Chapter 299: I Won’t Allow Anyone to Hurt Her
Damien Vaughn couldn’t believe his grandfather would do something so absurd.
If Candy hadn’t secretly sent him an SOS message from her watch phone, the consequences would have been unthinkable.
’I finally got here and stopped this whole farce, and he still won’t give up?’
"Grandfather."
After the old man finished his tirade, Damien Vaughn looked at him, utterly exhausted.
"My mother’s death is in the past. Why can’t you let it go? Will throwing them off this roof bring Mom back to life? Do you think you won’t be held responsible? Why do you insist on making things more complicated? You’re at an age where you should be enjoying a peaceful retirement. I am capable of handling this. Why must you drag yourself into this vortex of hatred?"
Old Mr. Vaughn couldn’t believe Damien Vaughn would say something so outrageous.
’It’s true, throwing the mother and daughter off wouldn’t bring his daughter-in-law back to life. So that meant he should just tolerate them?’
’By his grandson’s logic, no murderer should ever have to pay for their crimes. After all, the victim is already gone, so what’s the point in punishing the killer!’
"But Cecelia Archer isn’t a murderer!"
For some reason, Damien Vaughn was full of conviction as he swore to his grandfather.
"Cecelia absolutely isn’t. Can’t you trust me, just this once?"
’If he’d actually been there, it might be forgivable for him to say something like that. But he had been all the way in Norport.’
His own mother had been murdered, yet here he was, adamantly defending the culprit. Old Mr. Vaughn was so furious he could only laugh.
"I thought you were just blinded by some woman, but now I see you’ve lost your mind completely! Damien Vaughn, you are a profound disappointment. For a woman with a bastard child, you’ve not only betrayed your own mother, but you’ve also turned yourself into a fool. How did I end up with such a brainless, wretched excuse for a grandson!"
Damien Vaughn didn’t want to go around in circles.
"We’ve reached this point. There’s nothing more to say. As far as I’m concerned, Cecelia is innocent, and I won’t let anyone harm her."
"Disown me, kick me out of the Vaughn Family—I’ll accept it all. I am never leaving her again."
"You! You think I don’t have the guts to deal with you? You’re threatening me? For her, you’d throw away the Vaughn Family? Very well! A wretched grandson like you is useless to me. Go to hell with them!"
As he spoke, the old man shouted at the security guards behind him.
"All of you, get over here! Throw them all off!"
No one dared to move.
The old man was clearly speaking out of anger. This was the president of the Vaughn Group, after all.
When Old Mr. Vaughn saw them standing still, his anger reached a boiling point.
Gritting his teeth, he actually stood up from his wheelchair.
He pointed his cane at the group of security guards.
"Are you all deaf?! Don’t you want your jobs anymore? If you don’t, then scram! I’ll get on the phone and have you all replaced right now!"
He had put it that way. No one wanted to lose their job, especially not this well-paying, low-stress position with the Vaughn Family.
’He couldn’t really mean to harm President Vaughn. It’s just a scare tactic.’ With that thought, everyone rushed forward.
Damien Vaughn maintained his posture, one arm holding Candy, the other around Cecelia, not moving an inch.
Several bodyguards worked together, snatching Candy from his arms and restraining both him and Cecelia.
Damien Vaughn still didn’t resist, watching the old man with a blank expression.
"Are you sure about this, Grandfather? If you go through with it, the bond between us as grandfather and grandson is well and truly over."
’Even now, he’s still so stubborn? Still defying me?’
The old man slammed his cane on the ground several times and roared with all his might.
"What are you standing around for? Throw the little bastard first! Throw that little bastard off right now!"
The bodyguard holding Candy immediately turned and rushed toward the edge of the rooftop.
He moved so fast that Candy felt the wind whistling past her ears, and she burst into terrified tears in his arms.
"Ahh! Daddy! Mommy! I’m scared! Help, Daddy! No! Help me, Daddy!"
Damien Vaughn clenched his jaw, his fists tightening. He was about to lose control.
"Grandfather!"
Seeing the look of restraint on his face, seeing that he still wanted to defend that brat, made the old man even more furious.
"You want to play tough with me? Damien Vaughn, I’ve eaten more salt than you’ve eaten rice! Go on! Even if it costs me my life today, I will not let that woman win! Hurry up and throw her!"
The bodyguard was stunned.
’He really wants me to throw her?’
’This is a person’s life. A scare tactic should be enough.’
"Sir..."
"I told you to throw her, so throw her! You won’t be responsible for the consequences! Hurry!"
Despite his words, the bodyguard, holding Candy suspended over the edge, still didn’t dare to act.
Candy’s little hands desperately clung to his neck, her feet kicking against his body, her survival instinct pushed to the absolute limit.
Accidentally, her calf hooked onto his watch strap.
With a cry, a cut was gouged into her delicate calf.
Candy cried even more wretchedly.
"It hurts! Put me down, my leg is bleeding. Mommy, save me..."
’Before Damien arrived, Cecelia hadn’t been sure if Old Mr. Vaughn really intended to kill her. But now, she understood. This was a psychological battle with Damien; he didn’t actually want them dead.’
’She could have remained calm and waited for the situation to resolve itself. But then she heard Candy say her leg was bleeding.’
"Candy’s leg is bleeding? No, we have to get her to the hospital immediately! Damien, her platelet count has been low again recently. The bleeding won’t stop!"
’What?’
This time, the bodyguard was truly terrified. He pulled back, still holding Candy, and put her on the ground.
"I can’t do this. Sorry, sir. Everyone, back off!"
At his command, the bodyguards all shuffled back to a clear area on the side.
Damien Vaughn and Cecelia Archer immediately turned and ran toward Candy.
Damien Vaughn scooped Candy into his arms. Cecelia Archer lifted her pant leg to look; her calf was already bright red with blood.
Luckily, Damien Vaughn was wearing a crisp suit and tie today. Cecelia quickly pulled off his tie and fastened it tightly around Candy’s wound.
"Hurry! Let’s go!"
Seeing that the bodyguards were no longer cooperating, the old man tried to block them with his own frail body, but Damien Vaughn easily dodged him.
"Grandfather, can you please stop making a scene? We can talk after I’ve dealt with this!"
"From now on, don’t let him get away with these tantrums! Get him home now!"
Damien Vaughn gave the bodyguards this one instruction and then hurried downstairs, carrying Candy.
Gwen Morgan watched this farce, which had started and ended so quickly. Seeing with her own eyes the extent to which Damien Vaughn protected Cecelia Archer, the hope she’d been holding onto finally died.
The cold wind on the rooftop chilled her to the core.
"Old Mr. Vaughn, I assume there’s nothing else for me here? In that case, I’ll be leaving."
’Old Mr. Vaughn?’
’Even Gwen Morgan thinks it’s a lost cause and has given up on Damien? She’s actually calling me Old Mr. Vaughn now?’
With a strangled sound, the old man clutched his chest, collapsed heavily to the ground, and spat out a mouthful of fresh blood.
"Sir! Sir!"
