Chapter 245: Living Canyon (Part 2)
The Battlefield Itself
The enormous tree kept pulling itself free from the earth, roots tearing through solid stone as it rose. The surrounding cliffs shifted in response, entire rock formations rotating on some hidden axis. Bridges rose out of nothing. Others collapsed without warning. The whole arena reshaped itself around Kai and Sera in real time.
Sera exhaled slowly. "...The whole arena..."
Kai nodded, watching the bark crack and split, roots twisting together as stone fused directly into the creature’s forming body. "...Is the boss."
The thing finally stood to its full height, canyon walls groaning under the sheer scale of it.
[Worldroot Colossus – Level 63.]
Kai smiled. "So that’s what’s been controlling the canyon this whole time."
...
The Colossus didn’t attack directly. Instead, its roots slammed into the ground, and entire sections of the arena rose in response. Stone pillars erupted beneath Kai without warning. The ground under Sera simply gave way into a sinkhole.
Neither of them panicked. Kai leaped onto the nearest rising pillar mid-collapse. Sera let herself fall on purpose, catching the momentum and using her shield to launch herself back up through the opening before it sealed.
The Colossus finally swung one massive limb. Kai deflected it with a full-body brace. Sera countered from the side, shield ringing off root-wrapped bark.
The fight had officially begun.
Kai’s eyes narrowed as the terrain shifted again beneath his feet. "...It’s forcing movement."
Sera nodded, already adjusting her stance to the new footing. "It’s deciding where we fight before we even get there."
...
The battle escalated fast. Instead of repeating any pattern, the arena kept reinventing itself. Roots erupted into walls mid-swing. Stone bridges buckled and dropped away underfoot. Wind currents reversed without warning. Entire trees grew from bare rock in seconds. Boulders rained down from cliffs that hadn’t existed a minute earlier.
The battlefield never held the same shape for more than a few moments at a time.
Kai stopped trying to memorize any of it early on. There was no point.
Instead, he started reading the rhythm underneath the chaos.
"It’s adapting," he called over the grinding stone.
Sera laughed, vaulting over a root that whipped past where her legs had been. "So are we."
The fight turned into something closer to solving a puzzle mid-combat, every environmental attack teaching them a fraction more of the pattern hiding underneath the randomness.
...
One of the elite root guardians finally collapsed under a combined strike, its body dissolving into loose stone and splintered wood.
[Distortion Applied.]
[Drop Quality: Optimized.]
A Worldroot Crystal rolled free from the wreckage, along with a Resonance Seed still faintly pulsing and a strip of Living Mana Bark.
Kai scooped up the crystal and studied it for a moment, turning it slowly in his palm. "...Another environmental catalyst." He tucked it away. "We’ll show Lily."
...
The Colossus entered its second phase without warning, and instead of controlling the battlefield piece by piece, it seemed to simply merge with it entirely. Every step it took shifted the cliffs. Every roar redirected the wind currents. Every twitch of a root reshaped the ground beneath their feet.
Kai suddenly stopped attacking mid-exchange.
Sera noticed immediately, catching a swipe on her shield without him beside her. "...Kai?"
He wasn’t watching the boss anymore. He was watching everything around it.
"...It’s not controlling all of this individually," he said slowly.
"What do you mean?"
"It’s issuing one command." His eyes tracked a wall rising in perfect sync with a bridge collapsing thirty feet away. "The environment is responding on its own after that."
Sera’s eyes widened as it clicked into place for her too. "...Like the relic network we’ve been building."
"Exactly," Kai said, something sharpening in his expression that had nothing to do with the fight anymore.
...
He changed strategy entirely from that point. Instead of chasing the Colossus directly, he started attacking the environment it depended on, deliberately severing support roots anchoring the canyon walls in place.
Sera caught on instantly, redirecting an incoming root strike into an already-unstable cliff face instead of blocking it outright, letting the terrain finish the job for her.
The canyon slowly turned against its own creator. The Colossus’s movements grew visibly slower, its attacks losing the crisp coordination they’d had at the start of the fight.
Kai smiled. "There."
Sera didn’t need to be told twice. She drove her shield into one final cluster of support roots, and the arena lurched unexpectedly, the ground beneath the Colossus buckling all at once.
It stumbled.
Kai was already moving. One perfect strike split the glowing core running through the center of its trunk clean open.
Silence.
The giant collapsed slowly, and as it fell, the entire canyon finally stopped moving around them, cliffs settling, bridges freezing in whatever shape they’d last held.
[Dungeon Cleared.]
[Distortion Applied.]
[Boss Defeated.]
[Reward Quality: Optimized.]
A Worldroot Heart pulsed on the ground where the Colossus had fallen. Beside it sat the Colossus Core, a Living Earth Crystal, a faintly glowing Nature Authority Fragment, and an Ancient Resonance Stone.
Even Kai paused at the sight of it. "...That’s incredible."
...
Experience flooded in a moment later.
[Level Up.]
[Level 61 Reached.]
Kai smiled quietly to himself.
Sera stretched her arms overhead. "...Two B-Ranks."
"...Two levels."
Kai nodded, gathering the last of the drops by hand into his pack. "The growth’s slowing down."
"But it’s still moving," Sera said.
...
They stepped back out of the Gate into an afternoon that felt strangely calm after the constantly shifting battlefield behind them. A handful of city workers came by with a cart to help carry the heavier materials, but Kai barely registered any of it, still turning the fight over in his head.
Sera glanced at him. "...Thinking again?"
He nodded slowly. "It wasn’t the monster."
She waited.
"It was the battlefield." He looked back toward the Gate, already sealing shut behind them. "The Colossus wasn’t manually controlling every root individually."
"It sent one command," he continued, "and the entire canyon reacted together, on its own."
Silence held for a second.
Then his eyes widened. "...That’s it."
Sera blinked. "What?"
"The relics." His expression lit up in a way Sera hadn’t seen since they’d first opened the vault beneath the Archive. "We’ve been trying to simulate each one separately." He shook his head. "That’s wrong."
He gestured back toward the Gate. "They should be responding to each other. One activation triggering another. Relics supporting relics. Layers. Chains." He paused, the idea clearly still forming as he spoke it out loud. "A living battlefield."
"The city shouldn’t need someone directing every single relic by hand," he went on. "It should react automatically. Just like this dungeon did."
Sera’s own eyes widened slowly as the implication settled in. "...That would make the whole system faster."
Kai nodded eagerly. "And far more adaptable than anything we’ve tested so far."
He looked out toward the skyline of Mythal in the distance, still turning it over.
"We need to tell Lily."
A grin spread across his face, sudden and genuine.
"I think we just found the missing piece."
