Chapter 225: She Was Taken by Anna Linden
Anna Linden said, "What kind of person do you think she is, then? Have you lost your memory or something? Have you forgotten how we got Ian back in the first place? Do I need to remind you?"
Nathan Fawcett said, "That’s enough. It’s all in the past, let’s not bring it up again."
"I’m the one who doesn’t want to bring it up, but I’m afraid your head isn’t on straight. Nathan, you always think that I, as your mother, don’t care about you enough, that I favor Ethan. What I want to say is, I’m doing this for your own good! I hope you can find an outstanding woman, one who is worthy of you, a woman who can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you!
Instead of a bloodsucker like Anne Sutton, who only knows how to leech off men!
Your father’s values are all wrong. How can you stand the kind of woman he found for you?
We can let the past be the past. You were naive when you were around him, but I hope you’ll have a clearer head from now on. Don’t contact a woman like that ever again! I can understand if you don’t like Stella Shields, but Anne Sutton can absolutely never be your wife."
Nathan Fawcett sat to the side, listening. It was rare for his mother to speak to him like this. Even though her words sounded so high and mighty, they were likely just a pretext to stop him from seeing Anne Sutton.
But even if there was only a sliver of concern in her words, Nathan still felt a little happy.
As the two were talking, Ian came downstairs with the housekeeper. Upon seeing Nathan, his little face fell. "So you decided to come back, huh? You stinky dad!"
Seeing his son, Nathan’s survival instincts kicked into high gear as he explained, "I was away on business for a few days."
"Where’s Anne! Is she here?" Ian asked curiously.
Hearing this, Nathan glanced at Anna Linden across from him before telling Ian, "No."
"Why not?" Ian demanded. "I told you I didn’t want to come back! I want to be with Anne! You made me come back, and you even promised you’d bring her back! You didn’t bring her back! You’re a meanie."
Nathan watched his son’s fixation on Anne. Even though Ian was still little, he already knew she was his mother.
The little rascal was so young, yet his intuition was incredibly sharp.
He knew something even Anne herself didn’t.
Anna Linden sat to the side, looking at Ian. She wanted to say something, but then she glanced at Nathan. ’The child doesn’t know any better. It’s all Nathan’s fault. If he hadn’t taken Ian to Westhaven, none of this would have happened!’
With that thought, Anna Linden stood up and walked out.
Ian sat in his chair, looking at Nathan. "I’m asking you," he said, "when is my mommy coming back?"
Nathan looked at him and changed the subject. "Are you done with your lessons?"
"I don’t care," Ian said. "If my mommy doesn’t come, I’m not going to lessons anymore."
Nathan looked at the little rascal. "I’m having the housekeeper take you to the hospital for your shot in a bit. I have to go to work."
"Mommy’s not here, I don’t want to get a shot."
"..." Nathan looked at him and ruffled his hair. "Be a good boy, okay? Aren’t you supposed to be a good boy?"
"I’m not a good boy without my mommy! You’d better bring my mommy back right now, or you don’t have to come back ever again!"
Nathan put down his bowl and looked at the little guy. ’He could afford to offend anyone in the world, but he couldn’t afford to offend his own son!’
’I have meetings all day. I have no time at all.’
’I wonder how she’s doing after our call last night.’
Nathan said to the housekeeper, "Go ahead and take Ian to the hospital for his shot."
The housekeeper nodded. "Alright."
...
Since she had just moved, Anne Sutton hadn’t bought a car yet, so she took the subway to work that morning.
When she arrived at the hospital, Vera Wells was already there. Vera spotted her and rushed over excitedly. "Anne, honey! I have amazing news for you!"
"What amazing news?" Anne asked with a smile, seeing her friend’s excitement. "Did you win the lottery?"
"You’re the one who hit the jackpot!"
"I didn’t buy a ticket."
"No, not that," Vera said. "You won’t believe it! Your luck is incredible! You just transferred here, and it turns out Dr. Linden’s team was short-staffed. They specifically requested you!"
"Dr. Linden?" Anne froze, staring at Vera, wondering if she’d misheard.
Vera nodded. "Yep! Wasn’t she your idol? So many people would kill for a chance to learn on her team! How on earth did you get so lucky?"
"..." Anne fell silent. ’Anna Linden... she actually requested me for her team?’
Remembering what she’d said to Anna Linden at the Linden family home, Anne had a bad feeling.
’Is she planning to get revenge on me?’
Vera urged her, "You’d better get going!"
Anne’s stomach churned with anxiety, but she was in the hospital now—on Anna Linden’s turf. She had no choice but to follow orders.
She went upstairs to Anna Linden’s office.
She knocked. The door opened almost immediately. It was Chloe Chase. "You’re here," Chloe said upon seeing Anne. "Come on in."
’It’s like she was waiting for me.’
Anne took a deep breath and stepped inside. She saw Anna Linden was there, along with another hospital administrator, Vice Dean Troy Miller.
Anne had met the vice dean before; she had reported to him just yesterday.
Vice Dean Miller looked at her and said warmly, "Sutton, come on over. Let me introduce you. This is the star of our hospital, Professor Anna Linden."
Anne looked at Anna Linden. She sat there in a sharp suit, her hair pinned up in a sophisticated style.
She looked at Anne without a word, but her powerful aura was enough to make anyone uncomfortable.
Anne said, "I know."
’How could I not know?’
’We’ve met so many times!’
The real reason Anne had come was to ask why Anna Linden had requested her transfer.
Before she could ask, Vice Dean Miller spoke up. "Professor Linden happens to have an opening on her team, so you’ll be learning from her from now on. This is a rare opportunity, so make sure you make the most of it."
Vice Dean Miller, unaware of the history between them, was naturally happy for Anne.
Anne, however, knew all too well that she had just walked straight into the lion’s den.
She looked at Vice Dean Miller and asked, "Can I refuse?"
Hearing her serious tone, Vice Dean Miller paused for a second before laughing. "You must be joking. You’re a funny one. Just work hard under Professor Linden from now on. Anyone who trains under her comes out a force to be reckoned with."
Anna Linden was incredibly capable. Every doctor who trained with her went on to achieve great things.
That was why so many people were desperate to get on her team.
Just then, Vice Dean Miller’s phone rang. His days were always packed. He answered it, stood up, excused himself to the others in the office, and hurried out.
Once he was gone, Anne finally turned to Anna Linden. "Why did you have me transferred here? You can’t possibly want to see me."
