Chapter 6: Technology Defeats Magic?
"She is Hela, the Goddess of Death from Norse mythology."
Orion Cross casually pointed at Hela and spoke.
"And you? Which figure from mythology are you?"
Carol glanced at Hela in surprise before her gaze returned to Orion Cross.
Compared to a character from myth appearing in reality, she was more concerned about Orion Cross’s identity right now.
"There’s no such person as me in mythology. I already told you, I’m just an ordinary mortal."
Orion Cross shook his head and answered.
"Yes, an ordinary mortal."
Hela let out a mocking laugh and said, "Odin sealed an ordinary mortal together with his daughter. What a very ordinary mortal indeed."
That tone, that inflection. One listen was enough to tell she was a master of sarcasm.
Carol immediately turned her head to look at Orion Cross, a smile still hanging at the corners of her mouth.
It was as if she were saying, "See? Even your teammate sold you out, and you’re still pretending?"
"If you can take me out, I’ll tell you."
Orion Cross pointed at the layer of sealed barrier in the distance and spoke to Carol.
"Come here. I’ll try."
Carol frowned slightly, stood up, and walked to the edge of the seal.
"You agreed just like that? What if he’s some world-ending demon? Once you let him out, your Midgard will be finished."
Hela looked at the two of them with some surprise from the side.
"Maybe she’s very confident in her own strength."
Orion Cross shrugged and followed Carol over.
Carol fired energy at the seal with one hand while grabbing Orion Cross with the other, trying to use the method from before to bring him through the barrier.
Thud!
Orion Cross slammed headfirst into the seal.
"As expected, it doesn’t work..."
Thud! Thud! Thud!
Carol, who was outside the seal, seemed unwilling to believe it and pulled hard several more times.
"Hey, hey, stop! Are you playing drums or what?!"
After being slammed into the barrier a few more times, Orion Cross directly grabbed Carol in return and pulled her back into the seal.
"Looks like it failed."
Carol frowned slightly as she looked at the layer of seal she could not understand. The good mood she had from resolving the Kree fleet incident earlier gradually disappeared.
"You just thought you were invincible, only to immediately hit a wall. Feels pretty awful, doesn’t it?"
The two returned to the grass and sat down again. Orion Cross looked at Carol, who had lowered her head in silence, and smiled faintly as he spoke.
"It does."
Carol nodded without avoiding the question.
She had actually been preparing to leave Earth.
In order to end the war, she had to help the Skrulls find a new home, expose the Kree’s conspiracy, and stop the Supreme Intelligence’s methods of war.
Originally, Carol had thought Earth was very safe now. But after coming into contact with Orion Cross and Hela today, she realized that what she had seen before was only the tip of the iceberg.
"You don’t need to worry about Earth. There are others guarding it."
"Others?"
Carol was slightly stunned, then came to a realization.
Since two extraordinary beings like Orion Cross and Hela were already right in front of her, it would not be strange if there were more.
However...
Carol increasingly felt that her own knowledge seemed far too lacking.
If she did not even understand the Earth where she had been born, then how many secrets were hidden in the deep, vast universe?
"Do you have any other requests? I can try to help you, as long as you tell me more about things I don’t know."
Carol looked at Orion Cross sincerely and made her request.
"Then help me run an internet cable in here. This place is too boring, which causes this woman to come looking for a fight with me whenever she feels like it. In every sense of the word."
Orion Cross thought for a moment and said.
Hela: "..."
"Internet? You mean the internet? It can transmit inside this seal?"
Carol looked utterly incredulous.
"Why not? Even air can flow through here."
Orion Cross shrugged and spoke.
"But..."
Carol looked conflicted, still feeling that something was off.
Wasn’t this seal arranged by Odin, the legendary God-King?
Even she had to use quite a bit of energy to break through it, and she still could not bring Orion Cross out.
Yet now, one tiny internet connection could connect the two sides?
"Just go call someone over and try it. Then we’ll know whether it works or not."
Orion Cross patted Carol on the shoulder and said.
Asgard seemed to possess technology for interstellar travel, but in reality, it had more magic than technology.
Because of their own limitations, humans on Earth had to climb the technology tree one step at a time.
As for Asgardians, they had magic as their foundation, so they could jump around the technology tree however they liked.
This also led to Asgard having no internet, no computers, and not even telephones or cell phones.
This could be seen from the conversation when Thor went to find Doctor Strange in Thor: Ragnarok.
Since Asgard had no internet, even if Odin knew about it, he definitely would not have gone out of his way to guard against that point.
In that case, the data transmission of the internet should be just like air, able to enter and leave the seal freely.
"If the seal really can’t be broken, I’ll just be a shut-in here and wait until Odin dies."
Orion Cross watched Carol leave, stretched lazily toward the sun, and lay down on the ground.
Carol said she was going to call her friend over to help. If Orion Cross had not guessed wrong, a bald bastard would definitely appear soon!
