Chapter 447 - 444: Don’t Come Back Until She Forgives You
Mrs. Grant clearly didn’t believe her. "Stop spouting nonsense. At my age, I don’t need you to teach me how to tell right from wrong. Catherine and her mother did a DNA test. The proof is in the results."
Chloe Marshall laughed drily. "The proof did make you believe, didn’t it? They are indeed mother and daughter, but that’s because they’re both impostors. Do you get it now? Both of them are fakes! We still don’t even know if Nora’s real mom is dead or alive! At your age, you should be in a nursing home. Your mind isn’t clear, and your eyes don’t work either."
Mrs. Grant couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing. She looked at Quentin Grant. "Quentin, is this true?"
Quentin Grant didn’t want to say another word to her. He turned and walked upstairs.
Mrs. Grant looked at the others. "Is it true or not!"
Herman Hawthorne nodded. "It’s true, Mrs. Grant."
A chill ran through Mrs. Grant. She hurried out of the living room, muttering as she went, "I don’t believe it. I don’t believe it!"
After leaving Quentin Grant’s villa, Mrs. Grant stood at the main gate, feeling as if all her strength had been drained away.
Then she got into her car and told the driver, "Home!"
The car started, and Mrs. Grant sat there, looking soulless.
When they arrived at the Grant Residence, she stumbled out of the car. Just as she reached the entrance to the living room, Mr. Grant slapped her, catching her completely off guard.
She fell hard to the ground, her palms stinging.
She slowly got to her feet, but for once, she didn’t lash out at Mr. Grant.
"Those two girls... just gone like that..." Mr. Grant said, then began to cry. "If it weren’t for you, how could that fake mother-daughter pair have gone undetected for so long!"
Mrs. Grant swayed. "How... how do you know..."
Mr. Grant replied, "Luna Ainsworth called and told me, of course! Nora is in a coma right now. As soon as she wakes up, he’s going to hold a press conference and announce this whole affair to the world!"
"What else did he tell you?" Mrs. Grant sank onto the sofa, her body limp and weak, as if she were on the verge of death.
Mr. Grant snorted. "What else? Nora’s mother is still missing. We don’t know if she’s dead or alive, and Luna is conducting a global search for her. The imposter mother is Faye Sinclair’s twin sister. Catherine is that sister’s daughter from a previous marriage. Luna is in agony... he can’t believe he didn’t realize it for so long. Now, he’s all alone in that house."
"Then what about Catherine and her mom?" Mrs. Grant pressed.
Mr. Grant clearly didn’t want to talk to her. "Why are you asking about them? They’re imprisoned, obviously. Since we still haven’t found Nora’s mom, their fate certainly won’t be a pleasant one once we do."
Mrs. Grant’s head was splitting. For a long while, she said nothing.
"I think... I’ve done the most unbelievably... stupid thing in the world."
’She never could have imagined that this whole thing, for so long, had been a scam. A complete and utter scam.’
’The woman she had despised with all her heart... now, all she felt was overwhelming guilt.’
Mr. Grant stood up. "Nora is in a coma. The doctors say she suffered a massive shock and has no will to wake up. Go apologize to your son. And take good care of her. If she doesn’t wake up, and if she doesn’t forgive you, then don’t come back."
As his footsteps faded into the distance, Mrs. Grant broke down, sobbing wretchedly.
A moment later, she stood up, wiped her tears, and walked out of the living room.
She returned to the luxury residential complex.
No one had left. Seeing her return, everyone was a little surprised.
Mrs. Grant knew Quentin was upstairs.
She hurried toward the stairs.
She stood at the door to the partially open bedroom. The sounds of suppressed, mournful cries coming from inside made her heart ache.
She pushed the door open.
Quentin Grant turned and saw her come in.
"Why are you back?"
Mrs. Grant’s voice was low. "Quentin, Mom went home, but I came back."
"What do you want?"
Mrs. Grant stepped forward and looked at him. "Quentin, Mom is so sorry. I was wrong. Your father said that if Nora doesn’t wake up and forgive me, I can’t go home. Please, let me make up for my mistake, okay?"
"If everyone could just make up for their mistakes, what would be the point of laws?" Quentin Grant was clearly unmoved. "Go home. She probably doesn’t want to see you either."
"Can’t you at least let me do something to ease my own conscience?"
"We have plenty of people here. We don’t need your help. Go home for now. You can come back when she wakes up."
"But your father..."
"I’ll call him."
Mrs. Grant had no choice but to leave once again.
Coming back downstairs, she made a point to stand before the group of people and said, "Chloe, I just found out the truth. My eyes are failing me, and my mind isn’t what it used to be. I know it’s too late to say anything now, but I really want to make it up to Nora."
"Let’s wait until Nora wakes up, then. It’s useless to talk about this now."
"Then I’ll be going." Her face was ashen, making her almost unnoticeable in the dim light of the evening.
The impact of this revelation on Mrs. Grant was no less than it was on anyone else.
Every time she remembered how every single word Catherine Callahan had said, from beginning to end, was a lie to deceive her, she wanted to kill the woman with her own two hands.
The feeling was maddening beyond description.
Lying there, Mrs. Grant tossed and turned, unable to sleep. She took two sleeping pills, but still couldn’t find rest.
Before dawn broke, Mrs. Grant changed her clothes, put on a pair of sunglasses, and boarded a direct flight to Draconia, the capital of Valeria.
She arrived at Luna Ainsworth’s mansion.
They hadn’t seen each other in many years, but upon meeting again, they still recognized one another instantly.
"You’re here..."
"I came because I need to see that fake mother-daughter pair, especially Catherine Callahan. That fraud who deceived me through and through. If I don’t see her with my own eyes, I just can’t let this go!"
Luna Ainsworth stood up. "Follow me."
Mrs. Grant followed close behind him down to the basement.
Upon seeing Mrs. Grant, Catherine Callahan’s eyes lit up.
But when she saw the look on her face, the flicker of hope that had just ignited within her was instantly extinguished.
"Godmother... save me..."
Mrs. Grant strode forward and snapped, "Don’t you dare call me Godmother. I am not your godmother, you little bitch. You’re pretty good at spinning lies, aren’t you? How come you’ve stopped now? You’re a real pro. You fooled me for a long, long time. I must have been blind not to see what kind of person you really are. At this point, it wouldn’t matter if you called me Godmother or the Queen Mother of Heaven herself. Besides, isn’t your real mother right here with you? Tell me, after you deceived me for so long, how should I ’repay’ you?"
Catherine Callahan looked at her. "I’m not getting out of this alive anyway, and my end won’t be pretty. So do whatever you want. I don’t care anymore. My life is worthless. I have an eye condition, a heart problem, my health is poor, and I can’t even have children. Any child I had would just inherit my diseases. Now that it’s come to this, all I can say is that I was too naive back then. I let go of Quentin, and that’s what gave Nora Ainsworth her chance. Heh."
