Chapter 244: Living Canyon (Part 1)

The Gate rippled as they stepped through.

[Dungeon Found.]

[Living Canyon — B Rank.]

Then, crossing the threshold:

[B-Rank Dungeon: Active.]

Warm air replaced the city’s cool morning breeze the instant they crossed over. The dungeon opened up around them on an enormous scale, towering cliffs rising hundreds of meters overhead, massive stone arches bridging gaps that shouldn’t have been physically possible to span. Ancient trees clung stubbornly to the canyon walls at impossible angles.

Everything about it felt alive.

Kai knelt briefly, pressing a palm flat against the stone. It vibrated faintly under his hand. "...Did you feel that?"

Sera nodded. "It almost felt like a heartbeat."

Far ahead, stone shifted with a low grinding sound, not from any earthquake.

Something beneath it had moved on its own.

...

They hadn’t even encountered a monster yet when the ground tilted sharply beneath them, entire slabs of rock rotating like massive gears.

Kai jumped backward on instinct. A moment later, boulders came rolling down the canyon walls, not tumbling naturally, but aimed with clear intent.

Kai sliced one clean in half mid-roll. Sera smashed another aside with her shield.

Then the broken rock split open, and Stone Crawlers pulled themselves free from the rubble.

[Stone Crawler – Level 59.]

Unlike ordinary monsters, they never attacked directly. Every strike they made instead reshaped the battlefield around them. Walls erupted where open ground had been. Paths vanished mid-step. What looked like natural cover turned into deliberate traps a heartbeat later.

Kai smiled. "...Interesting."

A wall of stone erupted directly between him and Sera, and she braced against it. "They’re trying to separate us."

Kai simply walked straight through the collapsing stone before it finished forming, shouldering through loose rubble like it was nothing. "Then let’s not let them."

The fight turned into one of positioning instead of raw force. Rather than chasing the Crawlers directly, Kai started tearing apart the terrain they depended on, collapsing their prepared walls before they could finish forming. Sera repeatedly forced them out of advantageous ground, denying them the high points and choke points they kept trying to retreat toward.

Stripped of their battlefield, the Crawlers fell fast.

Materials scattered across the broken ground where the last one had fallen: a Living Stone Core, still faintly warm. An Earth Resonance Crystal, humming softly. A Geo Catalyst. Several chunks of Hardened Canyon Ore.

Kai picked up the Earth Resonance Crystal and turned it over in his palm, feeling it pulse faintly against his skin. "...This reacts to mana pressure."

Sera noticed the rhythm immediately. "Like the battlefield relic?"

"Very similar," Kai said, tucking it carefully into his pack.

They kept moving deeper, and Kai’s attention kept drifting away from the path ahead toward the canyon itself.

Sera noticed. "You’re studying the dungeon."

Kai nodded. "The relics."

"What about them?"

He gestured at a section of wall reshaping itself a short distance away. "We’ve been treating relics like weapons."

Another stretch of canyon sealed shut behind them without warning, and Kai watched it happen with real interest instead of alarm.

"But this dungeon isn’t fighting us directly." He turned the thought over out loud. "...It’s making the battlefield fight us instead."

Sera considered that for a moment. "...So instead of attacking Tiamat directly..."

"our city attacks Tiamat," Kai finished.

He smiled. "Exactly."

The canyon narrowed into a tight passage, wind whistling sharp between the towering walls on either side. Without warning, the wind reversed direction entirely, and three shapes dropped out of the sky above them.

[Gale Raptor]

[Level 60.]

They never closed the distance to attack directly. Instead they manipulated the air itself, powerful gusts hurling loose rock across the canyon floor, dust kicking up thick enough to blind, shards of stone whipping through the air like arrows.

Kai deflected several with quick, precise strikes. Sera planted her shield and anchored herself against the worst of the gale.

"They’re using the wind," she called over the roar.

Kai’s eyes narrowed, tracking the pattern in the chaos. "No. They’re controlling where we’re forced to stand."

The realization changed his entire approach. Instead of fighting through the wind, he started reading it, predicting the next gust before it hit and deliberately stepping into spaces the Raptors hadn’t accounted for. Sera followed his lead instantly, matching his movement without needing an explanation.

The Raptors lost control of their own battlefield within seconds. Kai cut the first one down mid-dive. Sera caught the second before it could pull up. The third tried to flee, banking hard toward the open sky.

Kai’s blade reached it first.

More materials landed among the settling dust: Gale Feathers still catching faint drafts of their own. A Cyclone Crystal spinning slowly in place. A Wind Core. A Sky Resonance Stone.

Sera picked one up, weighing it in her hand. "...Another battlefield material."

Kai nodded, already gathering the rest. "I’m seeing a pattern."

...

The canyon opened suddenly into an ancient forest, sunlight barely reaching the ground through the dense canopy overhead. Everything went quiet.

Too quiet.

Kai slowed immediately. "Wait."

Nothing happened for three full seconds.

Then the roots exploded upward all at once, and the trees themselves began to move, not monsters hiding among them, but the forest itself reshaping around several Vine Stalkers pulling free from the undergrowth.

[Vine Stalker]

[Level 60.]

Unlike the earlier monsters, these never pursued directly either. The forest fought on their behalf instead. Branches whipped across sightlines. Roots split the ground into separate battlefields mid-fight. Entire trees toppled to force sudden changes in footing.

Kai smiled, cutting through a curtain of vines that had dropped in front of him. "They’re thinking."

Sera sliced through another wall of growth blocking her path. "So are we."

The fight became another lesson in the same pattern, Kai clearing terrain before engaging the actual monsters, refusing to let the forest dictate the fight. Eventually the whole grove went still again, the last Vine Stalker collapsing into a heap of severed roots.

The forest floor held an abundance of rare growth once the fighting stopped. Living Wood, still faintly warm to the touch. Wind Fruit hanging heavy on low branches. Earth Seeds buried just beneath the surface. Geo Vines wound tightly around fallen logs. Resonance Bark peeling naturally off ancient trunks. Spirit Sap collecting in slow, glowing drops along broken branches.

Kai and Sera harvested carefully by hand, working through the grove methodically.

Sera laughed, tucking another handful of Spirit Sap vials into her bag. "Lily’s workshop is going to get even bigger at this rate."

Kai nodded, cutting free a length of Geo Vine. "She’ll probably need another building soon."

He paused, looking around at the quiet forest. "...Every dungeon really is different."

Sera smiled. "And every one teaches us something new."

...

As they pushed on, the dungeon grew steadily more aggressive around them. Entire cliff faces shifted position without warning. Bridges rotated slowly on some hidden axis. Stone pillars rose fresh out of the ground where nothing had stood a moment earlier. Old paths simply vanished, replaced by new ones that hadn’t existed a minute before.

It felt intentional in a way that unsettled even Kai a little.

"Imagine if the city could do this," he said quietly, watching a bridge fold itself into a new shape ahead of them.

Sera understood immediately. "Tiamat would never be fighting the same battlefield twice."

Kai nodded slowly. "The city itself would keep reshaping around her the entire fight."

For the first time since they’d started this expedition, the Disaster Plan sitting in the back of his mind shifted again, not through some new relic they hadn’t seen yet, but through combining pieces they already had in a completely different arrangement.

Eventually the canyon opened into an enormous circular basin, ringed by ancient stone pillars surrounding a colossal tree growing straight out of the solid rock at its center. Its roots vanished deep beneath the canyon floor, and visible streams of mana gathered around its trunk in slow, deliberate currents.

Kai studied the entire arena. No monsters waited here.

Just the environment itself, and something underneath it.

The roots shifted slowly beneath the ground. The surrounding cliffs creaked. Leaves rustled overhead despite there being no wind at all to move them.

Sera looked around carefully, weight shifting onto the balls of her feet. "...Something’s wrong."

Kai nodded slowly, watching the massive tree’s roots begin pulling free from the earth one after another. "This dungeon isn’t waiting for us anymore."

A deep groan rolled up from beneath the basin floor, and the enormous tree began turning, slow and deliberate, toward the center of the arena where they stood. The surrounding canyon walls started shifting in sync with it, stone grinding against stone.

Kai raised his sword slowly, eyes fixed on the awakening tree.

"Looks like the second half is starting."
