Chapter 70: Disappointing Meeting
Klaus walked into the building of Miracle Law Firm and started looking around with a curious look.
The walls were faintly blue, with plants in pots decorating the sections of it, and at the center was the reception, but instead of directly walking to the young man standing there, he glanced at the various citizens moving in and out of the place.
Some of them looked dispirited, while most had smiles. He guessed it was because they had managed to get a good attorney for their cases; it wasn’t like Miracle Law Firm had bad attorneys in the first place.
Seeing him looking around with no clue, one of the staff members walked over to him and asked, "How can I help you?"
He looked at the staff as though it was his first time seeing one and said respectfully, "I am looking for an attorney called Victor Frank, ma’am."
The staff member furrowed her brows.
Klaus frowned and commented, "Do you not know him?"
She let out a deep sigh. Obviously, she knew who Victor Frank was. He was, after all, one of the best attorneys of his generation, but that wasn’t why she had said anything. It was because this masked man wasn’t the first person asking to meet him without any appointment.
Getting an appointment with Victor was already nearly impossible due to his unbending personality.
So she could understand why one would try to meet him this way, but unfortunately, she could not let him do that.
"I am sorry, but if you don’t have an appointment, then I cannot take you to him."
"Oh..." Klaus’s brows lowered slightly, and then he said, "I do have the appointment, though; you can call him if you want to confirm."
"You do?" The staff member instantly pulled out his phone, and as she was about to call him, Klaus said, "Please tell him that the person is wearing a black mask and hat and wants to talk about the other day."
She furrowed her brows and nodded.
She called Victor Frank, and it was picked up within a few minutes.
"I apologise, but there’s this person who says that he has an appointment with you."
Before the staff member could reply, Klaus pointed a finger at his face and circled it before his head.
’Like that’s going to do anything, she thought and added, "That person is wearing a black mask and a black hat, and he wants to talk about the other day."
A few seconds passed in silence as no words came from the other side, and then Victor said,
Jessica blinked in surprise and nodded, "Alright."
She gave Klaus a quick once-over and then said as she turned around, "Please, follow me."
Klaus nodded while grinning behind his mask and silently followed her.
A few minutes later, he stood before the door to Victor’s office.
Jessica had already left, so he was alone now.
He knocked on the door, and a voice came from inside. "You can enter."
Klaus pushed the door, and his gaze instantly fell on Victor Frank sitting behind a glass office desk.
"It really is you," Victor said with a faint smile.
’Good job, Erick,’ Klaus mumbled inwardly as he stepped in and said, "I wanted to meet you that day, but I didn’t want to get into any trouble."
"Makes sense." Victor nodded and asked, "How can I help you? I already owe you a great favor."
Klaus took the chair before him and suddenly took off his hat and mask before he said, "My name is Klaus Murrow, and my partners and I are currently laying the foundations for a finance firm called Maker Finance."
Victor’s eyes shone in understanding, and he mused, "So if trouble arises, you want me, Victor Frank, to be the one representing your company and you before the court?"
Klaus nodded.
"Mr. Murrow, even though you have done me a great favor, I cannot do that. I only help those who are kind and truly need it."
Klaus didn’t say anything for a few moments, and then he leaned onto the desk and asked, "Would your answer have been the same if I had instead used your son as the bargain?"
Victor’s smile vanished, and he said in a sharp tone, "Do not test my boundaries, Mr. Murrow."
Klaus leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms at his chest as he added, "I just think you are a hypocrite who doesn’t want to help those who have shown you goodwill."
Victor frowned deeply and said, "An act of kindness is done without hoping for a reward."
Klaus shook his head. "The person who brushes off someone’s goodwill with those excuses is not a wise sage nor the proper human he thinks himself to be. Rather, he is greedy."
"I can give you anything else," Victor said.
Klaus rose from his chair and said flatly, "I don’t need anything else."
He turned to the door and added, "Regardless of what you say, you do not value kindness or goodwill. Instead, you weaponise them for your own profit or to save your skin."
Victor fell silent.
"Instead of wasting my time by allowing this visit, you should have just told me to fuck off; at least then I wouldn’t have to see this pathetic side of yours."
"What do you mean...?"
Klaus turned his head to him, his eyes sharp.
"I can see the passion burning in your eyes, but it doesn’t reach your fearful heart. You are ambitious, but that ambition is dying within you instead of flourishing."
He grabbed the door’s handle and pulled it as he added his final words, "People such as you disgust me."
Klaus had expected to see someone who had genuine ambition for what he was doing, but that wasn’t what Victor was. Instead, he was someone who threw away that ambition to reach his current position.
What was the point of a good ending if the journey itself was lackluster?
He stepped out of Victor’s office with a genuinely disdainful look on his face and left the building.
