: How Dare Charles Prescott Provoke Him
After he spoke, he fell in behind Anne Sutton.
Anne Sutton wanted to walk out of the residential complex to make it easier to hail a taxi.
The complex was quite large, and it was a long walk.
Charles Prescott didn’t leave by car either. He simply followed behind her, his eyes fixed on her retreating figure...
He thought back to the old days. ’How wonderful it would be if things were still the way they used to be.’
She would still be his fiancée, and he could protect her openly and legitimately. Not like now, where he desperately wanted to treat her well, only to be rejected.
After walking for a little while, Anne Sutton’s phone rang. She glanced at the screen and answered, "Hello."
Nathan Fawcett’s voice came through the phone. "Where are you?"
Her leg hadn’t fully healed. She had said she was going to the hospital to see her mother but still hadn’t returned.
Hearing his question, Anne Sutton replied, "I’m out right now."
"Where? I’ll come pick you up."
"...That’s not necessary."
"Send me your location!"
Anne Sutton was speechless.
She hung up and obediently sent him her location.
By the time she walked out of the complex, she saw Nathan Fawcett’s car already parked at the gate. He had arrived much faster than she’d expected.
Nathan Fawcett’s eyes darkened as he watched her limp out of the complex, with Charles Prescott trailing behind her.
When Anne Sutton saw Nathan Fawcett, he quickly walked over to her. Looking at her, he asked, "What are you doing here?"
Charles Prescott walked over, looked at Nathan Fawcett, and said, "Uncle."
Nathan Fawcett looked at him, then glanced at Anne Sutton before asking Charles Prescott, "Why are you here?"
Charles Prescott said, "Anne ran into some trouble, so I came to keep her company."
"Whatever trouble she’s in, what does that have to do with you?" Nathan Fawcett frowned.
He was not at all pleased to see Charles Prescott with Anne Sutton.
He kept telling himself that it was her freedom to be with any man she chose.
But it still felt wrong. It grated on him.
Charles Prescott didn’t answer. He just looked at Anne Sutton and said, "Anne, you should head back and get some rest. Don’t worry too much about your family’s problems. No matter what happens, I’m here for you."
He said it with deliberate thoughtfulness, then turned and left.
Once he was gone, Nathan Fawcett turned to Anne Sutton. "What happened to you?"
"It’s nothing," Anne Sutton said. "Let’s go back."
With that, she started to walk forward.
Nathan Fawcett’s car was parked nearby.
But Nathan Fawcett grabbed her wrist, wanting a clearer explanation.
Anne Sutton looked up at him. She was in a terrible mood, and her eyes were filled with an immense sadness.
Nathan Fawcett had been about to scold her, but seeing her like this, the words caught in his throat.
He said, "Forget it. Get in the car."
With that, he reached out to steady her. "Your foot hasn’t healed. Why did you walk all the way out here? How long were you walking?"
"Not long," Anne Sutton said. "I just walked from inside. Their complex is just a little big."
She’d been a little surprised by it.
Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said, "Couldn’t you have taken a car?"
"Charles Prescott’s car?" Anne Sutton said. "I didn’t want him to drive me home."
Once they were in the car, Nathan Fawcett noticed her listless expression. The weather was a bit chilly, and after being out in the wind for so long, her hands were ice-cold.
He brought over a blanket and draped it over her. Taking her hand in his, he asked, "How did you end up with Charles Prescott?"
"My dad bought a house here for his mistress, and Charles Prescott brought me to see it," Anne Sutton said. "That mistress went to the hospital today. My mother found out about everything. My family is gone."
With things having come to this, the Sutton Family was completely finished. It would never be the same again.
Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett just looked at her.
Anne Sutton sadly buried her face in his chest. "It would be so much better if we could stay children forever. Then we wouldn’t have to understand or know about so many things."
Unlike now...
’This is just too painful!’
’I just can’t understand my own father.’
’How could he do something like that!’
Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said, "If it’s gone, it’s gone. People have to leave the nest when they grow up. The Sutton Family may be gone, but don’t you still have me and Ian?"
Hearing Nathan Fawcett’s words, Anne Sutton closed her eyes as tears silently streamed down her face.
His comforting words only made her want to cry more.
He and Ian truly gave her the feeling of a family.
’But I also know that none of this will last.’
...
Nathan Fawcett didn’t disturb her for the rest of the drive.
He was furious about seeing her with Charles Prescott, but looking at Anne Sutton in her current state, he couldn’t bring himself to say a single word of reprimand.
’As for Charles Prescott, though...’
’That bastard actually had the gall to provoke me!’
’Heh...’
’Unbelievable!’
...
After leaving Anne Sutton, Charles Prescott sat in his car, looking to be in a very good mood.
Grace, sitting in the passenger seat, glanced at him and said, "You seem very happy, President Prescott?"
Charles Prescott glanced at her. "I suppose."
’Recalling what he’d just said in front of Nathan, he felt like he had scored a point.’
’As long as I’m good to Anne, even if she doesn’t fall for it, Ethan Linden will eventually fight with her over it and then dump her!’
’After all, no man can stand being cuckolded!’
The car stopped in front of the Prescott residence. Charles Prescott got out, with Grace following behind him. As they reached the door, they saw President Sterling rushing over. He looked at Charles Prescott anxiously and said, "President Prescott, you’re finally back!"
Seeing his frantic expression, Charles Prescott asked, "What is it?"
President Sterling said, "I’m ruined! You have to help me."
Charles Prescott looked at President Sterling with a complicated expression. He walked through the door, and President Sterling followed, explaining his situation as they went.
By the time they were inside, he had heard the gist of President Sterling’s situation.
Charles Prescott sat down and looked at President Sterling. "That damn woman," President Sterling said, "she took my money, and now she’s screwing me over like this! I don’t know where she got that video, but it’s all over the internet now. I’m a dead man."
"You really didn’t force her?" Charles Prescott looked at President Sterling, his expression skeptical.
President Sterling said, "Of course not! I’m not that kind of person! She was the one who initiated it; it had nothing to do with me. She’s just a shameless, money-grubbing woman."
Charles Prescott didn’t believe him. "If she was the one who initiated it, why are you so afraid?"
"I tried to contact her today, but she ignored me. She used to be so timid; she would never have dared to do something like this. I suspect she’s been bought off by Ethan Linden! It must be because I spoke ill of him before, and now he holds a grudge! That’s why he’s coming after me. President Prescott, you can’t just leave me to hang!"
"Don’t worry, I’ll help you," Charles Prescott said to President Sterling. "Go home for now. As long as you were framed, your name will be cleared."
"..." President Sterling looked at Charles Prescott. "Alright, President Prescott, I’ll wait to hear from you. You can’t abandon me."
After placating him, Charles Prescott said to Grace, "See President Sterling out."
Grace nodded and returned after seeing President Sterling out.
She stood to one side, watching Charles Prescott. "What should we do now? President Prescott, you’re not really going to protect him, are you?"
