Chapter 443: Cursed for Eight Generations
Just as Cecilia was about to change the subject, the cruise ship’s horn suddenly sounded!
Cecilia’s eyes lit up, and she nodded hastily to Sean.
"The wedding is probably about to start. I need to find my husband and board the ship with him."
"Your husband?"
Sean frowned faintly, his gaze concealing depths that Cecilia couldn’t begin to decipher.
The sunset at Isle of Whispers was breathtaking; golden rays streaked across the sharp lines of his high nose and deep-set eyes, outlining features that were almost unnaturally perfect, stunning to behold.
...
To love beauty is human nature. If Cecilia hadn’t spent years staring at Adrian Law, her own devastatingly handsome husband, she might’ve found herself a little dazed by Sean Grant’s almost excessive good looks.
Cecilia quickly averted her eyes and took a very polite step back from him.
"Grant, your Mandarin is so fluent that I keep forgetting you’re an exchange student from Vessaria. In Chinese, ’husband’ is what ’Mr.’ means in this context. My husband is Adrian Law—he’s also the groom’s elder brother today."
After such a thorough explanation, Cecilia thought Sean should grasp it now. Yet Sean merely frowned, stared at her in silence for quite a while, and finally nodded.
"So that’s how it is."
Seeing that he understood, Cecilia immediately gave him a bright wave goodbye.
"Time’s running short! I’ll go find my husband now. See you, Grant! If there’s a chance, I’ll introduce you two!"
Of course, that was purely being polite. Adrian Law was so jealous that, apart from envying Tyson, his only other target was Sean Grant.
Cecilia really was just saying it in passing. She glanced at her watch, then quickly picked up her skirt and rushed off toward the cruise liner.
...
She’d forgotten her phone when she arrived and now had no idea how to contact Adrian Law.
All she could do was wait in the rendezvous area by the cruise ship.
It was now 6:30 in the evening. The official wedding ceremony wouldn’t start until eight, though there was always the possibility they’d move it up.
Gathering early was meant for the celebratory tour of The Northern Vesperian Ocean. The ship was massive—large enough to accommodate a few thousand people living together. As per Fiona and Tyson’s arrangements, all the guests would be sleeping aboard tonight.
So, Cecilia was in a hurry to get an early look and possibly claim a good spot to sleep. Even though Stellerton was a coastal city, she had never actually set foot on a cruise ship, nor seen the sea under the night sky.
The whole experience felt wonderfully fresh.
...
But while Cecilia anxiously waited, the crowd had already started to board one after the other.
Yet she still saw no sign of Adrian Law or Wyatt Law.
Instead, it was Fiona and Tyson who arrived hand in hand—looking like a pair of celestial lovers... well, if you tried really hard to ignore Chloe Alden right beside them.
Chloe was obviously set on playing the bridesmaid. In just these ten-odd minutes, she’d already changed into a peach-pink bridesmaid dress adorned with glittering rhinestones everywhere, almost blinding.
Standing behind Fiona, who was dressed in pure white bridal attire, Chloe’s tacky high-saturation outfit made her look like a newly-rich farmgirl from some backwater village.
...
Cecilia hadn’t expected Fiona to use Chloe to boost her standing even at her own wedding, and couldn’t help but laugh in surprise.
Chloe might be spoiled, but she was genuinely good to Fiona—she’d even introduced her uncle, Station Director Alden of ASC Television, to Fiona herself.
For Chloe to be best friends with someone as devious as Fiona, she must’ve had seven lifetimes’ worth of bad luck.
"Sis, why haven’t you boarded yet?"
Fiona walked over with feigned innocence, her face radiating sweet and genuine concern.
Cecilia’s expression was chilly.
"I’m waiting for someone."
Chloe looked down her nose at Cecilia, practically snorting at the sky.
"Well, well, well, dumped by The Eldest Young Master Law again, huh? Who exactly is that scowl for—your ex?"
"Chloe, don’t say that! Sis will get upset."
Cecilia couldn’t be bothered with Chloe, nor did she have the energy to put on a show of sisterly affection with Fiona. Silently, she just gathered her skirt a little tighter.
——Even though Isle of Whispers was like spring year-round, by evening, the breeze still carried a chill. Cecilia was just wearing a thin dress and felt the wind prick her skin.
...
"Hah, so petty. Wearing a shabby little dress like that to Fiona’s wedding banquet—don’t you feel embarrassed?"
Chloe shot Cecilia a jealous glance, recalling the scene of Cecilia and Adrian Law stepping off the helicopter together and seething with envy.
Cecilia’s pale blue gown might have been understated, but when the sea breeze blew, its trailing magnolia petals fluttered, making her look like a graceful Goddess amid a shower of blossoms.
As long as you weren’t blind, you could appreciate the subtle beauty—it was at least a few leagues classier than Chloe’s gaudy pink getup.
...
Cecilia frowned, about to retort to Chloe when she saw Fiona grab Chloe’s sleeve with a faux-innocent look, casting a supremely sympathetic glance Cecilia’s way.
"Chloe, cut it out. Maybe Mr. Law just doesn’t want to spend money buying Sis a dress. Hey, Sis, if you need a gown, I can lend you one—or better yet, just give it to you."
Cecilia hadn’t expected Fiona to put on this show and shot her a mocking, half-smiling glance.
"Fiona Vaughn, I seem to recall you once begged me to introduce Walter Sinclair to make you a dress. Now, suddenly, an original piece from the retired master tailor is just a ’shabby old thing’ to you and Eldest Miss Alden?"
Fiona’s expression froze.
This is one of Walter Sinclair’s pieces?
She instantly recalled Cecilia’s previous wisteria dress—because she’d carelessly scratched it, she and Tyson ended up compensating for a thirteen-million-dollar limited-edition Maybach!
What was worse, Adrian Law had gifted that Maybach to Wyatt Law on a whim. How could she not be heartbroken?
This open slap in the face practically shattered the poised façade Fiona worked so hard to maintain.
"Is that so? I must’ve mistaken it... Tyson, let’s go. Don’t want to be late. Sis, hurry and follow us on."
Cecilia had waited ages for Adrian, but still had no clue where he and Wyatt had gone.
The seaside wind was growing colder and, after some thought, she chose to board the ship with them, leaving Chloe rolling her eyes so hard they nearly stuck to the ceiling.
...
Once on board and past the coast of Isle of Whispers, with the ceremony about to begin, Adrian was still nowhere to be found. Cecilia couldn’t help feeling a growing sense of unease.
Meanwhile, in the spacious banquet hall on the cruise ship’s third deck, it was a sea of people.
Tyson and Fiona stood beneath an ornate ironwork floral arch, holding hands and gazing into each other’s eyes with deep emotion.
The priest’s smile was radiant with delight.
"Mr. Tyson Law and Miss Fiona Vaughn, may I ask if, from this day forward—whatever comes, wealth or poverty, health or illness—you are willing to walk through life together, hand in hand?"
"I do—"
Tyson smiled broadly, just about to swear his vows.
But suddenly, a deep, cold voice sliced through the joy filling the room.
"Hold on. I’m late, but I’m here!"
