Chapter 284: Nathan Fawcett Says He Wants to Pursue Her
Anne Sutton looked at him. "What are you talking about? You’re Ethan Linden! The Head of the Linden Family. If you’re a nobody, then what does that make the rest of us?"
Nathan Fawcett glanced at Anne Sutton in her pajamas. "Are you staying up this late just to come laugh at me?" he asked. "Don’t you have to wait for Justin Shields to pick you up tomorrow morning?"
"I don’t think I ever agreed to that," Anne Sutton said.
She hadn’t even had a chance to reply before Justin Shields left.
Later, Anne Sutton sent him a message telling him not to come in the morning.
Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett asked, "So, you told him not to pick you up?"
"I have my own car, so I can just drive," Anne Sutton said. "Besides, I need to leave early tomorrow. Waiting for him might make me late."
Hearing this, the tension in Nathan Fawcett’s body finally eased.
He stood up and said to Anne Sutton, "Come on, let’s go to bed. I’m tired."
Anne Sutton looked at him and raised an eyebrow. "Not angry anymore?"
"When was I ever angry?" Nathan Fawcett said.
’He’s playing dumb!’
As Anne Sutton left the study with him, she still found it a little hard to believe.
Nathan Fawcett took a shower and then returned.
He sat on the edge of her bed, lifted the covers, and got right in.
Anne Sutton looked at him. "Not sleeping on the couch anymore?"
"Nope. Whoever wants the couch can have it!" Nathan Fawcett said, pulling Anne Sutton into his arms.
Seeing how he was getting more and more brazen, Anne Sutton said, "Have you completely forgotten what you said? Didn’t you promise you wouldn’t touch me unless I agreed? You also said you were going to sleep on the couch. What’s with the sudden change?"
’Does he have no shame?’
’He’s always been so obsessed with his pride!’
Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "When did I ever say those things?"
"Could you be any more shameless?"
’How could he deny it now?’
Anne Sutton stared at the man, utterly speechless.
Nathan Fawcett took her hand, brought it to his lips, and kissed the back of it. "If Justin Shields comes looking for you again," he said, "ignore him."
"Why?" Anne Sutton asked. "He said he wants to be with me, and he’s been pursuing me. I’m single, after all..."
"If you’re single, then what am I?" Nathan Fawcett demanded. "Do I mean nothing to you?"
"What are you?" Anne Sutton laughed at his question. "You’re Nathan Fawcett, you’re Ethan Linden, you’re the Head of the Linden Family, you’re Ian’s father, and you’re also my ex-husband... Besides all that, what else could you be?"
"..." The words "ex-husband" felt like a knife twisting in Nathan Fawcett’s heart.
Nathan Fawcett’s face darkened.
Anne Sutton teased, "Wasn’t there someone who wanted to see me happy with Charles Prescott? Someone who wanted me to be with him? Since you were willing to let me be with Charles, it should be fine if I choose Justin Shields instead, right? So why aren’t you happy about it?"
"That was because I thought you liked him," Nathan Fawcett said.
"So if I like someone, you’ll just step aside? Are you really that selfless?"
"I wasn’t thinking that far ahead back then," Nathan Fawcett said. "I thought all you wanted was everything the Fawcett Family had to offer, so I figured I would just give it all to you. I didn’t dare force you into anything because I was afraid you’d hate me. I’ve never been the popular one, not since I was a kid. Charles Prescott might be a bit of a scumbag, but he’s always been well-liked."
"Then maybe I should get together with him?" Anne Sutton suggested.
Hearing her words, Nathan Fawcett tightened his arm around Anne Sutton. He lowered his head until his face was almost touching hers. "That’s enough. You know I get jealous, yet you say these things on purpose! From now on, whether it’s Justin Shields or Charles Prescott, they can both get lost. You’re mine!"
"I’m not yours," Anne Sutton retorted. "I still have our divorce papers, you know."
"Then I’ll marry you again!" Nathan Fawcett declared. "Would that solve the problem?"
"Just because you want to marry me doesn’t mean I have to accept. It’s not like you’re the only man in the world."
Nathan Fawcett felt like Anne Sutton’s words were about to break his heart.
He looked at her. "You really think it’s fun to tease me like this, don’t you?"
Anne Sutton nodded. "It is!"
Hearing her answer, Nathan Fawcett was furious. He lowered his head, captured her lips with his, and bit down hard.
Anne Sutton cried out in pain. "What are you doing?"
"You made me do it!" Nathan Fawcett retorted.
"You’re going too far." Anne Sutton reached out and pushed at him.
He grabbed her wrist, pinning it by her side. Staring at her, he asked, "Anne, if I proposed to you, would you say yes?"
"..." Anne Sutton fell silent for a moment.
’A proposal?’
She’d never really thought about it.
When she was with Charles Prescott, they had gotten engaged early...
Back then, her parents had been eager for her and Charles Prescott to get married quickly.
Her father had brought it up many times, but the Prescott Family had reservations. They looked down on the Sutton Family and felt that Anne Sutton would only be a burden to Charles Prescott, that her family would drag him down. That’s why the wedding never happened.
Her relationship with Nathan Fawcett afterward was just to spite Charles Prescott. Even though they got legally married, it was only to give their child a legitimate name.
There were no feelings between them.
Even Stella Shields knew she was just a tool for Nathan Fawcett to carry on his family line.
But now...
Hearing him mention the word "proposal," Anne Sutton felt a little dazed.
After all, for her, the moment she married Nathan Fawcett, she had given up on all the beautiful fantasies a girl could ever dream of...
She thought all the wonderful things about marriage were no longer for her. And now, Nathan Fawcett was actually saying he wanted to propose?
"There’s no need for that, is there?" Anne Sutton said.
Seeing her reaction, Nathan Fawcett ruffled her hair. "I don’t care. If Justin Shields can pursue you, why can’t I? I’m going to pursue you from now on, too!"
’A guy like Justin Shields thinks he can steal Anne Sutton right out from under my nose? He’ll have to get through me first.’
Anne Sutton stared at the man before her. "Are you insane?"
"Then just assume I am," Nathan Fawcett said.
...
The next morning, Nathan Fawcett was already up before Anne Sutton had even gotten out of bed.
When Anne Sutton came downstairs, breakfast was already laid out on the table.
She had originally planned to come down early to make breakfast herself.
"Morning," Nathan Fawcett said when he saw her.
He was sitting to one side, watching her with a comfortable expression.
"You went to bed so late, but you’re up so early?" Anne Sutton asked.
"Didn’t you say you like Westhaven cuisine?" Nathan Fawcett said. "I hired a cook specifically to make it for you. She’s supposed to be an expert at Westhaven dishes. Do you like it?"
"..." Anne Sutton looked at the man before her, remembering what he had said last night about pursuing her...
’Is this what he meant by ’pursuing’ me?’
’Whatever Justin Shields gives me, he’s going to give me too?’
’Does he have to be so childish?’
Because Ian was a late riser, it was just Anne Sutton and Nathan Fawcett at the breakfast table.
Nathan Fawcett sat beside Anne Sutton and put some food on her plate. "Go on, eat. It’s your favorite."
’No matter how skilled Justin Shields is, he can’t be *that* good.’
Nathan Fawcett was confident that the cook’s food was much better than anything Justin could make.
