Chapter 300: The Suspended Heart Finally Dies
Racing all the way, Damien Vaughn and Cecelia Archer brought Candy to the emergency department of Vaughn Hospital.
Cecelia explained the situation to the doctor.
The girl had a rare blood type and a coagulation disorder. She needed a transfusion right away.
As soon as the doctor entered Candy’s name into the system, he remembered.
’Isn’t this the girl who had a hemolytic reaction after President Vaughn’s transfusion?’
’What a coincidence.’
The last time she was brought in, the hospital’s supply of her rare blood type was critically low. Today, the stock was insufficient again.
A patient with the same rare blood type had come in early this morning after a car accident. That single patient had used over two thousand milliliters.
Damien Vaughn exploded with rage. "How do you people run this place? Every time we come, you say the blood supply is critical. Do you even want your jobs?"
The doctor explained, "This blood type is extremely rare to begin with, so we don’t keep a large stock. With so many car accident victims every day... we can’t help it, President Vaughn..."
"Cut the crap! Take my blood! I have the same blood type as her. Hurry up!"
The doctor was speechless.
Cecelia remembered, too.
The last time Damien gave Candy a transfusion, she’d had a hemolytic reaction.
’Even though I still don’t know why, Damien can’t be the one.’
"No, you can’t use his blood."
"Just focus on stopping the bleeding for now! Put in an emergency request for a transfer! You can’t use his blood!"
’Why?’
Damien grabbed Cecelia’s hand, about to ask why his blood couldn’t be used, when Gwen Morgan rushed over in a panic.
"Damien! I finally found you! You have to go see your grandfather, he’s in critical condition! He collapsed and coughed up a lot of blood!"
"What? When did this happen?"
"Just now, on the rooftop. He collapsed right after you left. The doctors are trying to save him, and they need a family member to sign some forms. You need to go over there, quickly!"
Hearing how serious the situation with his grandfather was, Cecelia also urged Damien to go.
"You should go. I’m here with Candy. Your grandfather is the priority."
Damien couldn’t bring himself to leave Candy and Cecelia, but he couldn’t abandon his grandfather either.
He squeezed Cecelia’s hand tightly.
"Call me the second anything happens. I’ll be back as soon as I can."
"I know."
"I’m going, then."
"Okay."
Damien looked down at the unconscious Candy and quickly planted a kiss on her cheek.
"Let’s go!"
Gwen Morgan was stunned.
Racing to the door of his grandfather’s trauma room like a gust of wind, Damien asked a nurse about his condition, signed the consent forms, and started calling his second and third uncles.
"Grandfather isn’t well. He’s at the hospital, and they’re trying to save him now. You two need to get over here right away."
Then, for the first time in his life, he looked at Gwen Morgan with gratitude in his eyes.
"I owe you for today. I’ll remember everything you’ve done for me. I’m sorry to make you wait, but please stay here for a bit. I’m going to go check on them, and I’ll be back once things have stabilized."
"Damien..."
Just a moment ago, she’d been upset about how he’d defended Cecelia, but the next second, meeting his heartfelt gaze, Gwen Morgan felt her head spin again.
She clutched his arm, unwilling to let go. "I..."
Damien knew what she wanted to say.
At this moment, he finally realized how much he had wronged her.
He reached out, patted her on the shoulder, and said with genuine sincerity,
"You’re my only female friend, and a woman I respect deeply. I will always cherish our friendship. Gwen, I’m sorry. And thank you."
Damien then strode back toward Candy’s room.
Just as he was about to rush into the treatment room, he ran right into the doctor who was coming out.
"President Vaughn."
The doctor saw him and looked like he wanted to say something but was holding back.
Damien, thinking something was wrong, demanded, "What is it? Spit it out!"
The doctor replied, "We’ve sent someone to make an emergency blood transfer. They’re stopping the bleeding now. The wound isn’t very large, so she’s not in any immediate danger. You don’t have to worry too much."
Damien breathed a sigh of relief. "Understood. I’m going in to see her."
As he started to leave, the doctor took a chance and stopped him.
"President Vaughn, there’s something... I’m not sure if I should tell you."
’Didn’t I just tell him to stop hesitating?’
Damien was in no mood to dither. He frowned.
"I’ll say it again: spit it out!"
"The last time you gave Candy Archer a blood transfusion, she had a severe hemolytic reaction. I’m not sure if the attending physician informed you of this."
Damien wasn’t a medical professional, so he didn’t understand the term.
"What’s a hemolytic reaction?"
"It’s a type of severe rejection. Her body couldn’t accept your blood..."
Damien had no idea. ’That audacious attending physician never told me!’
"That really happened?"
"Yes. There are many possible causes for a hemolytic reaction, and I can’t be certain which one it is at the moment. However, I’ve noticed that your facial features are remarkably similar to Candy Archer’s, which makes me wonder..."
"Are you ever going to get to the point?"
Seeing his impatient expression, the doctor steeled himself and spoke his mind.
"I’m guessing... could she be your daughter? Because in medicine, transfusions between biological parents and their children are forbidden."
"What?"
Damien’s mind went blank, and he wondered if he had misheard.
"Say that again!"
The doctor quickly explained it to him all over again.
"Have you and the child’s mother ever had... that kind of relationship? If you have, then I believe it’s highly likely you are her biological father. If that’s the case, we would just need to run a DNA test to confirm the true cause of the hemolytic reaction. Otherwise, the girl could have other underlying conditions, and screening for all of them would take a very long time."
Damien’s heart pounded in his chest as his mind was pulled back to a time long ago.
Four years ago, he had indeed met Cecelia at a club in DL.
"What’s the fastest we can get results from a test?"
"At least a full day. We should have the results by this time tomorrow."
By the time his second and third uncles arrived at the hospital, the Old Master had already been wheeled out of the trauma room.
He had passed out from a fit of rage.
The doctor warned them, "The patient has a history of stroke, and his blood pressure and heart condition are unstable. He cannot afford to get agitated again, or else... You must make sure he gets complete bed rest."
The second and third uncles looked at their drowsy father lying in the bed, then pulled Gwen Morgan aside to ask what had made him so angry. Afterward, they told her to go home.
"You’ve worked hard, always running around for our family’s trivial matters. We can handle the rest from here. You should go home and get some rest."
Damien had rejected her so bluntly, and even the Old Master couldn’t rein him in. With her hopes completely dashed, Gwen left the hospital room without a second glance.
The moment she was gone, the second and third uncles began to conspire.
"Damien already knows about our affairs. He even threatened to settle the score with me on the second day of the New Year. Third Brother, if I’m going down, you’re going down with me. Rather than wait for him to make his move, we should strike first."
"Dad’s getting old and senile, protecting him at every turn. As long as he’s alive, that brat Damien will have us under his thumb..."
"Second Brother, so... what are you suggesting?"
"I think Dad has lived long enough. Rather than letting him suffer in a hospital bed, it would be better for him to... find peace..."
