Chapter 36: Stark Expo (IV)
"Ordering me the moment we met, huh. One of those alpha types, are you?" She chuckled, crouching low on the ground.
John smiled as two strings of webs grabbed onto the pole as she launched herself towards the flying drones.
The air force drones sent several missiles her way. But Spiderwoman’s web shot out and connected to the drones. She twisted her body to thread through the barrage of missiles and landed on the shoulder of a drone.
"Missed me, idiot." She smacked the metal head with a laugh. Then, her spider senses flared.
One of the drones had gotten behind her. But the feeling died down as a deafening crunch made her turn. She saw the tungsten stick lodged deep into the Drone’s chest. Because of its lighter armour, it went through and mangled the wiring inside.
The drone fell, and she jumped down, dodging the swing of the drone. While falling, she sent her web and pulled the tungsten stick. Then threw it back towards John.
"Nice work." He said, hurling it at another Drone that was targeting the mid-swing Spiderwoman.
She caught the stick with her web again, as it crunched through a head of the drone. But instead of simply sending it back. She swung it through one of the drones as she spun midair.
"This is fun!" She perked up.
It almost felt like a game of frisbee. Just that if one of them misjudged, they’d find a 20 kg piece of tungsten slamming against their body.
’Should I try a Haki slash? Can I even do that though?’ He wondered while catching the stick as it came swinging towards him.
But he shook his head soon after. Since Gwen’s arrival, dealing with the drones became much easier. His body was already starting to lose the heat that came with intense battle.
But it wasn’t a waste.
[Hanma Bloodline (Awakening—56%)]
The drones had been useful as test dummies and also showed him where his limits were. And this wasn’t the only loot from this fight.
[Natasha Romanoff finds you interesting. +10 EP]
He looked at the drones, focusing on them, letting out a small smile.
’Jackpot.’

Natasha had started her drive towards the Hammer Industries Labs in Queens after getting a report about Hammer’s forceful hijacking of the Stark Expo.
By the time she had reached the control room, leaving a trail of incapacitated guards, no one was there. Even the CCTV footage of the Lab was wiped clean, leaving her with no trails to follow.
Still, she worked towards deactivating the drones, but then she watched a curious sight. A young man was fighting against these drones, which were equipped with machine guns and grenade launchers, with nothing but a stick.
The shocking part? He was winning.
Her sharp eyes narrowed as she observed his movements getting refined with each takedown. His positioning kept improving as the drones were forced into one-on-ones. And he dominated them with precise attacks that aimed for weak spots while slipping through their field of view using obstacles and wrecked drones.
It was like watching a system to neutralize an enemy being built one step at a time. However, what really made her whistle was his face. Sure, he was good-looking, but that wasn’t the only reason.
This guy was in the file Fury had handed her for the next mission. He had a connection with the writer John Doe. Well, not so much as a connection, but a link. His IP address was shown in the list when SHIELD was tracking down the John Doe website.
But that wasn’t enough for Fury to send her after him.
The bank robbery was done by Ajax, a result of a project that copied the cancelled Wolf Spiders program of the Red Room.
These guys were trained by the Winter Soldier, the same way Wolf Spiders were; most of them were killed because of the brutality, and the ones who survived were used to carry out terror attacks around the world when the organization needed them.
And a seemingly normal university student had beaten one of the survivors into a coma. Now, he was basically fighting walking tanks like they were made of paper.
Then the supposed death of Kraven, where she found his traces as well.
Even without a clear link to the John Doe case, this guy had enough fun in his life.
A spunky guy for sure.
’He has insane adaptability. Footwork from boxing, the way he handles the stick is taking inspiration from Pencak Silat. There are key tells for Karate and Muay Thai in the way he moves. Most likely CQC system.’
The young man already seemed natural in his techniques, pretty much on par with Korean special forces she had seen in that regard. But on top of that, he had unnatural strength, an uncanny instinct, and the terrifying ability to learn things and then create his own systems.
’Now he’s using the stick as a ranged weapon.’ She had heard about how Captain America fought on the front lines with his shield.
And today she saw it with her own eyes. But this was a much more violent version of Captain America.
"I doubt Cap enjoyed running through a shower of bullets and missiles this much." Natasha paused on John’s delightful smirk before Spiderwoman joined and they covered for each other, zooming through the place.
’Fury would like to know more about this, but I haven’t gotten a lead this good in a while.’ While powering down the drones, she connected to the cameras in the area, dug into the storage devices, and swiped all the footage for herself.
Wiping all backups in the process.
Tony, who wasn’t as overwhelmed by the drones thanks to John and Spiderwoman, had just handled Vanko alone. With that, her task was finished here and at Stark Industries.
Now, on to the next one.
"It’s like he wants to get caught, or does he not care?" She noticed John looking at the camera and smirking.
Did he know she was on the other side?
That might be a stretch, but it was clear that he expected someone to be watching, and midway he had become certain of it. He was showing all his good sides for the cameras too.
’Someone like this doesn’t just drop from the sky one day.’ Still, there was no need to let Fury know just yet, not until she had checked a few things herself.
Natasha pulled out the flash drive and started walking towards the door, stepping on the unconscious guards by the door like they were doormats.
’This is what you get for messing with my vacation plans, boss.’ Natasha stretched her arms, a delicate smile playing at her lips.
She had barely touched the Biochemistry notes till now out of protest, but she couldn’t wait to get to her new position now.
There was an interesting guy to probe around after all.
And if she did it just right, he might give her what she was looking for. At least that’s what she felt.
Back at the Stark Expo, Spiderwoman and John finally find some rest as the drones stopped and crashed into the ground with heavy thuds.
"Done already? I was just warming up." She complained while landing next to John with her light feet. "We should really team up a few more times; the fight felt a lot easier today."
"I’ll have to check my schedule." He said.
"Playing hard to get, eh?" She poked at his sides. "Check your schedule and get back to me."
"Sure," John spoke normally.
But just when he had thought that Spiderwoman was about to leave, she looked at him again.
"You aren’t gonna ask anything else? ...No questions? No asking for an autograph? I’ll have you know the latter makes for a good momento." Although she sounded cheery, John could understand her current situation.
"Do you want me to ask questions?"
"Well..." Spiderwoman rubbed the back of her head, clearly in a conundrum.
However, John patted her shoulder to bring her out of her thoughts.
"If there is something I want to say, it is thank you." He said.
"For... what?" The gears in her brain halted.
"For everything that you do, thank you." Someone had to say it to her, so he did.
