Anna Linden said, "You should feel honored. This is a rare opportunity."

Anne Sutton said, "Dr. Linden wouldn’t have called me here just to use her position to carry out a personal vendetta, would she?"

Anna Linden didn’t deny it. "If you’re chickening out, you can leave right now. I won’t force you. But if you want to stay at this hospital, you have no other choice."

Forget this hospital—even back in Westhaven, a single word from Anna Linden could ruin Anne Sutton’s career.

That was the kind of influence she wielded in this field.

Anne Sutton looked at her and said, "Don’t worry. If you think you can drive me away like this, you’re mistaken!"

She was already prepared to stay here!

So, she had no intention of leaving.

At least, she wouldn’t leave until she got to the bottom of things with Ian!

Anna Linden said, "Good. I hope you can stick it out. Don’t disappoint me."

With that, she ordered Chloe Chase, "You can take her now."

"..." Chloe Chase nodded and led Anne Sutton out the door. She glanced at Anne and sighed. "Honestly, couldn’t you have just stayed in Westhaven and lived your life? You got everything you wanted, so why did you have to come here? I remember telling you that you and Nathan were impossible. You said you understood back then."

Anne Sutton’s expression was grim. "Thank you for the warning, but there are some things I just can’t wrap my head around."

Chloe Chase glanced at her. "Let me put it this way: there’s really no need for you to offend Dr. Linden. You must like this job, right? Isn’t your career important to you?"

"Of course it’s important," Anne Sutton said. "I’ve wanted to be a doctor ever since I was a little girl. It’s my dream. But right now, I can’t turn my back on my child."

"..." Seeing that she couldn’t persuade her, Chloe Chase said no more. She took Anne Sutton to get registered and assigned her duties.

As the newest member of the team, Anne Sutton had far more work than she did before.

Back in Westhaven, she could see her own patients, had an assistant, and even her own team. But here, on Anna Linden’s team, she was just a newcomer.

Not to mention, Anna Linden was intentionally trying to push her out.

She was assigned all the most grueling tasks.

Someone was supposed to take over her shift at noon, but lunchtime came and went, and still, no one showed up.

It wasn’t until late afternoon, almost the end of the day, that someone finally came to relieve her.

Anne Sutton had been running around all day and was exhausted. As she returned in her protective suit, she saw the nanny who had been at the Fawcett Residence.

After the nanny came here with Ian, she started working for the Linden family.

She was the one Nathan Fawcett had originally hired to look after Ian. Anne had thought at the time that this way, the nanny could cook for Ian, and she could rest easy even when she wasn’t by his side.

Seeing the nanny rush past her in a panic, Anne Sutton called out to her.

The nanny stopped and glanced at Anne Sutton. Because Anne was wearing a protective suit that covered her completely, she didn’t recognize her at first.

Anne Sutton pulled off her hood, looked at her, and said, "It’s me."

"Ma’am." The nanny was shocked. "It’s you! Why are you here? You didn’t even tell us you were coming."

Anne Sutton said, "I went to the Linden family’s home a couple of days ago, but I didn’t see you."

"Weren’t you in Westhaven? What brings you here?"

"It’s a long story. I’ll be working here from now on."

"That’s wonderful!" the nanny said. "Then Young Master Ian can come and see you whenever he wants. He’s been thinking about you every day since he got back."

A sense of comfort washed over Anne Sutton. "Really?"

’That must be the bond between a mother and her child. Unlike Nathan Fawcett, her son actually had a heart.’

The nanny nodded, then remembered what she was doing. "Yes. Oh, I can’t talk right now, I have to go find the young master!"

"Find him? He’s here too?"

"I brought him to the hospital for a shot today, and... I looked away for a second and he ran off. I don’t know where he’s gone."

This scene was all too familiar to Anne Sutton.

The little guy seemed to have a habit of throwing fits at the hospital.

...

The nanny’s phone rang. She answered it and said, "I’m on my way."

Feeling uneasy, Anne Sutton followed her.

She followed the nanny and saw Anna Linden, who spotted the nanny and began to scold her sternly. "How could you be so careless? What if he got lost in a hospital this crowded? You can’t even look after one child properly."

The nanny lowered her head under the verbal assault. "I’m sorry."

Anna Linden’s gaze fell on Anne Sutton. "What are you doing here?" she asked with disgust.

Anna Linden didn’t want Anne Sutton to know they had lost the child.

Even without Anne Sutton, they could take good care of the boy.

Hadn’t they taken good care of him for the past few years?

Were they suddenly helpless just because Anne wasn’t around?

...

Anne Sutton looked at her but didn’t answer, simply turning and walking away.

She went to change first. Having skipped lunch, she was starving.

But when she thought of Ian, Anne Sutton still felt a pang of worry.

She decided to go look for him herself.

’If he got lost in the hospital, he has to be here somewhere.’

"Ian!"

Anne Sutton called his name as she walked.

Before long, she spotted him in a corridor.

Ian had been hiding, but when he heard Anne Sutton’s voice, he ran out from behind the fire escape door. "Mom, it’s you!"

Anne Sutton looked at the silly boy. "Why are you running off again?"

Ian pouted. "They wouldn’t let me see you, so I hid. Did you finally come to see me?"

He walked up to Anne Sutton and hugged her leg. "Mom, please don’t leave me again, okay?"

He hadn’t seen Anne Sutton for days, and he was miserable.

He kept hearing Stella Shields say bad things about Anne Sutton, and he wasn’t stupid. From the way they talked, he got the feeling he would never be able to see Anne again.

That’s why he’d decided to hide and make them worry.

Anne Sutton gazed at the little boy before her, and tears instantly welled up and streamed down her face.

’All that time I lived with Ian, I never knew he was my child. Only now do I realize that Ian is the baby I’ve been longing for all this time. No wonder I adored him from the moment I first saw him.’

Anne Sutton said, "Don’t worry. I’ll never leave you again."

"Really?" Ian looked at her, a little doubtful.

Anne Sutton nodded, wiping away her tears. "I mean it. Have you eaten yet? Let’s go get something to eat!"

"No," Ian said. "When you’re not here, their food doesn’t taste good. I don’t like it."

Anne Sutton said, "Then let’s go home and eat! Mommy will cook for you."

Seeing Ian again, Anne Sutton felt completely different than she had before.

’Before, whenever I was kind to Ian, I felt like I was being greedy. But now I realize, I *should* be good to him. I owe him. I owe him so much for all these years I wasn’t by his side.’

’Whenever I think about it, I’m reminded of Nathan Fawcett. He’s really... so detestable!’
