Chapter 243: Frozen Stone Caverns (2)
The tunnels widened as Kai and Sera pushed deeper, opening into enormous underground caverns. Crystal formations stretched from floor to ceiling in jagged columns, catching the ambient light and scattering it in fractured blue patterns across the walls. Frozen waterfalls hung motionless mid-cascade, and the mana in the air grew noticeably heavier with every step.
The silence had changed too. Before, it had felt peaceful.
Now it felt like something was watching.
Sera smiled slightly. "...The dungeon finally woke up."
Kai nodded. "So did the monsters."
A distant roar rolled through the cavern, low and resonant. Neither of them picked up their pace. They just kept walking.
...
The cavern shook without warning, and entire sections of crystal wall began to move.
They weren’t walls.
Three enormous Crystal Behemoths tore free from the cavern rock itself, towering shapes glinting under the pale light.
[Crystal Behemoth – Level 60.]
Instead of charging, all three slammed their fists into the ground at once, and crystal spikes erupted across the entire battlefield in a jagged wave.
"Don’t jump," Kai said, already changing direction.
Sera didn’t need the explanation. The spikes beneath where they’d have landed detonated a heartbeat later, sending shards raining across the cavern floor.
They wove through the crystal maze together, Kai cutting into exposed joints between armor plates, Sera repeatedly redirecting the Behemoths into each other’s path until momentum did the work neither of them wanted to do the hard way. Instead of overpowering the creatures directly, they simply let the Behemoths destroy their own defenses trying to catch something faster than they were.
One finally collapsed, its crystalline body cracking apart and scattering across the ground.

A pile of materials clattered onto the stone where it had fallen: a High Grade Ice Core, still faintly glowing. A Crystal Giant Bone, thick and pale. A Frost Mana Crystal humming with cold energy.
Sera knelt and gathered them into her pack by hand, one piece at a time. "...Lily’s going to disappear into her workshop for another week."
Kai laughed, finishing the second Behemoth with a clean strike before it could recover its footing. "Probably longer."
...
The path ahead simply disappeared, swallowed by a massive underground river cutting straight through the cavern floor. Floating chunks of ice drifted slowly across black water, spaced just far enough apart to make crossing awkward.
Kai stepped onto the nearest one, and it cracked immediately under his weight.
Sera raised an eyebrow. "...Trap?"
"They want us moving," Kai said, already stepping to the next platform before the first one gave way completely.
Right on cue, Frozen Serpents erupted from beneath the surface, scattering water and ice in every direction.
[Frozen Serpent – Level 60.]
The fight turned into pure movement after that. Kai never stayed on a single platform longer than a heartbeat, weaving between them as ice cracked and shattered behind every step. Sera deliberately smashed several platforms herself, funneling the serpents into predictable lanes she could pick apart one at a time.
It became almost rhythmic. Jump, strike, land, jump again, the two of them moving in perfect sync without needing to call out a single instruction.
The last serpent went down with a final splash, sinking beneath the churning water.

More materials washed up onto the nearest ice shelf: a Frozen Serpent Fang, curved and razor sharp. An Ice Venom Sac, still pulsing faintly. A Deep Frost Scale catching the light in shifting blues.
Kai bent down and collected them one at a time, tucking them carefully into his own pack.
...
The dungeon quieted again as they kept walking, the sound of dripping ice the only thing breaking the silence.
"...Still thinking about the simulations?" Sera asked.
Kai nodded. "I don’t think I’ll stop anytime soon."
She smiled. "Good."
He glanced over. "I thought you’d tell me to relax."
She laughed. "We’re literally relaxing right now."
She gestured at the frozen cavern stretching around them, at the scattered crystal remains of three dead Behemoths.
"This is a B-Rank dungeon."
Kai chuckled. "...Fair point."
...
The next cavern opened into something genuinely beautiful. Crystal trees rose from the stone floor in delicate branching shapes, mana flowers blooming faintly between them, frozen vines wrapped around outcroppings glittering with trapped light. Rare herbs grew directly out of the glowing rock itself.
Kai stopped at the entrance. "...Resource chamber."
No monsters waited here. Only treasure.
They spent several minutes harvesting by hand, carefully cutting free Frost Spirit Moss from the walls, plucking Crystal Blooms whole from their stems, chipping loose chunks of Blue Mana Ore, collecting Ancient Frozen Sap in small vials, and cutting an entire cluster of Ice Lotus flowers at the root.
Sera packed everything away methodically. "We’ve officially reached the point where the dungeon boss isn’t even the most valuable thing down here."
Kai nodded, tucking the last Ice Lotus into his bag. "The researchers back home would agree with you."
...
The crystal garden exploded the moment they turned to leave, an entire pack of monsters bursting up from beneath the roots where they’d been lying in wait.
Not one monster.
Ten.
[Crystal Assassin – Level 61.]
Unlike everything else in the dungeon so far, these coordinated. They struck from blind spots, chained attacks together in overlapping waves designed to overwhelm rather than simply outmuscle.
Kai smiled. "...Finally."
Sera was already moving, no hesitation at all.
The fight that followed moved faster than anything before it, quick exchanges, minimal words, two people who’d clearly done this exact dance a hundred times over dismantling a coordinated ambush piece by piece. One assassin lunged from Kai’s blind side and never made it within range before Sera’s shield caught it mid-leap. Another tried flanking Sera and found Kai already there waiting.
When the last one finally dropped, its crystalline form shattering across the stone floor, the whole chamber went quiet again.

Several rare cores rolled free among the wreckage, along with a cluster of Assassin Crystals still humming faintly with stealth-oriented mana.
Kai crouched down and gathered them into his hands. "Those’ll sell well."
...
They continued on, and the conversation between them thinned down to almost nothing, replaced by something that didn’t need words at all.
"Right," Kai said once, and Sera’s shield was already up before he finished the syllable.
"Above," Sera said another time, and Kai had already left the ground before she got the word out.
"Three," Kai called out once more, and Sera immediately knew exactly which three he meant without a single second of confusion.
Years of fighting side by side had worn the space between them down to almost nothing.
...
The temperature dropped again as they walked, and a massive frozen lake opened up ahead of them, mist hanging low over its surface. Broken pillars rose out of the ice at odd angles, remnants of something older than the dungeon itself.
Kai stopped at the edge. "...Boss room."
Sera stretched her arms overhead. "Good." She smiled. "I was wondering when we’d actually have to work today."
Kai laughed. "I was thinking the exact same thing."
Ahead of them, enormous doors carved into the ice began grinding open on their own.
...
The Frozen Tyrant Drake waited beyond the doors, massive and ancient, ice crackling along its scales with every slow breath.
[Frozen Tyrant Drake – Level 63.]
The first phase hit hard and heavy, brutal melee swings paired with bursts of freezing breath that turned the ground beneath them to solid ice mid-fight. Kai and Sera adapted immediately, footing shifting constantly to avoid getting locked in place.
The frozen lake shattered halfway through the fight, the Drake smashing straight through it in a fit of frustration, and suddenly the entire battlefield became unstable, chunks of ice bobbing and cracking under every footstep. Kai and Sera turned the chaos into an advantage instead of fighting against it, using the shifting platforms the same way they’d used the river crossing earlier.
Then the Drake entered its final phase, crystal armor spreading across its body in jagged plates, mana erupting outward in a visible pressure wave. Its speed doubled almost instantly.
Kai smiled. "There you are."
The real fight started there. Sera anchored the Drake’s attention, absorbing hit after hit on her shield while Kai circled and struck the same fracture point over and over, small amounts of damage accumulating with every pass instead of trying to force one enormous blow through solid crystal armor.
Eventually Sera caught one final devastating charge dead on her shield, boots skidding back across the ice, and Kai appeared beside the Drake’s exposed chest a half-second later.
One perfect strike.
The crystal armor shattered outward in a spray of fragments. The Drake froze mid-motion, then collapsed onto the broken ice with a sound like a mountain settling.
Silence.
[Dungeon Cleared.]
[Distortion Applied.]
[Boss Defeated.]
[Reward Quality: Optimized.]
A massive pile of loot dropped onto the ice where the Drake had fallen: the Tyrant Drake Core, still radiating cold. An S-Rank Frost Crystal, easily the largest either of them had seen up close. A Frozen Dragon Scale the size of a shield. An Ancient Ice Heart pulsing faintly with its own internal light.
Kai crouched down and started gathering everything by hand, item by item.
Even he raised an eyebrow at the pile forming in front of him. "...Now that’s worth clearing."
...
Blue windows flooded in around them as they finished collecting everything.
[Level Up.]
[Level 60 Reached.]
Kai smiled slightly.
Sera laughed. "Took long enough."
Kai nodded, tying off the last pack. "...The higher you go, the slower it gets."
Still, another step forward.
...
Warm sunlight greeted them the moment they stepped back through the Gate, the freezing cavern air replaced instantly by the familiar heat of a Mythal afternoon.
Association staff hurried forward the second they emerged, several carts rolling up to help haul away everything Kai and Sera had carried out by hand. One young employee stared at the growing pile as Kai unloaded the last of it from his own pack.
"...That’s another incredible haul."
Another muttered under his breath, "I’ve never seen a B-Rank Dungeon produce this many high-quality drops in one run."
Kai barely registered either comment. His attention had settled on the neatly stacked materials instead, the Tyrant Drake Core, the Ancient Ice Heart, the S-Rank Frost Crystal, all of it destined for Lily’s research center before the sun went down.
Sera noticed him staring. "...Thinking?"
Kai nodded absently. "...Something just occurred to me."
She waited.
"The previous civilizations left behind plans." He looked toward the loaded carts. "They also left behind relics."
A pause.
"But every plan depended on resources to actually build."
Sera nodded slowly. "The chains. The healing arrays. The city network. All of it needed materials to construct in the first place."
Kai’s gaze drifted up toward the open sky above Mythal.
"...Distortion," he said quietly.
Sera blinked. "What about it?"
"My Distortion always pushes rewards toward the best possible outcome for whatever fight I’m in." His eyes returned to the mountain of drops still being loaded onto the carts. "If ordinary B-Rank Dungeons can produce resources like these just from Distortion optimizing the drops..."
He trailed off, thinking it through.
"...then maybe there are relics out there. Materials. Things the previous civilizations never actually found, because none of them had anything like this working in their favor."
Silence settled between them. Not certainty.
Possibility.
Sera glanced back at the loaded carts. "So you’re thinking more dungeon clears."
Kai nodded. "Not because we need the experience anymore." He smiled faintly. "Because we might find something out there that makes the plan better."
He paused. "Maybe C-Ranks. A few more B-Ranks. We genuinely don’t know what’s still sitting out there unclaimed."
Sera smiled. "...I like that idea." She looked toward the city skyline ahead of them. "If Distortion keeps finding the best possible rewards every time, then every single dungeon we clear could end up strengthening Mythal in ways we can’t predict yet."
Kai nodded. "...Exactly."
Neither of them said anything else for a while. They just started walking back toward the city together, the transport carts creaking along behind them, loaded down with everything two people had carried out of a frozen cavern by hand.
For the first time, Kai wasn’t looking at dungeons as simply places to grow stronger anymore.
He was starting to see them as something closer to mines, full of buried possibilities, any one of which might turn out to be the missing piece Mythal needed for the fight still waiting somewhere ahead of them.
The thought settled quietly in the back of his mind as the city gates came into view.
Tomorrow, they’d clear another one.
