Chapter 1465 - 1459: How Is Your Mom?
When Evander Lancaster and his eldest brother Robert Lancaster rushed over, Aunt Xu had already crept up and down the stairs who knows how many times.
Every time she saw the exact same scene: the Lancaster Family’s Second Master lying motionless on the sofa, and Madam holding a wet towel, helping him "moisten his lips."
"What’s wrong with Second Uncle?" Robert Lancaster’s brows and eyes were dark with gloom as he looked at Second Uncle’s ruddy complexion, which didn’t look like a drunk reaction at all.
Father and son had worked together for many years and attended plenty of social functions together. Every time Joseph Lancaster drank, his face would turn pale—deathly white, drained of all color—but he had never been in a condition like this.
Violet Zimmerman didn’t answer her son’s question. She glanced at the two nannies waiting by the side.
"It’s getting late. You two should go rest as well."
Aunt Zhang had just opened her mouth to say "yes" when Aunt Xu spoke up first.
"Madam, I’m not sleepy. Let Sister Zhang go rest; I’ll stay here and keep you company. I can also run errands and help out."
"Aunt Xu, with me, a doctor, here, what help can you possibly offer?" Evander Lancaster said with a half-smile that wasn’t really a smile. On the way over, Aunt Zhang had already told him all about Joseph’s condition.
Having been snapped at by Second Young Master, Aunt Xu gave an awkward smile, lowered her head and said, "Yes, sir," then walked out of the bedroom together with Aunt Zhang.
Out in the hallway, Aunt Zhang reminded Aunt Xu, clearly disapproving.
"Little sis, we take money to do our job, so it’s best to stay within bounds. You need to know where the line is between what you should and shouldn’t do."
Aunt Xu was busy thinking things over and barely registered what Aunt Zhang said. She just smiled at her and replied, "I know. Thank you for the reminder, Sister Zhang."
They knew Gabriel Lancaster had been drugged, but the household only stocked common medicines for emergencies and solutions for treating wounds.
Sending him to the hospital would make too big a fuss. In the end, Evander decided, together with his eldest brother, to take him back to his place and use a folk remedy—a cold shower.
Only when the two brothers lifted the blanket covering Joseph Lancaster did they see that Violet had used a silk scarf to tie up his hands and feet.
It was at Joseph’s own instruction—he was afraid he might lose control and do something in front of the nannies that would give people grounds to criticize him, so he’d resorted to this last-ditch plan.
The brothers took Joseph back to his place and told their mother, Violet Zimmerman, not to worry, to act as usual and not let anyone with an agenda seize on anything.
The Lancaster Family’s Second Master’s self-control was not something an ordinary person could match; after running in cold water for barely ten minutes, he was already somewhat clear-headed.
Clenching his teeth, he closed his phoenix eyes and asked, "How’s your mom?"
"Mom’s fine, she wasn’t drugged."
Joseph could tell it was Evander’s voice. With his eyes shut, he ordered, "Go back. Your brother can stay with me."
"All right, I’ll head back first then. I’ll come by again tomorrow morning to check on you."
Evander didn’t insist on staying. If he did, he’d only be standing in the bathroom watching—having his older brother there was enough.
Early the next morning, Aunt Xu used throwing out the trash as an excuse and ran to Daemon Lancaster’s place to report in.
Failing to get the "evidence" as planned left Daemon Lancaster very disappointed.
Leaning back on the sofa, he furrowed his thick brows and thought for a long time before finally looking up.
"You’re sure there was no problem with the drug?"
"Master, I crushed the entire pill and put it in his teacup. I can absolutely guarantee it!" Aunt Xu said anxiously, raising her hand.
"Mm. Then did he have the reaction we expected?"
Daemon Lancaster asked, feeling there was something wrong somewhere, but unable to pinpoint exactly what for the moment.
Aunt Xu went into detail about everything she’d seen the previous night.
"When he got up to leave, his body swayed a bit, his face flushed and his hands were burning hot. Madam and I helped him up the stairs..."
Aunt Xu had just gotten to this part when Daemon Lancaster cut her off. "Was it Violet Zimmerman who told you to help him up?"
"No, Second Master wanted to go back. It was my suggestion," Aunt Xu hurriedly explained, sounding very much like she was trying to claim credit.
