Chapter 446 - 443: Devastated by Grief
This was better than nothing. At least they were still alive and wouldn’t die so quickly.
Hearing a loud noise, the two boys quickly ran back to the cave. Although they didn’t know what had happened, their instincts told them someone had come to the island.
So, the two of them hid in a corner deep inside the cave, not daring to make a sound or even speak. Monty stood guard at the entrance.
When the search party reached the spot, they were about to go in for a look. But the moment they saw the python, they were all scared out of their wits and scrambled away, each one running faster than the last.
Scared half to death, none of them dared to investigate the cave.
Seeing the people run far off, Monty crawled back inside as if looking for praise, flicked out its tongue, and licked Dylan Grant.
Elmer Grant breathed a sigh of relief. "They must have been the people sent to catch us. Good, we’re safe again."
Dylan Grant nodded. "They must have realized we’re missing. We shouldn’t go outside for a while. If we get caught and taken back, I’m afraid we’ll really die."
And just like that, the two boys missed their parents.
Elmer Grant tightly gripped his older brother’s hand. "I miss Mommy so much. She must be heartbroken."
Dylan Grant said nothing.
The two of them fell into silence.
Seeing the two were unhappy, Monty tugged at Dylan Grant’s pant leg, pulling him toward the outside.
He stood up and pulled Elmer Grant out of the cave. Outside, the sky was a brilliant blue, and the air was crisp and fresh.
The two boys sat there.
Monty swayed back and forth in front of them, dancing happily, as if trying its best to cheer them up.
Dylan Grant stroked its head. "Monty, we miss our Daddy and Mommy a lot. How do you think we can get off this island?"
It stopped moving, its head drooping low.
It seemed to be troubled by something, as if it were crestfallen.
Dylan Grant added, "If we manage to get out, we’ll definitely take you with us. You’re our friend now. We won’t leave you here all by yourself."
It suddenly raised its head, seeming incredibly excited.
It tugged on Dylan Grant’s pant leg again and started heading down the slope.
Dylan Grant called for Elmer Grant to follow, and they slowly made their way after Monty.
They walked for a long time, until the two children were so tired they could barely move.
The sight that met Dylan Grant’s eyes made him both surprised and overjoyed.
He excitedly hugged Monty and kissed its scaly body. "Monty, you’re the best!"
Before them was none other than a grove of bamboo.
It was a small grove, but it was enough to make a raft.
They didn’t know how to build one, but now that they had the materials, how could they not figure it out?
The problem was how to cut down the bamboo.
They had no tools to cut it with.
In the end, they could only resort to the most primitive method, with no idea if it would even work.
They would take long, thin stones and grind them forcefully against a large boulder.
But the process was as slow and arduous as water dripping through stone—incredibly difficult.
And so.
The two boys returned to their cave and began the long process of grinding stones.
When Ethan Ellsworth and Chloe Marshall learned what had happened, they immediately rushed back to Fravia.
But by then, more than ten days had passed since the incident.
They contacted Quentin Grant, only to learn that the two boys were gone and Nora Ainsworth was in a coma.
Chloe Marshall couldn’t believe it. In such a short amount of time, something so terrible had happened.
They had originally planned to go to Valeria.
But Quentin Grant had decided to return. Every day he spent there, he felt wounded from the inside out, an agony that wouldn’t heal. And for every day they remained, he felt his Nora would not wake up.
Luna Ainsworth initially didn’t want Quentin Grant to take Nora back. But considering the situation, she relented, saying she would do everything in her power to find Faye Sinclair in Valeria—dead or alive. Sierra, not wanting to leave Nora Ainsworth’s side, said she would take care of her and came back with them.
A contingent of the Men in Black was left behind in Valeria.
The rest all returned to Fravia with Quentin Grant.
Back in their upscale apartment complex, Quentin Grant would inevitably find himself alone, covering his face and weeping bitterly.
His two sons... gone, just like that, from right under his nose.
’I should have hired a tutor to teach them at home.’
’I shouldn’t have let my guard down for a second.’
After returning, Quentin Grant saw on the news that the six teachers who died at the kindergarten had all received high compensation from the Valerian government, which also announced that the criminals had been brought to justice.
However, the identities of the criminals were not made public.
As a result, Mrs. Grant still had no idea about the earth-shattering events that had transpired in Valeria.
She didn’t know that Nora Ainsworth was Mr. Ainsworth’s biological daughter, nor that Claire Sinclair and Catherine Callahan were impostors.
Although she was sad that her two grandsons were gone, upon learning that Nora Ainsworth was in a coma, she felt a profound sense of relief and satisfaction.
She personally brewed some chicken soup and brought it over to Quentin Grant’s home.
The moment she entered the living room, she saw everyone sitting on the sofa in silence.
She walked in carrying the insulated container and called out, "Quentin, Mom made you some chicken soup. Look at you, you’ve lost so much weight."
Quentin Grant didn’t bother to respond. Mrs. Grant opened the container on her own, and the rich aroma of chicken soup filled the air.
"You have to eat to keep your strength up. No matter what’s happened, you can’t neglect your health." She poured a bowl and held it out to Quentin Grant. "Mom made this herself. It’s still hot. Drink up."
Quentin Grant slapped the bowl out of her hand. The porcelain shattered on the floor, splashing chicken soup everywhere.
"What are you doing?! I cooked for you, I brought it all the way here, and this is how you repay me?"
Quentin Grant stood up. "You think I’m in the mood for your chicken soup right now? Do you even realize you’re the one who did this?"
Mrs. Grant looked at his icy gaze, and a chill went through her. She quickly said, "I know you’re upset. I’m upset too. My two grandsons are gone. But the living have to go on."
"Upset? How could you be upset?" Quentin sneered. "The woman you always protected, the woman you treated better than a daughter, is the one who got your two grandsons killed. So tell me, how could you possibly be upset?"
Mrs. Grant was stunned, utterly baffled. "What are you talking about? You’re saying Catherine did this? How is that possible? I don’t believe it."
Chloe Marshall couldn’t stand it any longer. "Mrs. Grant, does something not happen just because you think it’s impossible? Does it stop being a fact just because you refuse to believe it? You just assume that everything you see and feel is the truth. It’s precisely that kind of thinking—your foolishness—that got those two boys killed!"
Mrs. Grant scoffed. "The Ellsworth family’s daughter-in-law... Since when is it your place to lecture me? What business is it of yours what happens in our family? You’re really overstepping your bounds."
Chloe Marshall laughed coldly. "Today, I’m not just going to lecture you as a junior, I’m going to chew you out! You protected Catherine Callahan all this time, and why? Because you thought she was Quentin’s godfather’s daughter, right? But did you know she’s an impostor? The real one is our Nora! Our Nora is the real daughter of Quentin’s godfather!"
