Chapter 929: Ambiguity

"So your dad doesn’t mind?"

Finn Chandler listened, curious, feeling that the relationship between The Eldest Master Ford and Mrs. Ford was a bit too calm.

"No idea!"

Julian Ford answered simply.

Whether The Eldest Master Ford held any resentment or dissatisfaction toward Mrs. Ford was something Julian had never bothered to care about.

He was just like Mrs. Ford, not very interested in other people’s business, even when it came to his own parents.

"Okay then!"

Finn stopped asking. She burrowed into Julian’s arms; other people’s affairs really had nothing to do with her anyway!

That was how she and Julian saw it, but other people didn’t.

That night, Julian went into the bathroom to take a shower. The phone he’d left on the nightstand started ringing. Normally Finn wouldn’t touch Julian’s phone.

Everyone calling him was from The Ford Corporation, asking about work. She really didn’t want to hear any confidential stuff she shouldn’t.

But the phone rang several times in a row, so Finn leaned over and took a look. Seeing "Fiona Ford" on the screen, she didn’t think too much and picked up.

Fiona Ford hated her that much. Faced with someone who disliked her, Finn also had to make sure Fiona felt uncomfortable.

"Miss Ford, sorry, Julian’s in the shower right now."

Finn deliberately softened her voice, making her tone sound vaguely intimate.

Just that one line was enough to make Fiona on the other end swallow back everything she’d been about to say.

"Oh, it’s you."

Fiona replied coldly.

"Don’t get cocky. The Eldest Master Ford and Mrs. Ford agreed to let you marry in because of the baby in your belly."

"Mm."

Finn agreed with that.

The Eldest Master Ford had changed his mind only because she was pregnant.

Who knew—if one day she lost the baby, maybe The Eldest Master Ford would refuse to let her be with Julian anymore.

"And then what?"

Finn asked, not following.

Fiona hadn’t expected Finn to play so off-script. Even over the phone she could clearly feel her breathing grow heavier.

"Then just wait. Wait to see how The Ford Family kicks you out on the street."

"Sure, I’ll wait."

Finn answered readily. "Miss Ford, why do you hate me so much?"

Finn found this really strange. As an older sister, shouldn’t she want her younger brother to live well?

Fiona Ford was all smiles on the surface and a whole different story behind everyone’s back.

The more Finn thought about it, the weirder it seemed.

"No reason."

Fiona’s voice went hard and cold as she slowed her words, as if there were a lot of pent-up grievance hidden in her tone.

The bathroom door opened just then and Julian Ford came out.

Finn handed him the phone. "Miss Ford’s looking for you."

Julian glanced at the visibly displeased Finn, then, right in front of her, pressed the speakerphone button.

"What’s up?"

The moment Fiona heard Julian’s voice, her own changed instantly.

Completely different from how she’d sounded with Finn.

Much softer.

"Nothing much, just wanted to remind you you’re flying to the Imperial Capital the day after tomorrow for a business trip. Have you packed your luggage?"

"Do you need me to bring anything over for you from The Ford Family?"

"No need."

Julian rejected her outright.

"What’s wrong, Julian?"

Fiona’s tone softened even more. "Is Miss Flinch going to pack for you?"

"Before, whenever you went away, I was the one who helped you get everything together. I’m worried Miss Flinch won’t do it properly."

"I’m not going to the Imperial Capital."

Julian added. His answer was something Fiona had never seen coming.

"I’ll arrange for someone else to go with you. If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up."

Julian very decisively ended the call.

Finn watched him toss the phone onto the bed and towel off his wet hair, then asked, puzzled, "Are you going to the Imperial Capital?"
