"For everything that you do, thank you." Someone had to say it to her, so he did.
"Uh... this is awkward..." Her voice became smaller, but Spiderwoman quickly regained her Vigor. "You are a real smooth talker, man. Bet you are popular with the ladies."
"A little." John simply smiled while shrugging.
"Not a humble bone in your body, huh? Anyway, until next time." A web shot from her wrist as she used it to swing away.
With a few swings, she was able to make sure that no one was left in the expo before she landed in the park nearby. The police had used this place as a temporary shelter for those harmed in the attack. A bit further from the blaring sirens and running paramedics trying to help the injured. Spiderwoman slipped through the thick foliage and landed behind a large tree.
Making sure that no one was around, the mask came off. While trying her best to control her breathing, she put on the clothes she had thrown on the ground in a hurry.
Her hoodie got stained with mud, but her jeans were relatively clean. After looking at her clothes and making sure nothing was out of place, she started for the gathering of civilians and blended in.
’John knows.’ That thought dominated her mind.
He had figured out that she was Spiderwoman today. Someone found out. Gwen had always dreaded this day, the day someone caught her playing the masked hero.
Sitting down on the ground near the fountain, hands covering her face. Her heart was beating so fast it might as well jump out of her mouth. Her hands trembled, but it wasn’t out of fear.
’For everything that you do, thank you.’
The words kept echoing in her ears. In this moment, she wasn’t scared that John found out. Instead, she felt at ease. The weight on her shoulder, that felt like a mountain, felt a bit lighter.
Her mind went to the nameless MC of Fight Club. The support groups, the pain, the tears, the release that came with vulnerability and confiding in someone even if it wasn’t done correctly.
Being the Spiderwoman, it hasn’t been easy. It wasn’t as fabulous or heroic as one would believe. She was just running away. Running from the worry that came with being changed so much over the course of a night. Running from a house where she couldn’t even speak with her father out of fear that he might identify her.
She may have saved many lives, and many had said thank you. But they were all to the amazing Spiderwoman that always swung in to save the day despite the malicious news and without regard to how hard her day had been.
But today, for the first time, someone had thanked Gwen for holding on. John had thanked her not for arriving as Spiderwoman, but for the resolve of trying to save someone even if it would’ve been detrimental to her.
’Ugh, I need to give him a piece of my mind when he comes back. Getting me all emotional like this.’ She looked up, trying to stop the tears from falling.
Just then, a giant burst of yellow overtook the night sky. Gwen looked at Stark Expo; her eyes widened.
A series of explosions echoed throughout the place, each bigger than the last. It was like dominoes.
’No, no, no.’ Gwen looked at the massive cloud of heat and fire rising over the Expo, rising to her feet in a state of shock.
John was still in there. Sure, he was strong, but an explosion of that scale would even give her problems.
’Please be safe, please!’ She wanted to run to the trees and get the clothes off, but her dash led her straight towards the Expo while others were stunned by the series of blasts.
And the moment she took the first step, her face collided with something rock solid. Rubbing her nose, she looked in front of her. It was a chest. For a moment, she had thought it was a wall.
However, what mattered more to her was who this chest belonged to. Just looking at his face, her eyes started to sting hard, and the tears welled up even if she had tried her hardest to stop them.
"Gwen, you crying?" Although he was being the very incarnation of annoyance at the moment, she dove into him and wrapped her hands around his back. Face buried in his chest as the tears showed no signs of stopping.
"Gwen?" Even John sounded surprised at this, not to mention Gwen herself, but she wasn’t in the correct headspace to worry about anything else.
"Shut up and pat my back." She snapped, grabbing onto his shirt.
"No need to be like this; I was only joking." His voice turned a tone softer as his hand landed on her back, slowly consoling her.
For some unknown reason, finally crying into his chest felt odd, but strangely and unfairly comforting.
After she had cried herself into the sea of embarrassment, John helped get her home. Holding her hand throughout the journey. But that only made her more conscious of their surroundings and whoever passed by them.
But even if she told him she was ok, he only said one thing in that annoyingly suave and convincing voice.
"If you don’t want me to hold your hand, you can say that directly."
Gwen didn’t breathe a word about it for the rest of the way. But her eyes always looked at the way his fingers wrapped around hers. The way he matched her much slower pace. Looking at her every few minutes just to make sure she hadn’t started crying again.
It was hard to let go of his hand when they reached her flat.
’Maybe I shouldn’t have...’ Gwen’s face turned red as she twisted and turned on her bed, thrashing like an emotional ragdoll.
But every once in a while, her eyes went to the handkerchief on the bedside table. A simple white cloth with a checkered pattern. It looked like something old people used, but John had forgotten to take it from her.
Gwen could feel his scent on it, even if it had been diluted by her tears, but it was a scent she remembered fully, even if it was faint.
"Thank you..." She whispered into the cloth, holding it close to her chest and closed her eyes.
A few moments ago, she was worrying how she would face him in university tomorrow, but after a moment of contemplation, she drifted into the best sleep of her life.

Not so far from her apartment building, John had just arrived at his home. Taking off his shoes by the door, he slumped into his chair.
With a heavy sigh, he looked at the ceiling. He was sweaty, a bit tired, and he had a lot to do, but for the moment all he could do was look at the system window that had popped up in his view when he was climbing the stairs.

"Ok system, you are doing too much now." He waved the panel away with a groan.
Nothing could’ve prepared him for the way Gwen cried. As strong as the Spiderwoman was, in that moment, she felt much smaller. He would’ve stayed a bit longer with her, but she needed some alone time to sort her thoughts. And he didn’t want to intrude more than he already had.
Sighing for the nth time, he knew Gwen would bounce back tomorrow like nothing ever happened. But how much of that energy would be real?
That remained to be seen.
After a quiet moment, John looked at his computer. Before leaving the house, he had scheduled Chapter 3 of Fight Club for release. And it seemed that Chapter had done quite well.
After looking through the reader’s reactions, he turned to four brown envelopes he had found in his room’s mailbox on his way up.
