Master Of None

Chapter 2978. Floating a Bit High

Returning to the bridge to the world was easier with the teleportation skills Walker used. He didn’t have many issues at all when moving because of the added manas he had absorbed.

While he had managed to use much more mana when within the elemental planes and the outer edges of them, that didn’t seem to matter with how quickly they replenished. Being able to use the ambient manas around him proved time and time again to be a massive benefit. All he had to do was focus on making those manas his own and bringing them together within himself.

What they did not expect to see when they arrived though, was something else entirely.

"That is a flying ship?" Midnight tried to get a closer look at the small thing in the air. It was very high and just before she took a leap off the ground and flew to examine it, Gil spoke up.

"No, that is a floating house. It looks like someone is going to be in a lot of trouble." It wasn’t even a few moments before he started to laugh and everyone saw the harpies and a couple of dragons approaching. They clearly had been called to handle this unusual situation.

Looking well ahead, Walker spotted one of the newly built houses ahead and where there should be a second built nearby it.

This land near the bridge to the elemental planes was going to be built to ensure there were temporary homes for those who visited. While that would be the case, it was only natural that some would be purchased by residents of the world.

It appeared that someone with some ideas of rune carving and the floating island projects had decided to take their work home.

Literally.

"Seems like a Walker project to handle." Remey was off with a few leaps dodging the responsibility while Su silently walked away looking at a group of nearby guards assisting in the movement of larger materials. An important duty when transporting the larger built frame for homes like the one currently above their heads.

"I would have to agree that we have pressing matters." Gil stepped through the air and decided rooftops were the best path to take toward his and Alma’s office space. Clearly, he had decided that seeing her would be the priority over whatever foolish acts caused this house to float.

Then again, Walker knew that Alma would have given Gil an earful if he had not made a move to meet her first. That was just how it had to be with the high amount of responsibilities they possessed.

Looking at Midnight who appeared even more amused by the second with the situation, Walker smiled softly and jumped in to the air himself.

"It appears we have an unregistered test of the floating island runes? Care to give me a bit of information about this?"

His question was answered by an elder wind dragon, one of two called here and clearly in charge of the harpy group also flying about. "This is a new home recently completed and lived in by a child of a rune carver working on the project to repair and redevelop the floating cities. We are unsure of details related to what they may have-"

"Heyyyyyyyy! Out there!!! Can we have help!!"

A child’s voice, maybe just reaching preteen called out clearly from the second floor window of the home. The first and grime on their face was just enough to hide the few scales that were perfect for letting everyone know they were of the Demi-human race.

Other than that, Walker could only guess the dirt might have come from carving or playing in the basement or what was since the basement of this house.

"I will make a house call. Midnight will help prepare a stopping point on the ground where we will bring the house back down to." Like being given the world’s most important mission, Midnight darted toward the ground and pushed back some of the onlookers who quickly became happier to meet her than see the oddities above them.

Walker stepped through the air landing right at the doorway and knocked calmly. The noise inside the house of arguing between what he could only guess were siblings quieted before the door opened slowly.

The worried face he’d just seen and the two smaller worried faces of twin little girls made it all too clear that there was not a single adult home.

"Let me take a guess, mom and Dad are at work or shopping and you were left in charge?" A slight nod, worried but truthful. "One of your parents works on the floating island projects and you wanted to try too?" Another slow but clear nod.

"Then let me help you get back down on the ground. And from there, we will talk about the new class you just got, sounds good?" The boy nodded a bit more vigorously.

With this, Walker entered the home and was impressed with the new furniture and well made everything. It looked stable despite the fact that it was much further in the air than it ever should be. It even appeared that there was absolutely no damage to the home whatsoever.

The craftsmanship was many times better than what homes had been when he first began his adventuring journey. It was a wonder how craftsmen had adapted so quickly.

The passion that craftsmen possessed was second to none in Walker’s mind after having this in depth look at new homes just being built.

Upon entering the basement and feeling the slight fear that it would fall, Walker saw the rune formation.

Gravity runes, protective runes, elemental runes, they were all there. All working together to feed mana to activate the entire formation well. It didn’t even seem rough but instead it seemed that the somewhat disorganized formation worked in balance.

He’d expected something rough and barely working, but instead found that the way the formation was built was actually ignoring the normal round form they took.

The formation was oval with overlapping sections that jutted out making rounded points like rounded triangles. It was different but balanced. An interesting idea for the formation and potentially a better way that the turn carvers could experiment with placing them on equipment.

All of this aside, Walker began to stop the mana in the formation without destroying it. He understood this could be the beginning of a new talent’s future. He also wanted there to be evidence for those who studied it further pushing them to better develop the rune formations overall in the future.

The house slowly began to lower and Walker started to hear Midnight shouting where to move. Walker easily added wind mana manipulation to push side to side and perfectly place the home back where it had come.

The shake scared the three children but the two twin little girls appeared to be instantly excited to rush out and touch the ground again. The boy though, he was looking at Walker with a stunned face. Clearly, he was amazed by what had happened and how the rune formation had been stopped here today.

"What happened! I came home and the house was gone and all of the guards- where is your brother!"

"I believe you have to go explain to your mother, good luck." Walker chuckled a bit as the terror on the boys’ face matched that of any child who had just caused their parents a fright.

As Walker left the home he spotted a disheveled rune carver he’d met before. A younger man who had advanced quickly with his ability to repair rune formations and copy them better.

"Before you go yelling and worrying, your son has some talent for you to study. But he’ll need to learn where and when is appropriate. And your two daughters are very adorable and didn’t cry a single tear, they are very brave. So I wish you luck too." The rune carver paused trying to understand the situation but Walker had already walked away with Midnight as he tried to respond.

"So that was neat hmm?" Midnight bounced with each step and smiled at Walker in agreement. She was happy to help as soon as they returned and also to see something unique.

"I am pretty sure they will have a whole floating village sooner than later. Might even have an island or city in a couple of years now. That boy might change all the ideas of how rune formations should look going forward. It just depends on him." Now Midnight was paying closer attention.

Knowing who would be making big differences was very valuable for the future. Especially since Walker thought so. But she also had spotted someone on the street shouting about a new soup to try while on the go. The perfect chance to have a new treat before they got home.
