Chapter 224: He’s Back
Mia Shaw stood up, walked over to him, and pressed herself close. "Have you missed me?"
Charles Prescott looked at the woman before him and smiled, a captivating smile.
Mia Shaw said, "What are you smiling about? I know you’ve been in a bad mood because of what happened to the Fawcett Family. I’ve been worried about you. That Anne Sutton hasn’t been giving you a hard time, has she? She used to hate you so much."
Charles Prescott said, "It’s fine. Even if she did, it wouldn’t matter. I’m used to it."
"..." Mia Shaw reached out, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Charles, why don’t you meet my parents again? They’ve been pressuring me to get married lately, but you’re the only one in my heart. I want to be with you. I don’t want to marry anyone else."
Even though she knew he had Leo, she didn’t mind.
He was just a child.
As long as she could be with him, she didn’t care about anything else.
Faced with her magnanimity, Charles Prescott showed little interest. "I’m not looking to get married right now," he said coolly.
"Why?" Mia Shaw asked. "What’s so bad about getting married? I already told my parents about Leo. I told them you and Sylvia Warren aren’t together."
Charles Prescott removed her hands from his body. "You should head home for today. I want to get some rest."
Mia Shaw looked at his cold demeanor. "Do you not love me anymore?"
’Things were going so well between us before.’
’That time before the engagement.’
’But now...’
She could feel his disdain for her.
She thought that during their time apart, he would be thinking of her, just as she was thinking of him...
But it turned out she was the only one doing the thinking.
Charles Prescott glanced at Mia Shaw. "I thought you already knew."
Mia Shaw was speechless.
She looked at Charles Prescott sadly. His words were a slap in the face.
She wanted to say more, but it felt too humiliating, so she just turned and left.
...
That evening, Nathan Fawcett returned.
He had booked an international flight earlier and had taken the opportunity to handle some business abroad, only just now returning.
As he walked in the door, he saw that Stella Shields was still awake. "Nathan," she said upon seeing him enter.
The two of them hadn’t been in touch for a long time, not since the incident in Westhaven.
Seeing him now, Stella Shields still wanted to stay on good terms with him.
Nathan Fawcett didn’t even glance at her and headed straight upstairs. Stella Shields called out, "I have something to tell you. It’s about Anne Sutton."
Hearing the name "Anne Sutton," Nathan Fawcett finally stopped.
He turned back, gave her a look, and said coldly, "Speak."
Stella Shields said, "Anne Sutton came by a few days ago."
Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett was a little surprised. ’She came to Veridia?’
’What for?’
Stella Shields said, "She knows Ian is her son. She said she’s coming to take him back."
Originally, Stella Shields hadn’t wanted to say anything. She never wanted to see Nathan Fawcett and Anne Sutton have any contact ever again.
But Anne Sutton’s attitude last time was too frightening.
Anna Linden might not care about Nathan Fawcett, but she couldn’t help but care.
If Nathan’s identity was exposed and he was forced to leave the Linden Family because of Anne Sutton causing trouble, that was not an outcome she wanted to see.
So, it was better to tell Nathan Fawcett ahead of time.
"..." Nathan Fawcett looked at Stella Shields in surprise. ’She said Anne knows about the child?’
Nathan Fawcett asked, "What else did she say?"
"She said she’s going to take Ian away. And she also said... if you don’t agree, she’ll expose your identity and tell everyone that you’re Nathan Fawcett. There must be a lot of people at the company keeping an eye on you right now! You need to be careful."
After hearing her out, Nathan Fawcett went upstairs.
Once in his room, he took off his jacket, set it aside, picked up his phone, and called Anne Sutton.
...
Anne Sutton had just lain down on the sofa when her phone rang. Seeing it was a call from Nathan Fawcett, she froze for a moment before swiping to answer.
"Hello."
’He disappeared for so many days, and now he finally shows up.’
Nathan Fawcett said, "You came to Veridia?"
Anne Sutton replied, "That’s right! You didn’t want me to come?"
"..." He could tell from her tone that she was very displeased.
Nathan Fawcett asked, "Are you still here?"
"I had my job transferred. I’ll be working here from now on, until you give Ian back to me."
"..." Hearing her words, Nathan Fawcett fell silent for a moment. He had thought everything would be over after their divorce.
’I never expected... that she would find out about the child and even move here.’
Nathan Fawcett said, "I have meetings all day tomorrow, so I’ll probably finish very late. Send me your address, and I’ll come find you the day after tomorrow."
"..." Anne Sutton listened to Nathan Fawcett. His tone was so calm, and she didn’t know how he managed it.
Even though they were on the phone, Anne Sutton’s voice began to break. "Nathan Fawcett, why did you lie to me?"
Anyone could lie to her, but for him to lie to her like this was what hurt the most.
Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett didn’t say anything.
After a moment, he finally said to Anne Sutton, "It’s all in the past."
"Maybe it’s in the past for you," Anne Sutton said. "You knew perfectly well how much I cared about our child. But you kept lying to me, and it was such a cruel lie!"
Her mood had been quite calm these past few days, but hearing his voice now, tears started to fall.
During the days she spent with him, she had grown very fond of him.
It was because she liked him that she cared so much about his attitude towards her!
She realized she had already given this man a place in her heart. And yet, in his world, she was just an insignificant woman, a mere tool who had given him a child.
He couldn’t even be bothered to tell her about their child.
Hearing her words, Nathan Fawcett said, "Get some sleep. You’ve had too much to drink."
Even over the phone, he could tell she had been drinking.
After hanging up with Anne Sutton, Nathan Fawcett put down his phone and stared at the screen, his feelings complicated.
...
The next morning, Nathan Fawcett came downstairs. Anna Linden was still at home.
The mother and son hadn’t seen each other in a long time.
Anna Linden saw him and said, "You’re back?"
Nathan Fawcett nodded. "I went to see Grandfather."
"How is he?"
"He’s doing all right," Nathan Fawcett said. "He’s been resting for a while and seems to be in much better health."
His grandfather’s health had been poor before, which was why he had stepped away from work to rest.
Anna Linden said, "Sit."
Nathan Fawcett sat down.
Anna Linden said, "About Anne Sutton, I don’t know if you’ve heard yet. She found out about Ian and came looking for you. You need to handle this."
Nathan Fawcett glanced at his mother. "Stella Shields told me last night. I’ll handle it."
Anna Linden looked at him and couldn’t help but complain, "I told you not to go back then, but you insisted. And look what’s happened! She’s latched onto you! From the looks of it, she’s trying to use the child to marry you."
Nathan Fawcett said, "You’re overthinking it. She’s not that kind of person."
Although in his own heart, he also considered Anne Sutton to be a rather contemptible person, hearing his mother say it still made him a little uncomfortable.
