Chapter 52: Sand Control? Just the Basics

"We’ll talk about that later. The tour group is going in. Let’s hurry and follow them."

Hank McCoy pointed at a group in the distance and spoke to everyone.

It was 1973, and simple black-and-white surveillance cameras already existed. In order to respond to Pietro, they also had to enter the building and deal with the surveillance problem.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this building was constructed in..."

The tour guide introduced the origin of the Pentagon while leading everyone through the visit.

At that moment, Hank took out a small signal transmitter, preparing to interfere with the surveillance.

Beep, beep.

After adjusting the antenna, Hank switched all the surveillance footage to television programs.

"Hey? The signal here has a problem. Come fix it when you have time."

The people in the monitoring room did not realize this was an intrusion. Instead, because the boring surveillance feeds had turned into television programs, they reported it and then happily started watching the show.

With the surveillance gone, Orion Cross and the others separated from the crowd and walked toward the service elevator.

"You said earlier that we would know your ability in a while. Does that mean the kid will be discovered?"

After pressing the elevator button, Wolverine turned to Orion Cross and asked.

"That’s what I meant."

Orion Cross did not deny it and admitted it directly.

In the original plot, Quicksilver needed to wear goggles even when running at full speed to keep his eyes from being damaged. If he ran too fast, he would even feel nauseous.

That made it even worse for Pietro, who had only recently gained his ability and had barely familiarized himself with it once or twice.

Nausea and vision problems were minor issues. If he failed to control himself properly, he might even crash and injure himself.

After all, Pietro’s speed was purely speed. It was not the Speed Force of the Flash from DC next door.

Speed was power.

Ding.

"Who are you—ah!"

Halfway down, the elevator doors opened. Before the people inside could even finish speaking, Wolverine knocked them unconscious with a few punches, closed the doors, and continued descending.

"Then it looks like we need to speed things up."

Wolverine wiped his fists and spoke.

"I don’t like this."

Seeing this scene, Charles pressed his lips together.

"If you had your ability, none of us would need to do anything."

Wolverine glanced at Charles and spoke.

Beep, beep.

The phone in Orion Cross’s pocket suddenly rang.

Wolverine and Professor X, who had been bickering, turned their eyes to him at the same time.

"Pietro ran into trouble."

"Hank, Logan, grab Charles."

"Wanda, grab me."

Orion Cross quickly reminded everyone. Then he raised his right hand, and the entire elevator, along with the walls around it, turned into yellow sand, carrying them downward at high speed.

This was the most basic ability of the Desert Emperor Ascended Form: turning matter into sand that could be controlled.

The difficulty of transformation, from easiest to hardest, was sand, soil and glass, stone and plastic, dead biological remains, and metal.

If he wanted to turn a one-kilogram block of iron into sand, the magic power required would be enough for Orion Cross to transform an entire mountain.

And by coincidence, the cage built to imprison Magneto contained not a single trace of metal. It was entirely made of cement and glass. For Orion Cross, controlling and transforming this material into sand was effortless.

"Stop! Don’t move!"

The prison guards raised transparent plastic handguns and aimed them at Pietro, who was leaning against the wall and vomiting. They took out plastic handcuffs and slowly closed in.

Whoosh.

"What did you do?"

Under the horrified gazes of several prison guards, the plastic guns in their hands, along with the plastic bullets inside, all turned into sand and slipped through their fingers.

"Sorry, Brother Orion Cross. I let you down."

When Pietro heard the prison guards’ terrified cries, he knew Orion Cross had arrived. He rubbed his eyes, which had been injured by moving too fast, and turned around.

"This is a warning. Next time, maybe I won’t be able to save you."

Orion Cross’s voice rang out above Pietro’s head. After a brief delay, a huge hole opened in the ceiling, and Orion Cross’s group stepped on flowing yellow sand as they landed on the ground.

"Hurry! Sound the alarm!"

The prison guards, who had lost their weapons, turned in terror and ran toward the side, preparing to press the alarm button.

"Emperor’s Divide!"

Orion Cross waved his hand, and the yellow sand scattered across the ground transformed into several shield-wielding sand soldiers, directly pinning the prison guards against the corner of the wall and leaving them unable to move.

"All right. Let’s keep moving."

Orion Cross clapped his hands and spoke to everyone.

"That ability of yours... makes me feel like I’m seeing another Erik."

Charles stared at Orion Cross with a sharp gaze and slowly spoke.

"Then you might be seeing wrong."

Orion Cross shrugged. His sand control was merely the foundation needed to perform his other abilities. It was fundamentally different from Magneto’s power.

Three minutes later, everyone reached the lowest level.

If you were a man, you descended one hundred floors. Challenge complete.

"We’re here. He’s sleeping pretty peacefully."

Looking through the glass at Magneto lying on the blanket below, Charles spoke in a tone full of mockery.
